I get chills every time I listen to the Yes album. Steve Howe and Chris Squire unleashed on the world.

Steve Howe, yeah, but I'd argue that Chris had already been unleashed on the 1969 debut. The first song starts with the bass very much in your face. Eddie Offord's production gives him a better sound here is probably what you're noticing.

Yes creativity levels quadrupled, when Steve and Chris came together. Both incredibly talented composer/musicians. Saw Yes supporting Iron Butterfly in London’s Royal Albert Hall before this album broke and was captivated by the music, had to buy the album they were promo-ing (and many since). Just 14 and wow! 34:13

Short excerpt from Wikipedia on the meaning of the song: ""Yours Is No Disgrace" is "a remarkable and subtle song about the Vietnam War." The lyrics make their point by contrasting the suffering of the soldiers in Vietnam with people partying in Las Vegas". (Caesar's Palace is a large casino/hotel in Las Vegas) I found a "historical live recording" of this song (German television from the show Beat Club 1971) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKnCeHygnp54fdk Have fun

Far and away the longest-lasting and the most popular of the 1970s progressive rock groups, Yes proved one of the lingering success stories from that genre. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience to reach the end of the century as the definitive English progressive rock band. Where rivals such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Genesis and King Crimson altered their sounds so radically as to become unrecognizable to their original fans, Yes consistently retained the same sound, a mix of powerful yet delicate lead vocals, cosmic (often mystical) lyrics, virtuoso playing, and vast musical tapestries topped off with heart-stoppingly gorgeous melodies and sealed with a rock & roll kick. - All Music Guide

This was my introduction to Yes, age 14, in 1971. Their 3rd Album. Hearing ‘Yours is No Disgrace’, I’ve Seen All Good People, ‘Starship Trooper’ and the rest of the Album, I’d heard nothing like it before. Jon Anderson’s incredible unique voice just gave me goosebumps, Chris Squire’s amazing bass, Steve Howe’s scintillating guitars, lead and acoustic, (Steve had replaced Peter Banks) and Bill Bruford’s mind blowing drums. Tony Kaye was awesome on keyboards too, he was replaced by Rick Wakeman of course, after this Album. Magical Music for the start of my Yes journey. I promptly went out and bought the first two Albums. Awesome. 🎶❤️🎶

I’m not sure that a more eloquent response to what was going on at the time this album was recorded has been made. With subtlety and nuance Yes built a song around antiwar sentiments that perhaps, should have been heeded. They made incisive commentary into art. The beauty is that Yes didn’t set out to create masterfully crafted pieces of artistic integrity while hoping to reach those that listened with heart instead of ear. I believe that they created music that they could find intrinsic merit in while performing those standards on tour night after night. They challenge themselves to find their limits as musicians, as humans. Jon Anderson and Chris Squire realized a vision that was only possible in the golden age of rock music, especially with the approval of Ahmet Ertegun at Atlantic records. Those are Steve Howe’s sentiments and they certainly ring true. It was the golden age of rock music. This music couldn’t exist without Bill Bruford, Steve Howe and visionary( who almost never acknowledges it) Jon Anderson. Tony Kaye’s keyboard contributions saw him rejoining for 90125.

The bass sound. That "barking" overtone that cuts through, and kinda sounds like wood, but is so hard to describe. An old buddy called that "Gronk". Squire's tone is dipped in gronk. LOL

Great, I look forward to your enthusiasm. As a teenager, I bought my first Yes album, a triple live album Yessongs, through newspaper distribution in 1973. That's why I especially know the fantastic live versions. I only bought the remastered CDs for the next three albums from this one. It's amazing how good the 50 year old songs sound, just fantastic. Each original page contains two long songs and a short song in between. Did you see that Clap is a bonus track in a 4' studio version? There are definitely more highlights waiting for you. As an addendum, a treat: video Yours Is No Disgrace Live Beat Club 1971❤/11'-version from the German cult TV show. There are now also good 12' videos under Yessongs 1972 ❤❤ with Rick. Live, Yes are an absolute rock band (I experienced it myself). However, I don't want to miss out on the studio versions. P.S. It was thanks to you that I became interested in Time And A Word again after years; definitely a good album. But the magical musical journey is just beginning, thanks in part to Steve Howe, ideally paired with the great bassist Chris Squire.

That’s right. Utterly unique. There won’t ever be anything quite like Yes again, even as there had never been anything quite like them before. We will be considered so lucky by future musicology, for having been alive and listening as this music was created and distributed. And future musicology is correct. We have been and are so lucky.

I always loved Tony’s keys on this album. He just didn’t have that star presence and rep that Rick had (and he hated synths) ❤ Peter Banks was moved out of the band as he didn’t like the orchestra on their second album. I love the Banks/Kaye albums and think they are unfairly maligned. But without these changes we would never have gotten Close to the Edge and so on ❤❤❤

Atlantic have nobody but themselves to blame for the poor chart performance of the first two albums. Yes' brand of prog rock are present on both albums, albeit in somewhat embryonic forms. But the traits they became known for -- as seen on The Yes Album -- can also be found on those first two albums. It's just that the songs Atlantic chose as singles -- "Sweetness" and "Time and a Word" -- were hardly good examples. To be fair, Yes was never a singles band (until 90125, at least), and in some ways they were ahead of the curve in terms of mainstream audiences having an appetite for complex rock music. King Crimson helped pave the way, but it would take another year or two before other bands like Yes could capitalize on that.
