One of my favorite albums of all time. You must also listen to Roundabout and Gates of Delirium. Steve Howe was voted "Best Overall Guitarist" in Guitar Player magazine five years in a row (1977-1981) and in 1981 was the first rock guitar player inducted into the Guitar Player Hall of Fame.

"Close your eyes and listen." As most of us Yes fans well know, Yes music requires the listener to immerse themselves, within the privacy of one's own head, and with repeated listenings; therefore to allow the music to carry you on a journey within one's own soul. With Peace and Love to all! (Michael)

"Starship Trooper" is the song that grabbed the attention of Phil Carson, an A&R guy from Atlantic Records who had no idea who Yes was even though they were on his label. This immediately led to Yes getting booked onto American tours supporting Jethro Tull and Black Sabbath, and the rest is history. The song itself is an amalgam of things they'd been working on individually and collectively. The "Life Seeker" section is clearly Jon's, "Disillusion" was something Chris had come up with that featured on a song the band had been playing live called "For Everyone", and "Würm" was a Steve Howe composition that had been heard on a song called "Nether Street" recorded by his previous band Bodast. This is how Yes worked back then. A lot of the songs when Steve first joined are kind of "Franken-songs", stitched together from bits they'd been working on or had laying around. It's kind of the modus operandi of most early prog rock bands, actually.

Yes is eccentric and fearless, nobody else does stuff like that, except for the copycats. They use balance/contrast so well, like with putting the 2 halves of I've Seen together, it just works. This is Steve Howe's first album with them, and it's when they really start kicking into the next level. The whole album is brilliant. On the next album they change the keyboard player to Rick Wakeman and really go full on prog. Starship and Yours Is No Disgrace are best live cause of the energy and extended jams.

It was the addition of Steve Howe's bitingly imaginative guitar pyrotechnics that finally allowed Yes to find their true identity. The Yes Album is a gigantic leap forward, with extended workouts such as the ethereal "Starship Trooper" emphasizing the band members individual virtues. In Bill Bruford, Yes had a hip, jazzy drummer; in Chris Squire, a bassist willing to dominate the mix with his elephantine lines; and in Tony Kaye, an organist who used his Hammond sparingly, for funkier effect. - The New Rolling Stone Album and Record Guides

Now this is progressive rock. Not prog (which is a style, a thing in a box, a genre) but original work - you've no idea what you'll get next, or in 1 minute, or even if the song will end with anything from the start! It's progressed - Wonderful!

Wurm guitar creeped up like you were floating no shit. Both bands excellent. Concert over at 11:30 took us 2 hours to find our truck. Me 16, my sis. 18, our gfriend since kdg. 16. Then took 4 hours to drive back home 50 miles. Think we was driving in circles a min. Haha no cells then. Thank the lord no state trooper stopped us cause we was ripped. Hahaha! Made it home thou and one of the best concerts I saw. Lesson learned trip but don't leave the farm. Haha they just don't make chemicals like they used to darn shame..... hahaha true story

Musical compositions with several movements (sections) are often referred to as a “suite” (pronounced sweet). It dates back to the 1600s and as early as music by the composers of Ancient Greece. I went to see Yes in concert during the 70s and they played almost like classically trained musicians in a symphony orchestra although they had a tad more groove 🎼🎹🥊

Part two of the Mona Lisa of prog rock. Ps this single track, starship trooper contains 3 distinct contributions from differing band prior compositions welded together with a veritable dictionary of time signatures. The drumming on its own is pure genius. Then the bass....ahhh the bass (with absolute menace during wurm), then guitar (many styles and explosive at the end), etc etc etc.

John, the reason you had never heard "I've Seen All Good People" before is because radio as a means of mass communication is dead. It was actually a massive crowd pleaser the first time Yes played it live in early 1971. So much so that it became the song they were best known for, and they actually started to earn a reputation as a folky group in America (Steve's acoustic work helped). It was the kind of song in the early 70's that most bands wanted -- something to get audiences up and shaking their hips and clapping their hands. It was adopted by FM radio programmers even though it hadn't been planned as a single. It stayed in FM classic rock rotations for years.

This would be the last album where the Beatles are still an obvious influence - you can hear it in the vocal harmonies and the transitions. The coda of Starship Trooper is reminiscent of She's So Heavy from Abbey Road. You even get a refrain of Give Peace a Chance in I've Seen All Good People. It's a marvelous transitional album. As to what does it Mean? I've been asking myself that for over 50 years. Thanks for a great reaction John.

Würm is the last Ice Age 25,000-14,000 years ago in the Alps of Europe. Maybe it's an "intellectual pun" from Steve Howe because he "dug up" parts of his previous band Bodast's 1968 song Nether Street (video available, sounds similar to Yes). Just a guess?!? Addendum to Seen All Good People live on Yessongs❤: pt1 goes into pt2 without a break with a rocking guitar.

I watched an interview with Jon Anderson once and he said sometimes, he'll just a word for the lyrics because of the sound of the word rather than it's meaning. So, sometimes, they lyrics might seem to make no sense at all. So I wouldn't get overly hung up on the lyrics. A lot of times it seems to me he just gives you a general impression, and if you try to drill down too deep it won't make sense, because some of those words are there for the sound, not the meaning.

I wouldn't put too much thought into Jon Anderson's lyrics. For the most part they are nonsense meant to sound good with the music. What Anderson is doing is word painting or if there is meaning to them, he left it vague and allowed the listener to interpret them as they would. Personally I think Jon's lyrics are fantastic. Nothing is meant to be taken too literally. He uses his voice as an instrument and on that level they are a perfect fit for Yes music. Also, Jon is not a religious man in the slightest but he is a very spiritual man. He's more new agey in his thoughts and philosophy.
