After the video went up Yamaha sent a email confirming it is a passive boost and they said this Yamaha's responce “The output is amplified by using a small transformer to emphasize or boost the mid and low frequencies. The transformer was designed by Yamaha guitar division to control how much emphasize or boost certain frequencies by adjusting the number of coil turns”

Awesome . I played one at a mom n pop music shop. . incredible ..it was the pro model someone traded in ..I couldn't believe why would anyone get rid of it...you can just feel the quality ... until they said it was some teen... Really liked it These guitars are awesome .and I don't understand why guitar center in Sam Ash don't have these it doesn't make sense what is Yamaha missing man they need these guitars in these stores so people can see the quality feel the quality play it and buy them

Hi - I just re watched this excellent review. Thank you. If the boost is passive, would this work when plugging into a Kemper profiling amp or does it need a 'normal' amp to get the power for it to work?

I wish Yamaha was more accessible as a brand like Ibanez. Ibanez and Yamaha put some of the most thought into their design, killer guitars. Unfortunately i've not found an AZ that was built perfectly at any price, and Yamaha's MIJ stuff is hard to come by. Maybe i need to get over my MII phobia (caused by ibanez)

You don’t normally see Phil smile when playing while doing a demo. So even with the rigorous overview and checks he did on this guitar, that rare smile tells us all we need to know. Also I’ve never heard him stop to say “that’s fricken awesome” in the middle of playing. At the end he said he doesn’t like to rave but he did actually let that slip a bit. 🤣 The sheer quality and intelligent innovation that went into this guitar 🎸 is definitely worth the low price of $799.00 for admission. With a transformer turns ratio of 1:2, that will indeed double the voltage driving the amp, which is also 6 dB. However, that comes at a price. The load impedance seen by the guitar pickups decreases 4-fold. If the amplifier has a 1 Meg input impedance, that now looks like 250k which will dampen the resonance of the pickups. Further, the cable capacitance will be multiplied by 4. For example, a 10 foot cable with 300 pF of capacitance will look like 1200 pF to the pickups with the boost on. Both of these factors will darken the tone by suppressing high frequencies.
@lonerjuan
@lonerjuan 2 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't the parasitic capacitance become 75pF instead of 1200pF?
@fenderbass0
@fenderbass0 2 жыл бұрын
@@lonerjuan Impedance seen by the pickups goes down by the turns ratio squared, or factor of 4. Impedance of the capacitor is calculated as inverse in frequency and capacitance -- 1/(2pi*f*C). Therefore the equivalent capacitance is multiplied by 4.

They skimped on the electronics and hardware, but the wood on it is solid. Stripped it of everything, added custom, high quality electronics and hardware, and now it's an amazing guitar. Hopefully the new Revstar will introduce more people to Yamaha.

Bought a P90 version of this guitar in Merlot after watching this video -- took it home and played it for hours, and when I went to bed I took it and played it in bed unplugged. Then I went and got my pocket amp and played it through the pocket amp -- seriously love the sound and feel of this guitar. Fantastic build quality, the most I've done to it since owning it is lower the bridge by *maybe* a half a millimeter to get it to my preferred action, but that was it.

I played one today in a shop. It was absolutely superb. Maybe the best set-up electric guitar I've ever tried. The neck, fingerboard, fretting, intonation and playability were utter perfection. I didn't know about the 'boost' function, so never tried that. The only bit I didn't like all that much, was the position of the jack socket, which was a bit clunky when trying to adjust things, and altering one's playing position [I usually play, seated]. I always prefer front mounted sockets, like a 335, or especially, a Strat. Altogether, an exceptionally well built and great sounding and playing guitar.

I just received this guitar (March, 2023) in flash green. It's a very nice guitar. It has an excellent sound and neck feel. The second position with the focus switch engaged is a sound I've been looking for for a long time. That being said, the fretwork on mine is nowhere near as nice as the one in this video. Compared to my other stainless steel fretted guitars, these feel gritty, and several ends are sharp, especially in the lower frets. They're playable, but I think these early demo guitars had a little more hands-on time than the current run.

The transformer reminds me of the Epiphone Jack Cassidy bass, I've been wondering for a long time why nobody had put one in a guitar, but here we are :) This is the kind of innovation I like to see. More companies shouldn't be afraid to make passive guitar circuit changes. Very glad you reviewed this one Phil! I always trust KYG reviews since they are always geared towards viewers/consumers rather than reciting the same kind of bullet points the brand seems to want to push in their marketing campaign. I've seen so many positive reviews on YT of this guitar which I take with a grain of salt, but when I see KYG has a positive review, I know it's credible. Keep up the good work Phil.

I recently purchased a Yamaha solid rosewood acoustic after a TON of research and deciding they were the best bang for buck for the features I was looking for. Got one of their Japan models. Yamaha knows how to make an amazing instrument, and they do it at prices well below what others are doing for the quality. I have zero doubt that this is a fantastic guitar.

@@TheChristafershawn Haha! Same one here. Quality is astounding, and you'd have to pay double for the same features on a Taylor or Martin. I suspect the quality of the Revstar Pro will be mindblowing. You could spend all you want on whatever Gibson but you'd never get something this feature rich (they just don't make it), nor of this quality.

Yamahas tends to be a great value in everything they do. From guitars, saxes, trumpets, and synths, they are always in the conversation. I prefer shredder guitars, and will often find myself looking at Yamahas.

Last year I was researching mid price acoustics for my daughter and went with a Yamaha. Undoubtedly great bang for the buck. Sounds great, plays great, looks great. I wanted it. On top of that just bought a Yamaha YC88 keyboard. Again great bang for the buck and the build quality is excellent. That board came from Indo (I thought it might be a Japan build) like the low and mid tier Revstars. Indonesia seem to be doing some really great work on building musical instruments for several brands. And now I’m sounding like a Yamaha fan boi which may actually be true. Not intentional but they are making some really great instruments at all price points.

@@thesmellycatjazz Don't forget motorcycles and hifi stereo systems. My first proper stereo was an amazing Yamaha system, and my stepdad has a late 70s Yamaha system that's unbelievable and I'm hoping to get it. Shredder guitars huh? When I think of shredders I don't think Yamaha, but Michael Lee Firkins was a Yamaha player and he's wicked good.

You can get the same effect by switching the humbucking pickup coils from parallel to series. When you make the pickups higher impedance by switching the pickup coils in series, the inductance increases which causes the high frequencies to roll off. When that transformer is added to boost the voltage it also effectively makes the pickups higher impedance which causes the highs to be rolled off.

Just in time! Thanks Phil! My Birthday is next Monday and I'm giving myself a new guitar!! LOL At first, I was excited about the new Gibson "Ted" guitar. Looked interesting and John Bohlinger gave it a good review. But as usual, Gibson made a $1000 guitar and priced it at $5000!! So they are out, again!! I really liked the Revstar with the P90's, I don't have a guitar with P90's and I've wanted one for awhile! After your sage review on the quality, that's what I'm buying!! Thanks much!!! 8) Gary

The transformer steps up the pickup voltage but also steps down the effective input impedance of the amp that's reflected back through it to the pickups. This drops the resonant peak frequency of the pickups as well as making them louder so you get more of a low mid emphasis rather than high mid. The early Wolf Box DI did a similar thing to the sound of basses and guitars even though it stepped down the signal because the input impedance of mic preamps is generally very low compared to the amp inputs we're used to.

The AC voltage comes from the Pickup, not the Amp. Passive pickups can put out about one volt alternating current. A transformer can be used as a multiplier.

Love your videos, but have to comment on the transformer. If there's any significant voltage coming out of your amplifier input, there's a problem with your amplifier. This transformer couldn't use any dc leaking from the first stage bias even if it was present. From the picture it appears to be a simple passive audio transformer that can be switched in to ratio up the output voltage of the guitar.
