All these songs from the 60's were a warning to our future. They knew we would continue to face the same challenges our country & world were facing. Sadly most people just write this off as Flower Power Music. The lyrics from all those groups were powerful. Storytelling songs, like Simon & Garfunkel folk rock was folk rock genius, and yet all these songs still apply to much of what we are STILL dealing with. The 60's was perhaps the most powerful music decade in American, British & Canadian music. For those of us that grew up with this music we knew what a great time it was to live.

Such a beautiful song and beautiful performance. From the mid-60's. The lead singer is Jesse Colin-Young. Definitely American. The song was written by Dino Valenti (under the pseudonym Chet Powers).
@barrycohen3112 жыл бұрын
I posted the YT link to the Dino Valenti version. Chet Powers was his real name, Dino being his stage name. He sold the rights to this song whilst in prison, on drug charges I believe. My memory is foggy, but I believe he sold the rights to it for only a few hundred dollars.

You're right, Harri. If people spent more time generating positive rather than negative, it might be a better world. Maybe all the 'peace, love, harmony' songs from the 60's didn't make a lot of difference at the time. But, maybe if songwriters and performers would have continued with those types of songs over the past few decades, instead of the negative cr@# that's out there today, we might have achieved more of the peace, love, and harmony we still strive for. Thank you for your reaction to this beautiful song!

"Quicksilver Messenger Service" has a song called "Fresh Air," you'll love. Add "What About Me?" by them. "Gold and Silver," too. Dino Valenti, who wrote the first two, also wrote the 60's anthem, "Get Together," sung by The Youngbloods with Jesse Colin Young on vocals. Jesse still performs. Youngbloods have a lot of great songs like "Sunlight" and "Darkness, Darkness."

I’m an optimist at heart, but also a realist. It would be a wonderful world for all if we could just live in this world loving one another. Will it ever be achieved? I doubt it. As long as there are inequalities, greed, lust for power and money… things will never change. People will step on others to get ahead and the poor and disadvantaged will be the victims. Survival of the fittest I guess and the nature of the beast. This is the way of the world, the strong over the weak and I don’t see it ever changing. But I also believe that it’s always going to be a cause worth fighting for even though the fight is futile.

It was used as a PSA for Christians and Jews Conference which prompted the second release. What can you say, an iconic song for that time and now, still for the ages.

One of my very favourites since it came out. an exquisite song, and a timeless, perfect message so many were trying to convey in their own way. It was like experiencing a great awakening and slowly watching the world drift back into darkness and slumber. I saw Jesse Colin Young in 1976 at Toronto's Varsity Stadium followed by the Band and CSNY. Lotsa smoke, between at least 10 of us, we'd returned from a beautiful weekend up north on the Sunday for the concert, incredible day and show I loved finally incorporating this one into my repertoire, mostly solo, but it's there if the opportunity arises.

The Youngbloods were a 4 piece band at the time. Jerry Corbitt left and they continued as a 3 piece. They had some minor hits afterward. Elephant Mountain contains some stunning tunes like Sunlight and Darkness Darkness written by Jesse Colin Young, a great vocalist and songwriter. Darkness became something of an anthem to the boys serving in Viet Nam. This song was written by Chet Powers aka Dino Valenti (and several other names due to several drug related convictions).
