Removing the 2.5in Lift from the 1992 Toyota Pickup, Going Back to Stock Wheels & Ride Height

After two years driving with this setup, it was time to make this truck what I really wanted it to be - a dependable, easy to drive truck I can road trip with.
The big wheels and tires looked cool, but aren't really compatible with the engine in this truck, and my driving habits, and that is ok!

FYI For those having the same issues but want to keep the lift, you just need to regear the diffs to match the difference in tire size. Solves all those issues, speedo and all.

Yep, I have stock 4.56 gears on my 92 pick-up and am about to run 33's which are still ok with 4.56 but have already purchased a set of 4.88's. And at that point you're kind of committed to never going back to stock tire size. Really comes down to whether you want a highway truck or trail truck. I chose trail!

Missed the comment, but this is very true! For my needs, the quicker (and cheaper) route was to go back to stock, but it's absolutely possible to build a 4 cylinder wheeler with bigger wheels and tires. I didn't want to change the 4.10 gears in my truck, but for what it's worth the lift & tires went to another Toyota truck euthenist and got used.

Going with smaller tires on my 84 Nissan pickup made it more fun and fuel efficient (2wd). Going back to stock stuff should ensure you will never need to buy another truck in your lifetime. If you want one, I highly recommend a 1st gen Honda Ridgeline. My 07 is totally badass and stock. The pins in the parking brake cables are called clevis pins. Your truck should love this. Those were some of the best vehicles ever built.

What you did made a lot of sense for the 22RE. I actually saw a guy recently (florida man..literally) who put 35's on an old yota like this with a 22RE. I told him I "truly felt sorry for his engine". Suffice to say he didn't get it... but he will soon enough. That said, I have a '92 Ex-Cab 4x4 5-spd manual with the 3.Slo. Advancing the timing a little actually helps it a lot but it's still a weak v6 unfortunately.. and same issue with any hill, it just dogs out. Regardless, I'm about to do a 1.5" body lift, 1.5 BJ spacers, Ford F150 leafs, and mount 33 x 11 tires on the stock 15" aluminum wheels. Wish me luck lol. Ideally, all these trucks really deserve the slightly beefier 5VZ swap or a 5cyl TDi Diesel swap like Austin Niemela does here on KZbin. It's hands down the best option I've seen. Maybe one day!

A lift and tires larger than 31" on any small truck starts to undo the benefits of a small truck: easy to park, easy ingress/egress, easy to load, lower cost of ownership/maintenance. No doubt the extra ground clearance helps off-road but the added large tire strain is more likely to bust something. Front and rear lockers/limited slips are a wiser investment to improve traction off-road.

What size tires did you go back to? I'm trying to move to a 235/75/15 and they scrub on my 93 toyota pickup ext. cab 2wd. They also give very little space in the cargo area to add any weight! I love the stock soft ride and would like to stay close to it. What adjustments would you recommend to make these tires work? TIA.

I think that's very subjective. The stock trucks, while you can argue have a "nostalgic appeal" still leave a lot to be desired by modern standards. And a lot of people would prefer to have a truck that's modded and built properly, lifted properly, etc, because it takes a lot of research, planning, money, and significant amount of time and labor to get it all done. Now, that said, I have a stock 92 4x4 in great condition mechanically but it really needs a paint job and updated suspension, ball joints, etc. So... instead of spending $3000 or more on paint I'm going to Raptorline it for $1000 and spend the other $2000 on lift and suspension components to make it much more offroad capable. In short, there's a lot more usable value in that than just having and old stock truck with a nice paint job. When done right with regearing, diff lockers, etc.. it's simply a much better, more capable truck that is worth more than stock, providing you haven't put 100k miles on the upgrades.

Travis, enjoyed your video. I have a 1997 Hilux single cab with stock suspension and the stock 16" steel wheels. How wide can you go with a set of aftermarket wheels, and how large can the tyres be with the stock set up, before a lift kit is needed?
@oldowl4290
@oldowl4290 11 ай бұрын
No bigger than 33" and you typically need at least a 1" body lift or use 1.5" ball joint spacer, in which case you need to lift the rear too. It's a can of worms. This is why a mild body lift is easy and actually pound for pound keeps center of gravity lower as you're not raising engine and frame. When you do, it's also wise to have a wider stance, but then that enlargens wheel radius,..and back to the can of worms.

@nastyn8te328 Жыл бұрын
You really should have used bigger blocks for the back wheel and also you wanted to stick the blocks on the opposite side at the rear you have more of a chance of the truck rolling off the blocks when it's on the same side of the vehicle you're jacking up to avoid any problems you can put them at the rear of on both tires in this case but with those little tiny bricks you could slide off of your bottle jack very easily especially a bottle jack with a small contact point
