Imagine a family dynamic where your California-based daughter is living off of green smoothies, while Indian immigrant mother is strapping her fitness watch to her youngest son to get those steps in, as she takes her fourth nap of the day. Self-care means a few different things for the Garg family. Tune into the banter as we navigate self-care in our South Asian x American home, financial stability, and the chaos of family life.

I’m hands-down Team Brij/Zarna here! Self care to me is simply making time for myself everyday, doing what I want to do even if that means just sitting around and watching Netflix at the end of the day. I’m gonna say that lately my self care has been tuning into your podcast every Monday after work!

OMG! I am a Veer supporter in this podcast. Yuka is a French app so it’s very strict with its rating. I only buy stuff above a 60 rating. And sometimes cheap stuff from Costco or Lidl will have a better rating than stuff from Whole Foods. So it’s not necessarily pricier. I wish I had that consciousness when I was as young as him. We’ve been eating/using so much stuff in America that’s so bad for us… and has complex coloring and chemicals. It’s not good for us. I support Veer 100%.

A+ to Veer. I am amazed how aware this kid is. I learned about this new app too. Thank you. I didn't even know anything when I was even 35 as such. These kids are very aware and I seem to learn a lot from these podcasts as such. My self care is "sleep" as much as possible. And also agree with Zarna to say "No" to preserve energy. Another self care is home cooked food and going for a simple , at least 10 min walk .

Otherwise, I choose a suggested alternatives. I do this for everything -- toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, soap, snacks, pickles, etc…👍🏻

I like these family episodes because in general Indian families keep everything inside do not talk even if there are struggles in the family. These episodes are breaking it. I thank Zarna for this. Regarding self care I liked Zoya she is into both mind and body care, especially addressing mind, which is very important. Younger generation suffers so much mostly comes from within than outside. Meditation and spirituality addresses this. I love your family episodes. Namaste 🙏

Dear Zarna , first a genuine👏for little Veer.. for having opened up.. Zoya has rightly pointed out that Veer and Brij kept up the joy of lively chatting .. However.. My idea of self care starts with a 'ME" time.. every day.. A little time for myself.. with good thoughts, proper breathing, basic exercises, little planning for food intake.. Self care is believing in inner strength and timely decisions taken .. Body care and food intake cannot be too much experimenting.. as money and time has to be spent judiciously .. Self care is respecting your own bodily, mental needs to live peacefully

Amazing episode guys! Really enjoyed it. When I think of self-care, what comes to mind is conservation of energy. I believe this begins with being as tuned in to how I'm feeling as often as I can throughout the day. So often I find my attention can get pulled into random things / distractions / saying yes to that bakesale at my sons school etc. etc. The key is to be vigilent to the best use of my energy. I'm not saying I dont bake cookies - but the priority I think must always be focus back into staying energetically balanced and strong.

Great topic! Self care is taking actions that help build our resilience and deal with life's stressors and setbacks in different areas. For me spending time playing guitar or singing is self care because it makes me happy and free. Creative activity is self care. So is making healthy smoothies for breakfast even when I don't feel like it 😊

Seeing this at the recommendation of my sister. Growing up, we had this type of sitting together and just gabbing with family- so I found this nostalgically sweet. This is part of self care too. But I loved how easygoing Brij is - so agree with him more. Being much older (even older than Zarna, I am assuming) I find constant use of soap, shampoo unnecessary. Toothpaste you spit out, so doesn’t matter much if it has the sugar -though it may accustom you to the taste. You have to take basic good care of body, with minimal products, exercise, sleep and food; But over time taking care of the mind is far more important. Find a hobby you are passionate about without thinking of monetary gain, learn to have peace in heart to handle difficult times of life, and as Zarna said, be a good friend - only way to gain a good friend. list making is important too - you will find how little time it takes to finish the tasks rather than keeping track of what needs to be done.

No that’s what I do because I have had it happen to me before where I found out a product I was using to help with an issue had ingredients that was making it worse. And I do research, but it’s so hard to figure it out! But I didn’t know about this app until just now and I literally want to cry because buying new products freaks me out because, with shampoo for example, I am terrified of losing my hair. I already have thin hair, I would not look good bald and it takes me HOURS to try and go through every product I need and inspect every single version of that product to make sure it’s not gonna work against me. Because I’m always having random problems with my skin and if I buy the wrong thing, it hurts me and it’s a total waste of money. I cannot believe with all of the many hours I have spent researching products, this app has NEVER come on my radar. Thank you so much I downloaded it and then IMMEDIATELY when to my bathroom and scanned everything I’ve ever owned😂

DEFINITELY Team Zarna+Brij !!! I don't know the app but I am very skeptical of it.... a lot of things that we think are "bad" for us are firstly not that scientifically correct(the dose mostly makes the poison) and secondly, it's mostly propaganda to make us keep buying more and more expensive stuff, or just something to publish on magazines about the new fads... there is no better selfcare than discipline (sleep hygiene, self-control with food and alcohol, good habits like meditating or studying...) :)

I split my A between Veer and Shalabh. Veer for being so plugged in at his age and Shalabh for being consistent on his self care journey. For me all health care starts with mental health. If you are happy you are confident, hence make conscious choices in life. All self care habits are those that we think are good for our unique lives and they make us feel better about ourselves. I paint as a form of meditation. I take guilt free afternoon naps if needed as a form of rest. I shop as a form for self care too! It’s called retail therapy for a reason! 🙈

I’m 100 percent team Zarna + Brij ✊🏼 Though I’m so happy to hear Veer’s point of view. Also, loved hearing from Shalab about his fitness inspiration - Zoya and Brij 🙌🏼👏🏼 My A grade goes to Brij.

Veer is awesome. I like that Yuka app. A friend told us about it after my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer

I agree with brij and zarna 100% optimizing everything like spoiled kids doesn't define self care ...self care can be simple

I really wish to meet you all one day .. I am living in India in Gujarat state .. Self care for me means : body , mental and soul’s health .. What a huge program and target !! isn’t it ? I do agree with plain water only for sweat .. 😉😉 All of you are really great with big common sense and being so practical !! Bye 👋

OMG Veer is such a wonderful kid, I absolutely love him. I am mom of two boys and I am trying my best to make my kids aware of all the harmful chemicals they put in the products these days.

Thank you for the app Veer, started using it. ! I am so very much you, so much resonate with you. It’s a great thing you started at an early age.Keep it up. Using the right shampoo and conditioner is very important. Shampoo can seep through your roots and cause cancer. Small details matter!God bless.
