I doubt anyone has the patience to read this, but if you are one of those who's in the pursuit of truth (not saying this is necessarily the truth), here's the other side of the argument, some context as to why she was under fire on China's social media, translated from a top comment on bilibili: TL:DR: Zhuyi took the place of more qualified iceskaters in the winter olympics so that she could attend an ivy when she come back to the US, Chinese fans weren't mad because she was US-born (they love Gu Ailin who was also a foreigner), nor were they mad as if she was normally a high-performing skater but messed up this one time, but rather skepticism around her abilities in general and unfairly taking the spot from much more competent skaters by suspected score manipulation in olympic qualifiers, as well as her social media pr team's publicity tactics. Winter Olympic woman solo's spot was obtained by Chen Hongyi from a certain competition. [tl's note: idk the official name in english, but I'm assuming Chen Hongyi's the player that allegedly had her spot stolen] Zhuyi's score was not even enough to qualify to participate in the previously said competition. Chen Hongyi pretty much solo-carried the solo woman's division in the window of time since a couple of years ago when there weren't many qualifying skaters in China, and even though Chen Hongyi's ability is not the best but it's obviously better and more consistant than Zhuyi's. However in the olympic qualifiers, Zhuyi won, alledgedly by a high score of 190 in the third round. But fans were furious because within the ones that participated, including Chen Hongyi, Lin Shan and Zhu Yizhong, Zhuyi was indeed the worst one. In the face of skepticism, the figure skating association stayed silent for several days, and would not publicize the video recording of qualifiers. The most they did was putting out a post claiming that Zhuyi's performance was "efficient and consistent", Lin shan's performance wasn't consistent enough, and there's issues with Chen Hongyi's landing [tl note: technical term 落刀]. Whilst all this was happening, Zhuyi's team was promoting the title "queen of iceskating" on social media platforms such as Tiktok, and claims that she is as much of a genius player as Gu Ailing [tl note: popular snowboarder who is foreign but switched to Chinese nationality, dunno her english name], also selling the fact thay Zhuyi came first place in some US figure skating competition [tl note: also dunno english name of competition], but it turned out the competition she won first place in was actually in the child division, at the time Zhuyi was 16 years old versus a bunch of 10-something year olds, in contrast the male solo figure skater Chen Wei won this competition when he was only 10. [tl note: i wonder if Chen Wei is chinese name for Nathan Chen]. Even Chen Hongyi could not complete a 高级三三 [tl note: idk wtf that is, presumably some difficult technique], but a video of Zhuyi succeeding in 高级三三 was posted before the competition, Which successfully brainwashed some people and simultaneously turned fans' normal skepticism into "cyberbullying against Zhuyi", amd that was used to bring down Chen Hongyi. The result of that is plain as day, Zhuyi's total score was 47, a technical score even lower than k宝 [tl note: dunno who k宝 is, presumably another skater], kept falling and colliding with the wall in executing the so called "高级三三", and the last jump was a empty-jump [tl note: 跳空, dunno the english technical term]foul which did not count for any points (a jump-fall [tl note: 跳空, dunno english term]will get points, but to prevent falling she did an empty-jump), in the whole routine she was only able to complete a double axle, the spin and footwork was a mess, and couldn't even hold her ending pose. The result was 22 technical point and a total of 47, a whole two digit difference from the second to last place, k宝 who was first place had almost double the amount of points Zhuyi had (if it weren't for the fact that quads aren't allowed, i can't imagine the point difference then ). If Zhuyi participated in the olympics, it'd let her come back to the US and attend an ivy-league, crushing Chen Hongyi's decade long olympic dream in the process by stealing her spot. It's a shame for Lin Shan as well, because looking at her performance from last year, she was the best out of the three, but due to her injury her condition wasn't the best. Ps: Zhuyi's freeskating was 91 points, still lower than K宝's 105 technical pts, and has a 40 point difference with the second to last place. Adding that to her score of 47 to her short program her total is 138, which begs the question: how the hell did she get a score of 190 in the qualifiers?

She doesn’t deserve the hate but if it’s true she didn’t actually earn her place and her father put her on the team due to his position then it’s unpreventable that people will criticise. If she’s not up to Olympic level then people will Ofc have an issue especially since it did influence the team event a lot. Falling not once but twice when you consider she wasn’t completing extremely hard or out of the norm jumps people are definitely gonna be at her throat when the level of Olympic skating is set extremely high to the point each official event is an attempt to break a world record. She doesn’t deserve the hate because she’s not at fault and she’s extremely young but looking at the situation nothing is going good around her people won’t just sit still unfortunately. Going to the Olympics you have the responsibility of representing your country and especially for a home games it’s really not hard to see why Chinese people are so unhappy with her performance. She is not a bad skater and she has a long way to go but it’s clear she’s not near Olympic level yet.

Quote: There are two reasons ZHU YI got criticized: 1) She took up someone else's spot. The other girl has better skills and has prepared for this Olympics for years but has not got selected. It is said that Zhu YI got this spot in an unfair way, and the government gave her the spot as a condition to welcome her scientist father back to China. She needs this experience to enhance her background to enter a top US university. The opportunity to participate in the Olympics is quite valuable for athletics. 2) It is claimed that she gave up the American citizenship. While the truth may be the opposite. She joined the Chinese citizenship but meanwhile did not apply to renounce the US citizenship. Technically speaking, this is against Chinese laws, which do not permit Chinese citizens to have a second citizenship. But nowadays, many famous people got Chinese citizenship without giving up other citizenships, Like Eileen Gu. It is OK they didn’t give up other citizenships. However, the public media keep advertising their renunciation of US citizenship to show how much they love China, while most people did not give up. And they keep silent and ambiguous on this as they want to get more fame and endorsement. If most Chinese people know that they are American-Chinese rather than pure Chinese, they will lose their commercial value and cannot get the huge profits from business endorsement. It is a lie to most Chinese common people. Her failure in the winter Olympics is not the main reason she got criticized. The criticizing appeared before her failure. But her failure makes people think that things may be better if the other girl got selected.

It’s very common for athletes to compete for other countries. You didn’t her about it before but it’s been going on for many Olympics. They shouldn’t be singled out simply because it’s taking place in Beijing. This will be more common in the future so any negativity should just be reduced. I think the real reason why there were blacklashes is because people thought Zhu Yi got selected because of her father, a leading AI research scientist who left the U.S. and returned to China to work on AI technology. People assumed that Zhu Yi did not qualify for the olympics because of her talent (people liked the performance of another native Chinese born figure skater more), but because of her father's connection (kinda similar to how Ivanka Trump was meeting with world leaders despite lacking experience in foreign diplomacy and people are mad about it due to nepotism)

Yeah but the whole thing is kind of moot because even this video is so ridiculous suggesting she could win? There’s literally nobody in China who could win. You could put their best male skater in the women’s competition and even he couldn’t win. This is a fact. In the sense they don’t have any female skaters right now who can’t even end up in the top 10. Zhu Yi or not. (This is true for most countries; US will be fortunate to end up in top 10 too) Secondly, AI researchers aren’t *that* important. I mean I am one. Maybe her dad is better than me but let me put it this way. There are more top caliber AI researchers than there are Olympic level athletes. The recruitment went the other way.

I’ve been appalled at the ruthless hatred being thrown at a teenager who still needs to be mentally prepared for next week. The comments about her have ranged from shockingly racist to downright psychotic. If people think her dad used his influence to get her a spot, they should vent their rage at the Chinese selection committee for their corruption. She had no control over the selection and was vying for a spot like everyone else. People also seem enraged that she changed her citizenship to compete for China, even though people have been playing for countries they weren’t born in for decades. A ton of athletes in Beijing right now did the same thing as Zhu Yi but aren’t getting hate for it. Getting to compete in the Olympics is a million-to-one shot that requires non-stop training and resources, and if you get offered the resources and support from a different country to follow your passion then I don’t know who wouldn’t take the opportunity. The US and other countries recruit ball players from all over the world and people don’t lose their minds over it (well except for racists, who have their own issues). People need to chill out and show some compassion.

@@someperson8151 Do you think this scenario you’re describing is what happened in Zhu Yi’s case? That she didn’t compete for a spot, but China, a country desperate for as many Olympic medals as possible, decided to embarrass itself and throw away a chance at medals in the most high profile sport, as a favor to her father? There’s no evidence that her father has any influence over the Olympic selection committee, but if you’re that naive to think China would knowingly sabotage its chance at gold because they just really like her father, then I guess have fun with that conspiracy theory. And to answer your question- yes, if you were able to convince a country to let your self-proclaimed “fat ass” enter figure skating, I’d like to see that.

On reading comments available online, it appears that it was her father who used his position to put her in the competition. I see this as a good eye-opener for all, except that the poor girl is mercilessly being punished for the actions totally beyond her control. I hope people could kindly take a step back and view this case more empathetically . There’s an innocent young teenager’s life and future at stake here. It’s just too diabolical to continue crucifying her. 1. She must be under immense pressure if given the fact that her father put her there in the competition. That stress could be the main reason why she couldn’t perform to her best. 2. The fact that she got up after the fall and continued till the end showed her courage and her great sense of responsibilities. ( reflects also her obedience to her parents) 3. On a broader scale, this may also proved the reason why the President of China is continuously putting his foot down on the practice of favoritism and corruption. China is still not up to his visionary standards yet. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly leads to further progression towards the “Chinese dream”. Pray the innocent teenager will recover fully from this unfortunate debacle in her young life. 🙏🙏🙏

There are two reasons ZHU YI got criticized: 1) She took up someone else's spot.

Very quick update: Yi Zhu did wonderfully in a recent skating club league competition in China, which is a very important game as it also serves as the qualification for a later nationals. Cong to Yi Zhu! The fact is that, during the Beijing Olympics last year, there was some controversy over the selection of the national team where Yi fortunately got in but another skater, Hongyi Chen didn't. However, what is to clarify here is that along with the controversy, there were also a lot of people backing Yi. They expressed their support to her on social media. It is just normal the selection of a national team could arouse some different voices. This happens almost everywhere. No need to exaggerate her background of switching to Chinese citizenship. Now, as Yi delivered the superb performance, many people are very happy for her including those who criticized on her chosen to the national team before. This is also what a competitive sport can tell - eventually the performance of an athlete decides.

So how would Chinese people feel if one of their own, who barely spoke English and was born and raised in China, changed her name and gave up her citizenship to compete for the U.S.?
@yangz1036

As far as I know, many Chinese athletes changed their citizenship and complete for other countries in table tennis field. Also I know that Lang Xian Ping, one of the best Chinese volleyball player and coach had coached US team to beat Chinese team. It’s totally normal. If that’s what you want to know..

The thing is she's Chinese, recently. It's one thing to be a Chinese living in US for years and another thing to have an immigrant parent or be an immigrant yourself you compete for whoever you want. Naomi Osaka barely speaks Japanese and competes for Japan but the press don't bat an eye. Literally barely speaks Japanese.

Similar comments to yours have been posted hundreds of times in the 2-3 videos I saw about her. However, she was elite when she lived in Los Angeles and elite while living in Beijing. While in LA, her dad Dr Zhu Song Chun was the director of the center for vision, cognition, learning and autonomy, an AI research institute at UCLA. I heard he also started a few AI startups. In Beijing, he's leading the institute of artificial intelligence in a project that hopes to make china the leader in AI. So as much as people hope the worse for her, there will be no factory job in her future. She will probably attend the top college in China or the US and there will be a good job for her when she graduate.

@@truinternatialdepressure3796 for every innovator or athlete who left to return to China, there are some who stayed and remain loyal to US. Founder of Zoom, Eric Yuan, is one I can think of who started his company in US and tried many times and was eventually successful to be an American. Nathan Chan is an athlete who won gold for US in men figure skating when he probably got an offer from China years ago. If only they know that typical Americans don't think anyone of their ethnicity is smart enough or athletic enough........

She gets the privilege to choose her citizenship because one of her parents is a natural-born Chinese. US-born citizens whose parents were once a natural-born citizen of another country have the privilege to apply for dual or full citizenship. Whichever she chooses, its a Win-Win, bec both countries are a powerhouse. Her decision is most likely caused by her much stronger maternal(parental) influence.

I don't think Eileen Gu gave up her US citizenship. Nothing has been confirmed. Actually US allows dual citizenship, only China doesn't. She technically doesn't need to renounce her US citizenship if China bends and allows her to have dual. In any case, she's transcending cultures and uniting people through her sport, that's what's most important.
