Unpacking the latest batch of Toyota ball joint spacers and talking about how they work.
My company used to resell these parts designed and mfg. by San Diego Of Road Innovations (SDORI). We later acquired the product line from SDORI and now have the parts manufactured for us by US shops. So these parts are designed and built in the US.
This has been quite a successful product line for us. These ball joint spacers provide a useful amount of suspension lift to allow the 4WD trucks to fit 31" - 33" tall tires. They are far less cost and time to install compared to a full 4" "bracket" lift kit which was the common recipe for 33" tires back in the day.
These parts fit with our motto of "Lift as much as you need but as little as possible". Along those lines, we encourage customers to not crank in that maximum possible lift with spacers and torsion bar adjustment combined. Rather, go with as little lift as is possible and then take measures like trimming inner fenders to clear tires, using a narrower wheel and tire to limit chances of tire rubbing. We offer a front differential (and sway bar) drop kit for the 4WD trucks to help lower operating angles on CV joints. We offer upgraded idler arms with bronze bushings to beef up the steering subsystem.
It's important to carefully check for component binding at the extremes of suspension travel. Make sure the CV joints aren't binding at full droop and full steering lock. Make sure ball joints are not binding at full droop. Make sure the shock absorber isn't limiting up or down travel. If any of these issues are noted, we have information on the web page regarding shimming bump stops to limit travel and shimming the shock absorber to minimize travel limits.

There are other sources of these parts listed on the web page below: www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/BallJointSpacer.shtml#On-lineOrdering We do still have the 2WD control arm braces and replacement hardware in stock. Any lift on the IFS suspension will affect camber and toe in adjustment, so you'll generally need an alignment after installing the spacers. You may run into an adjustment limit on the alignment cams, that can vary vehicle to vehicle: www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/BallJointSpacer.shtml#FAQ16 This may limit the maximum lift height you can achieve. This again is true of either cranking up the torsion bars or installing spacers. The advantage of the spacers is you can keep the torsion bars with less preload and also maintain the full range of up/down travel before the bump stops make contact, which can happen with torsion bar-only lift.

What does the 2wd control arm brace do? I'm confused since it mounts on top of the control arm
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler Жыл бұрын
The brace reinforces the somewhat weak point where the upper ball joint bolts to the end of the upper control arm: www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/BallJointSpacer.shtml#2wdUCABrc You can see that in this photo: www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/Docs/Images/2WDspacer2.jpg We've found that when folks start taking 2WD pickups off road, that cantilevered ball joint hanging off the end of the control arm can cause the sheet metal, that the control arm is made out of, to bend and crack. The brace goes on top and sandwiches the control arm metal between the brace and the ball joint. The brace is made of 1/4" (~6mm) thick steel.

It's my understanding that tightening the torsion bar (lifting) will add positive camber. I intended to go a little bit higher to better fit my wheels. Having never touched my torsion bars, I just installed a set of these ball joint spacers on my 2WD and they added a very significant amount of positive camber and ~half an inch change in ride height. My tires are a little bit wider than stock and they now rub a bit. Am I going to have any issues when I try and get the truck aligned afterwards?

Yes, still available on our web site, link in the video description and end screen. Typically, 1.5" is the tallest spacer that'll work with most vehicles. Above that and many run into issues: www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/BallJointSpacer.shtml#FAQ2 Something will limit the ultimate lift height, be it the CV axles (we offer a front differential drop to help with that), or you'll run out of adjustment on the alignment cams or you'll run out of down travel on the suspension.

Hey there i was wondering if there 5inch spacers for toyota 4runner??? Or will i have to lift it with a complete lift kit??
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 4 жыл бұрын
No way to even fit a spacer that tall in there. With the geometry of the front suspension, you have a fixed amount of up-down travel and the control arms only can accommodate so much lift before you can't get the front end to align. With a 5" spacer, the upper control arm would be horizontal and the lower arm down at such an extreme angle that the tires would be tipped out at the top and in at the bottom (positive camber). The only way around that is with one of the bolt-on lift kits with the dropped sub-frame. You space down all the stock components 4" - 6" below the frame and that gives you the lift while retaining the stock geometry. So for 5" lift, you could install a 4" drop bracket kit and then the ball joint spacers for that extra inch.

Then, if you, for example, were able to get another 3/4" out of the torsion bars, order up the 3/4" spacers with the longer bolts and add that to the original spacers and then relax the torsion bars.

Best to check the information below as the T100s can have either 2WD or 4WD style ball joints: www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/BallJointSpacer.shtml#2WDor4WD

Will this fit on a 1980 toyota pickup 2wd RN42
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 4 жыл бұрын
No, only for the '84 and later 2WD pickups. The earlier models had different style control arms and ball joints: www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/BallJointSpacer.shtml

@@The4Crawler Ok, thanks for the quick reply. Do you know of any options for lifting a 1980 toyota pickup 2wd RN42?
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 4 жыл бұрын
@@azollo I think cranking up the front torsion bars would be the first thing to try. For the rear, add-a-leaf spring,, longer spring shackles or a set of lift springs would work.

On a 2wd

@The4Crawler 4 жыл бұрын
Yes: www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/Docs/BallJointSpacer_HowTo.shtml#GetAnAlignment You may run into a maximum lift height where you max out the alignment adjustment, either eccentric bolts on the 4WD or shims on the 2WD. That would be your maximum lift height which will vary on any given vehicle.

I have added the 1.5 spacers on my 2wd and cranked my torsions keys and now a have some bad negative camber. Can I solve this by removing some shims?
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 4 жыл бұрын
@@moejr14 You might be able to change the shims out, either more or less depending on which way you need to move the control arm. If you max that the adjustment range, then lower the torsion bars down until you can get the alignment into a reasonable range.

Lots of spacers taking up not so much space...an empty shelf by years end would look better...slap on a bow, let some relative buy the big Christmas tires...suddenly you're Santa's workshop...big boy toys

For sure would look good for the pocket book. Have to make a big investment of capital to have the machine shop purchase the material and do all the machining. And there's another big investment in the high strength mounting hardware for these parts. Then it's sit back and hope the orders to come in and that the right mix of parts were ordered.

Assuming your rear springs are under the axle, longer spring shackles or add-a-leaf spring or a lift spring would be good options, discussed in details on the web page below: www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/Shackles.shtml#FAQ14
