Couldn't agree more. The Olympics is such a strange affair. On the one hand it is the greatest display of globalism, on the other, the greatest display of nationalism. It's like the twin headed monster. Many of these athletes are now professional athletes who compete for prize money and sponsorship, it's become their bread and butter, so they are basically competing for themselves anyway. This whole national pride thing is becoming meaningless and just injects far too much politics into sports. It's annoying. We should just celebrate sports for sports. Admire *all* athletes who are best at what they do, regardless of where they're from.

This is why I think Eileen (or her mom) made a mistake with this decision. Instead of being America's darling and also loved in China because of her heritage and language fluency, she's now scorned in the US and treated with suspicion in China. If she switches back to represent the US in the next Olympics she might win back some support here but she will draw backlash in China. If she continues to represent China she might find herself increasingly unwelcome in the US. This decision put her in a no-win situation. People do stupid things at 15, my blame lies squarely with her mom for not helping her think things through. In fact, it might even be her decision rather than Eileen's.

I think it is important to note that Eileen Gu announced this decision 3 years ago at age 15. A lot could've happened in the intervening years, she could've gotten injured, lost interest etc. She probably didn't even know she'd become so dominant 3 years later, including growing 3" taller at age 16/17 which enabled her to do harder tricks. It wouldn't surprise me if she/her mom made this decision thinking it'd be the easier route for her to get to the Olympics, since each country can only send 3 skiers and the US already had several stars including Maggie Voisin while China had no one.

Eileen did it for the money, she knew she would get way more endorsement $$$ from Chinese companies and even the government. Why the other woman switched when she isn't even fluent in Mandarin boggles my mind.
