To be fair, they had already just dough an all-out battle against Whitebeard. Fighting two Yonkou in a row with Blackbeard also present would not be an optimal situation especially when you consider the fact they already completed their goal of killing Ace, managed to also kill Whitebeard, and had the direct option of ending the fighting without any further effort. Sengoku and Garp would be more than enough to defeat Shanks, and they still had Aokiji and Kizaru to fight the rest if Shanks' crew. If the White beard and Blackbward pirates weren't there, the marines could've probably defeated Shanks' crew, but I still doubt they would've taken the risk when they didn't have to. With them there, Sengoku made the only possible choice to prevent the entire island of Marineford form being destroyed.

John Ciulla Uh dude. The Red Haired Pirates look tiny compared to the fleet of soldiers and ships the other Emperors command, and it looks like they only have one to no Devil Fruit users. Yet BIG MOM and WHITEBEARD themselves acknowledge the power of Shanks and his crew, and he's known as one of the Four Emperors. The Four Emperors are pirates who are so powerful and have so much influence in the New World, that not even the World Government would enter their territory or meddle in their affairs. The Red Haired Pirates must have God tier Haki for the World Government and the other Emperors to acknowledge them as an established pirate empire.

Vincent Rico Mercado Weevil maybe? He pretty much slapped around all the remnant commanders of the Whitebeard pirates, except Marco. Granted Marco is the strongest commander and we aren’t really sure who would win. But, I do believe even Kizaru made a comment about Weevil’s strength. Also Hawkeye can fight Shanks evenly in terms of sword fighting, however does this mean he’d be able to fight say Big Mom who doesn’t use a sword? I actually don’t know I assume he would be able to fight Big Mom, but there is the possibility he can’t. Also in the Z movie apparently one of the old Shichibukai cut off an admiral’s (Z’s) arm, so presumably whoever that was would’ve been able to fight a Yonkou.

I see Shanks as the true successor of Roger of the Yonko. He's got the not so serious personality, small but high quality crew, and godly self strength (haki) over devil fruit hacks. Heck, with the straw hat, Roger even sort of choose him as his successor. He's the embodiment of Roger Luffy must surpass before reaching one piece.

It was clearly a mistake and a plothole the can be forgiven since It's the first chapter, the thing about betting it on the new generation is a poor ret-con.

I dont think Oda came up with Haki at such an early point either, it was just a bad-ass anime stare like the ones you can find in other anime, the Seaking didn't even faint and he was weak enough to be beaten by Luffy after all so i think that Shanks using Haki on the Seaking is also part of the ret-con . You probably heard that Oda, at first, planned One Piece to last around 5 years but since it was massively popular at around the Arlong arc he began to plan the bigger picture and a lot of world building and history for the world. I dont think that Shanks was going to have a bigger role when Oda introduced him in chapter 1, he only came up with it later on when he wanted to expand the world.

Other manga call it killing intent etc. it was a retcon and Oda has come out and said that he doesn´t care much for continuity as long as his story is entertaining much like Toriyama, who wrote a shitton of plotholes into Dragon Ball because he didn´t care either.

Actually most theories say that Conqueror's Haki requires the person to actually have authority and power to develop. This theories say that marines can't, or very rarely will, develop that haki and therefore Luffy would be more submissive and not really Luffy.

That's just the Marines. I doubt shanks and whitebeard's crew could stand up to the entire forces of the WG. You gotta remember that the admirals are still fresh and so are the warlords along with Garp and the other hightier vice admirals like Tsuru. Mariejois is just near marineford while WB's crew are already powerless with WB and Ace being dead, jozu an outright a goner and Marco and Vista being futile compared to a beaten up akainu. Shanks' crew could probably hold their stand against the Marines but with CP0 and Kong coming into play would change the war entirely. Though that could probably trigger Dragon to summon his crew or Big Mom to meddle.

I hope to God that Shanks doesn't have a Devil Fruit. If anything, I am a firm believer in there being more forms of Haki than we are currently aware of. Like, if it is possible for the 3 forms of Haki *(Conqueror's, Armament, and Observation)* to have subclasses of sorts, or if it is possible to unlock new forms of Haki altogether. As an Awakening of sorts, just like the Devil Fruits. I hope that Oda intends to delve deeper into that.
