Best-selling author Ken Honda might not be famous in America yet. But in Japan, he has helped millions of people change their relationships with money for the better. On this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, Ken Honda describes the first steps everyone needs to take to start healing their money wounds, and to transform money from something to be feared into something that brings peace and ease. He also goes into exquisite detail on the tough subject of how to find your gifts, and then how to go about making a living with them.
SHOW NOTES:
The Zen approach is to find satisfaction in what you have instead of seeking more [1:20]
Ken’s first lesson about money was to forget about money [2:20]
Ken gives a surprising definition of what wealth means [5:12]
Money doesn't buy happiness, but it really is powerful [7:04]
People are afraid of money because of “money trauma”, often from parents [8:17]
The first step to taking control of your money narrative is gratitude and appreciation [12:15]
Focus on what you can give, and it what you will attract into your life [15:27]
How do you find your gifts, and how do you polish them into something extraordinary? [21:13]
Ken asks people literally a thousand questions to help them find their gifts [24:18]
Ken describes the way that you can monetize your gifts [26:30]
Ken advocates not comparing yourself to other people as a remedy for depression [29:47]
Ken shares the story of his upbringing, where he had money but not peace [32:19]
Ken shares another story of a man who committed family suicide [36:34]
Ken describes how the pain of his father and grandfather fuel him now [39:13]
Friendship is more protective than money [41:22]
Being in a no-money situation is uncomfortable, but it doesn’t kill you [43:49]
Ken describes cultural differences between Japanese and American attitudes [45:53]
Ken talks about what he would do if he lost all his money [50:08]
QUOTES:
“If you start appreciating everything, including money, your life will be filled with money and appreciation.” [4:35]
“Wealth is an emotion. It doesn’t really matter how much you have or how much you make.” [5:50]
“Most of us are not born with only one gift. We are born with several mediocre gifts...so there are many small gifts, but you have to multiply them. And then you become the one and only!” [22:25]

Finance and Business books have been so helpful. I’m 55 and my wife 50 we are both retired with over $3 million in net worth and no debts. Currently living smart and frugal with our money. No longer putting blames on FED for our misfortunes. Saving and investing lifestyle in the stock market made it possible for us this early, even till now we earn weekly.

You have done great for yourselves. I understand the fact that tomorrow isn't promised to anyone, but investing today is a hard thing to do for me now because I have no idea of how and where to invest in. I would be happy if you could advise me based on how you went about yours, as I am ready to go the passive income path.

Man, Ken Honda has been hiding from me for years. I watched this today & I’m so grateful for this beautiful conversation. Ken literally said some of the same things I was sharing with my niece two days ago…in my Kia. 😂😂😂 Wow. The universe has been so loud and proud with the synchronizations to relay the message that I’m on the right path. Serendipity via synchronization hit different. 🔥 3 years from now I’ll remember this moment and chuckle to myself because I’m 100% manifesting my biggest dreams; thus far. I love you all. See y’all at the peak of joy. ❤️

Some economists have projected that both the U.S. and parts of Europe could slip into a recession for a portion of 2023. A global recession, defined as a contraction in annual global per capita income, is more rare because China and emerging markets often grow faster than more developed economies. Essentially the world economy is considered to be in recession if economic growth falls behind population growth.

Found this video as I am practically putting my “mediocre gifts” together. I identified what was happening the last couple days. Love the perfect reflection. Having done all the things mentioned already and turned my life attitude around to appreciation and love and lack of fear about previous traumas and I’ve done the ancestral clearings too. I do feel so excited about all the probabilities and possibilities in my future. I’m 51 and now have no home of my own, no car, no 9-5 job, no hubby, but I now know I have these gifts:- “mediocre” healer, teacher, creator , dancer, singer, writer, artist, photographer... and a passion to help others not “hide” away from life. I’ve got the best friends who are supporting me greatly as I transit these days. And I feel the best I’ve yet felt in life as I script my own path . I’ve learnt to trust when I need the pennies or provisions, they come if I just allow it in. Building from scratch but now using my inner resources and gifts to do it right. “I love that man, I love this behaviour confirming find xx 🥰🙏🏻”

21:03 I grew up with a monk mentality. I had no connection, no want or need for money and material things. I didn't live in the past, nor did I live in the future. With this mentality. I was always in the service of others without expectations. I did not seek something in return. So, when I look at my work. It was really very impressive. I not once bragged about my achievements. Whatever business I worked at, I broke sales records and showed the company better ways. The one thing I failed to do. Want money to match on the level of my performance. What I also know. There is no company going to pay you for your level of performance. So, I tell people learn a skill, start at he bottom, work your way up, read every material about the company. In one year you can do this. Over two decades, I held over 40 jobs. I excelled where I was free to do so. Within months I knew everything about how to operate the business, to the point even better than the owner.

His idea of giving a gift worked once for me (the only time I did it and I did feel a bit awkward about it): on my first day at a job, I brought brownies. it was at a car dealership and those tend to employ lots of single men and men love home-cooked food. I had a LOT of fans at that job *instantly*. I felt it was a bit insincere and therefore fake of me to do that and yet it worked.

He doesn't mean his pleasure don't cost much, he means the man who doesn't require so much to be happy, someone like me. becoming a stoic was the best thing I ever did. I wear only the same 4 to 6 outifts through an entire season. I eat simple food, I spend money only on what I need and my life purpose, and great experiences with loved ones. I am now able to afford to a staff for my books, and all the classes I want to take this year. I keep telling people that over all, I have a great life, and they think I am crazy cause I don't have a mansion, or millions in cash, fleets of cars...etc. People who think they are poor, are people who do not see any real value in what they have already.

that is me, I am so rich and happy being a stoic:0). I keep money to invest in my life purpose, cause my pleasures is cheap because I don't focus on quantity, I focus on quality. I have basically 5 to 6 outfits I wear for fall and winter, but each sweater is super nice, and each pair of pants. I once had two dressers full of cloths, now I have one bag of cloths for two seasons.

I grew up in a dysfunctional marriage in which my dad was an enterpreneur and very bad handling money and my mom was the housewife dependant on my dads money but who could stretch money and handle it very well. Due to his business, we sometimes struggled and sometimes thrived but both my parents gave us the gift of a good education despite being it even above their possibilities. My parents lost their home to the bank during the last financial crisis and we had to move to my grandmas home. I promised myself i wouldnt care about money, i would work hard and help others but i didnt respect money. I reslised, money easily came to me but i overspent it because i had no respect for it. When i was in my mid thirties i started respecting money because i looked back at how hard i had worked and money was all gone. I have a six figure salary, imlive in the city of my dreams , Shanghai, and i managed to get a 30% promotion during this epidemic. I feel life has protected me and given me money despite the fact that i didnt focus on it, i just focused on becoming obessive to learn more skills and truly wanting to help others. Money didnt bring me joy per se, but by respecting it and appreciating it more now i am in the position to manage it better and i can give much more to the people i love.

34:15 Tom you sparked something inside me. Just now, this is fresh. I didn't look at that way. When I recall the first 40 years of my life. I can see many more experiences that should have brought me down, depressed me. So, what prevented me from becoming depressed? Everything I did I got something out of it. Everything, at home, at play, buying groceries, shopping, at work, whatever I did I got fulfillment out of it. That outweighed an employer treating me badly, that outweighed the arguments my wife and I had. Another thing, when you turn on the tv, rent a movie, watch the news, read a newspaper, engage in negative conversations. You are loading your brain up with material that going to affect you negatively. So, I never watched tv, no music, no reading books-except work related material, no ill mannered conversations about someone. I was at peace. I did not live in the past. I can tell you stories about how badly was treated, taken advantage of. Millions of dollars flowed through my hands in to another's bank account.

When the student is ready, the teacher appears. I was just talking to a coworker about how my ancestors were programmed to be pessimistic and believe in limits. And how people like Trump, was raised to be optimistic and believe in their ability to achieve anything. And how if he can do it, anybody can. We don't have to be perfect to use the laws of this universe.

Thank you so much, Ken! I was always struggling with finding my 'passion', looking at people who sing or create art or others, who have a tengible passion. But the things I'm good at weren't like that, so I didn't know what to do and thought I first need to find my gift. But then I remembered that friends would tell me what they think i'm good at, and I started to listen, instead of ignoring those clues, because I'm busy looking for a artsy passion or waiting for it to fall into my lap ✨
