Somalia used to be a byword for war and hardship, and thousands of Somalis escaped to this country to seek safe refuge.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Now some families here are taking the radical decision to send their sons back to Somalia to get away from the dramatic rise in knife crime and gang culture here on the streets of England and Wales.
Our Africa correspondent Jamal Osman, travelled to Kismayu in southern Somalia to meet a growing number of British Somalis trying to make a fresh start.

I am British and I know how violent and aggressive some of our people are, particularly when drunk. When I had a son and he was approaching his teens (and I was beginning to be afraid for his safety), I had the opportunity to leave and come and live in Brasil. That was almost 20 years ago and we've been here ever since. Most people think Brasil is more violent and dangerous than the UK, and in some ways it is, but there is very little bullying in schools, or fighting in bars, and none of the senseless stabbings we have in the UK. Admittedly we don't live in a major city like Rio or Sao Paulo. My son has grown up healthy (in London he was always sick) and safe. These Somali boys are much better off in Somalia where they are not going to be considered second class citizens, and have to endure the prejudice and mindless hate that they would in the UK. I'm sorry and ashamed to say this but it's true, and from what I see it has only got worse there.

Abz 3000 exactly. From what I understand these stabbings are mostly gang related, and the average person is very unlikely to be a victim.
@RoninxDD
@RoninxDD 5 жыл бұрын
@Abz 3000 You fail to take into account the reasons as to why these people seek such a life. Yes, there's no doubt about the fact that these people bring the stabbing unto themselves, but as things are; it's not their fault. They're brought up in a society where it's much more difficult for them to succeed in an academic field relative to the average white man. A lot of the times people do seek such a life style is simply due to the fact that they have to, in order to be financially stable relative to the rest of Britain.

@@wm9669 its true but not true at the same time, they went through hardship to survive. Now that they feel safe they are worried about there kids surroundings while they grow up. Best decision they can make is take em back to where we come from. You can't really control what's going around you, and when your a teenage somali in the UK, you can't really avoid it as much. Some do im nit gonna lie, others just get caught in the drift. So whether it was shameful or not along as now they can have a peace in mind thats all that matters. Some of them have seen things that can get people traumatised and jump up in bed driped in cold sweat.

London isn’t the issue here, it’s the people who these Somali’s CHOOSE to hang around with. I was born and raised in London and have lived here for 23 years. Never been stabbed, never been robbed, never been in a bar/street fight, never felt unsafe and I’m perfectly healthy. It’s down to the individuals CHOICES

MetroBoomin he’s right to an extent. Was born and bred in a very ghetto area, went to a ratchet school NEVER mixed with the wrong people, never indulged in street life why? Because of my parents warning me not to and instilling important values in me growing up. It’s that simple. Now i know for other communities, particularly the Jamaicans the gang inner city life is generational therefore harder to shake off, but majority of somali boys and girls had parents who were present and supporting them, extended family to visit and mingle with, and raised in religious household environment which encourages them this lifestyle is not only dangerous but morally wrong and they do it anyway- at that point it is a CHOICE.

Tribalism shares many parallels with gang culture. When these kids grow up hearing about how "our tribe has beef with that tribe, we don't mix/marry with that tribe, our tribe is the best stick to our tribe" are you really surprised that some of them then find their own "tribe" on the streets of the urban areas where gang culture is endemic?

said abshir - London is more dangerous than kismayo, but by what measure? It is possible for a place to have more deaths, for example than another place, but have many more people and therefore fewer deaths per person. Also, a place could have a higher murder rate but more money, so the extreme difference between the best and worst lives could be enhanced. Statistics need to be interpreted.

somali darama please don’t lying to yourself, walalo. It ain’t better off than UK. I mean it isn’t even developed. I’m Somali, wallahi. I know what I am talking about. We have a very long way to go before things getting better. around 30 - 40 years, if Al Shabab will be destroyed sooner so other can returns to rebuilding the country fast and educate a lot of people so we can get rid of tribes for good and wouldn’t need elders act like they rule everything like they are the law, It is 21st century. We must not allowed criminals to think they can get away with anything even if they went back to Somalia. if they did something bad, they must be punished, if they don’t want to contribute good things to the society, then they should be rotting in jail. I feel sorry for their parents, wallahi they came all the way to UK for their family safety, and then, their kids acted like gangsters. Most of Somalis here in the uk is nothing like them, it is just few bad ones who fell into gang crimes.

Historically, Somalians have proved themselves to be fierce fighters, aggressors and great warriors. Their fearlessness & warrior culture ensured that they were NEVER ENSLAVED by the Europeans (although Europeans tried..& tried...& tried). So this warrior blood is in the veins of these young men, which means that THEY WILL ALWAYS ATTRACT/SEEK OUT GANG CULTURE & be susceptible to fighting whether they emigrated to Canada, U.K, USA , Australia etc! ..its not these Young mens fault. They are aggressors & warrior like by nature. (Maybe they should put this natural ability to good use & join the army or something? ... but unharnessed on the streets of Compton or Brixton etc.... it will only lead to no good.

Inspirational, I'm glad they had wise counsel from wise parents! Africa presents an opportunity for everybody (young or old) to achieve great things. Somalis abroad should gain as much useful skills & knowledge (particularly in IT, Science, Maths & Economics) & go back to the continent! These kids are the future of Somalia - I hope they are encouraged to use their presence there to constructively contribute, rebuild & create. I'm so happy to see our youth thrive back home rather than self destruct in a foreign country.

Tribalism shares many parallels with gang culture. When these kids grow up hearing about how "our tribe has beef with that tribe, we don't mix/marry with that tribe, our tribe is the best stick to our tribe" are you really surprised that some of them end up finding their own "tribe" on the streets of the urban areas where the gang culture is endemic? We practically pushed some of these kids into a gang-like mentality.
@andreewing05
@andreewing05 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent point. African tribalism is deadly and discriminatory when it gets started. A lot of that so called "culture" is no good. I am from America and my wife is from Ethiopia. I went to Ethiopia to marry her more than 10 years ago. Often I have to deal with a lot of closed mindedness all in the name of culture.

Makes sense. Those that were brought back/deported back to Kenya from abroad, unfortunately, (some of them) formed gangs that terrorised the streets Nairobi. At one time, their presence caused such a controversy for there were plain clothed policemen commissioned to kill them point blank in the streets. Some then escaped the police dragnet and media spotlit in Nairobi, and shifted their base to Kampala.
