Hi, Thanks for featuring and preserving another Lustron Home. I own and live in serial #1237. I purchased it as my retirement home and actually it is the most comfortable and convenient home that I have owned. The blue and yellow painted cabinet in one of your bedrooms was actually originally in the bathroom. I am so happy that you have found another Lustron to supply many of the missing parts that you need. Lustron sent a crew from the factory along with the specially designed truck to erect the houses, after the slab was poured according to the plans supplied to the buyer. One of the reasons that the kitchens are usually heavily modified is because the dishwasher/ clothes washer combination was an absolute disaster and broke the dishes. So, it was the first thing to go along with the counter and cabinets. All best wishes with both projects.

I'm curious to know what sound is like in these homes. Caleb talked about them being loud in terms of doors opening and closing. Naively, though, I'd expect all sounds to travel pretty freely through the home. If so, then I'd think privacy would be hard to come by.

It was amazing watching Daddy crank that monster up after we packed and moved everything to one side of it. Then he would hire a big rig, they would hook it up and down the road we’d go. we have a couple of small neighborhoods of lustrons here, including one home that was in mint condition and occupied by the original owner until a few years ago. She had a lustron one car garage, and had the original built in tv in the livingroom. There was a volunteer effort a few years ago to track down all of them and include them in the registry. We have lost a couple that i am aware of, but the bigger threat is insensitive remodeling, replacing windows, vinyl siding, etc. Given the popularity of mid century modern, it amazes me that the homes in original condition aren't in greater demand, and make people think twice before making inappropriate changes. A huge issue, though, is figuring out how to insulate them. If your dad comes up with a good strategy for that, make sure his solution receives significant publicity. it will help preserve the remaining houses.

I grew up in one of these houses in the 1970’s. It was a wonderful home with a very open floor plan for the time. Many think they were cold quite the contrary once the panels got warm the whole of the inside acted a bit like a giant radiator. The big downside was that if you walked in sock feet and got within an inch and a half of the wall you could get zapped with static electricity but that was fun as a kid. That house is still there being lived in by one of my friends younger brother and family. The house next door is a lustron almost totally original and in quite good shape. Do not give up that sweet hope! In the early 90’s we started our family in a 2 BR 60’s mobile home which was sweet but small. I did not earn much $, but we prayed for a house. I had just gotten a small Christmas bonus and thought I should pay off a credit card, but “down payment” came to my mind. The next day or so I was driving to church and felt a sudden urging to turn on a residential street, and there was a 4-2 house for sale. We closed on it a month later. A real miracle. Our mortgage payment was $600 more than lot rent. There were some very lean times but we made it. It is almost paid off. I pray for a similar miracle for you both and future kids too!

In cleaning the hutch between the kitchen and dining room, rat poop dropped out of somewhere everywhere and every time I touched it. In addition, prior owner had pit bulls and the males lifted their leg on it so it was pretty rusted out along the base about 2 feet up...gross. I did not have the time to source a replacement hutch so we put in a modern kitchen. I love that your dad is going to restore his Lustron and has the time to do it right!

What a gem! Can't wait to see how this journey will unwrap! So excited to see what's in store for all of us in this beauty. Sending all the best wishes and my words of admiration to your father!

I grew up in a Lustron in Davenport Iowa. 1622 Broadlawn. I have lots of pictures of the construction. I was about 1-2 years old. Your channel makes me miss my dad so much.

I was a child in the 50s but, I never heard of these houses. Aspects of it bring back some memories though. Cool!

Very cool! Has your dad thought of doing a channel like yours, where we could follow along on progress? I'm sure he's going to want to move along quickly, but it still would be cool to see the progress.

My parents first home in Massachusetts was a steel framed house delivered in panels. Very similar floor plan with that big utility room. All the walls were paneled. $9,999.00 in 1954.

Very cool!! They're printing houses now with concrete as the base material....but metal seem like it would be equally efficient, maybe more so? Bet this house will look very inviting once finished.

Those are junk They should just use blocks instead of suckering people with the gimmick
@Mitch-Hendren9 ай бұрын
They were from a time when concrete was very expensive but there was a glut of steel left over from ww2. They were of an era

I drive by two of these beauties when visiting my boyfriend. I never knew much about them aside from being the inspiration for the prewar homes in Fallout 4. Makes me kind of want one for that and for the kitschy mid century modern vibe. But only if they can be put on a foundation with a basement; sure it wouldn't be original, but when living in a part of Tornado Alley where the soil content allows for basements to be a thing, it's a must-have for me.

several of the originals had basenents.

The TV won't really need modification to do that (though it will need attention to the capacitors). You just need an RF modulator and an antenna matching transformer. This will let you bring composite video to RF, to the two wire connectors the old TV antennas used. I'm even seeing you can get some HDMI to RF converters as well -- getting modern devices to not output 16x9 content might be the only hurdle. Getting more than two channels could be tricky -- you'll need a converter and playback device set per channel. You'll need some higher end gear to get more channels on the RF band other than channel 3 & 4.

Super interesting and will definitely look cool once restored to its prime. The retro-future, 50's but metal gives major Fallout, (the game series,) bunker home vibes.
@The2ndEmpireStrikesBack2 жыл бұрын
For good reason. These houses were used in fallout 4 in the sanctuary hills neighborhood. The ones in the game are almost copies of their real life counterparts.

Thank you so much for this video! I had no idea they had, pre-fab, metal homes like this from the 1950's ! Charming!!❤

Some pre-fab gasoline service stations were built the same way in the 1950s. They could be quickly erected.

There was a yellow Lustron house in central Iowa where I used to live….I always was amazed by the large yellow tiles on the outside for siding…I never was inside, but found it very interesting and unusual. Good luck for your dad, and keep us updating on how it comes along.

@@SarahGreen523 ……the house is on the corner of Center St. and Edgeland St. in Marshalltown Iowa. Center st. Is the main 4 lane coming into Marshalltown from the south. At least it was there 6 years ago when I lived there….it is about the second house just off Center St. on Edgeland.

What a great little home, can't wait to see the end result of this home, it reminds prefab that we had here in the uk, some of which are still standing today, I myself had the great pleasure of living in one with my grandparents🙂 You also mention the kitchen, again reminds me of a company called English Rose that produced metal kitchens, ygay if I'm not mistaken, were made from ww2 airplanes . I wish your farther just like yourselves the best of luck 🙂

I'm in the US, so different company - mine was Kitchen Aid - but I owned a home built in the late 40s and it had a metal kitchen. All metal cabinets and a large combination unit of sink with disposal and dishwasher with the long stainless steel drain board across the top. Both the disposal and dishwasher bit the dust and needed to be replaced in the late 80s, so they lasted 40 years! And they both worked great (although a bit noisy!) until the day each suddenly just quit. The disposal was easily replaced since it was part of the unit but functioned as part of the plumbing , but the dishwasher, having been built into the unit itself, not so much. My installation guy cursed it and hated me the entire time! He had to cut the old one out with a reciprocating saw (I think? Some kind of electric saw...) and he wasn't a happy camper! 😂

Love that house. I was born in the late 50s so it all looks familiar to me.
