Ironically, MK spectres are more in line with traditional revenants than the Revenants themselves while the Revenants are more in line with Wraiths and the Wraiths are more in line with Spectres. Way to go MK.

This is just an observation, not a dispute. Scorpion seems more like he should've been a revenant, a traditional one, from the beginning. His story of reviving himself/being revived because of a quest for vengeance is pretty much what a revenant is mythology is. The others should be wraiths, as they seem to be made of only the negative parts of the previous soul, or a different take on jiangshi, as they are puppets to a sorcerer.

@@reloadpsi I’m late to the party but i can see why they went with Specter back in the days of the the arcades. Specters are ghost that also tends to haunt the people who wronged them. It works as a metaphor because scorpion is haunting sub-zero. (In the old lore when scorpion was resurrected by Quan Chi) scorpion was someone who could haunt you forever. If he died, he’ll just return back to the Netherrealm only to return and try again. Scorpion was Bi Han’s past haunting him. So maybe that’s why Midway went with Specter back in the day.

They don't care about the story at all. All they care about is the gameplay and it's visibility as a ranked e sport. The only reason there is even any plot in the new games is because the Midway era games spent time developing lore and Netherealm studios knew they could use that lore as s marketing ploy to increase player engagement. Like "Sure guys, Tekken is nice but, look here there is many realms and gods and zombies, very cool right? Be invested in our story mode and watch scenes online and talk about it with your friends!!!" The plot though is just paper thin st this point. It's just rehashing established lore without introducing anything worthwhile. It speaks volumes that the "best written" game in the new trilogy was just a remake of the original 3 games.

That's why Star Wars became the mess that it is now as soon as Disney got ahold of it. @@TheJayspyder the dragon Ball part is a bit of stretch. Super wasn't entirely supervised by Toriyama, it was delegated due to which was made a mess out of. But when Toriyama got majority in the development, that's when we got Dragon Ball Super: Broly which was amazing. Star Wars was doomed to become a mess as it is today ever since it was bought by Disney. Disney will always look for money even if it doesn't please the fans.

Here is another reason I'm sour about Drahmin and Moloch being dropped; being ACTUAL demons from the netherrealm is a much needed discussion in modern MK. Since the reboot, the only demons we've had are literal cannon fodder that either fly or walk and are easily dispatched with small arms fire. They appear to be feral creatures for the most part. We had an opportunity to elaborate on this with MKX since Scorpion could actually summon a demon partner for attacks, but the demon went unnamed and was quickly forgotten come MK11. Moloch and Drahmin were not stupid, they were in fact quite smart and horrifyingly powerful. Powerful enough to put fear into Quan Chi, servant of Shinnok, and powerful enough to canonically beat the shit out of Scorpion, who back in the original timeline was no bitch. The only complaints I've heard for them is that they had limited movesets, which could be EASILY fixed nowadays. I foresaw Moloch having a moveset similar to Solomon Grundy in Injustice 1. I'm curious as to why they haven't given Geras a Drahmin based skin. perhaps because that requires actual thought. Plus, could you imagine an intro for Moloch where the owl drops his ball only for his hand to explode up through the floor to grab it as he's summoned to the battle?

The Netherrealm itself has really been thrown under the bus in the NRS era. The Oni, like Drahmin & Moloch and other atypical Demons such as Ashrah, really added so much to the lore of the realm itself. Now it is just home to Shinnok, Quan Chi and their generic soldiers.

@@pious83 People forgot the incredibly important plot point that the Netherrealm EATS sorcery and only by being close to Soul Stones (special effigies built by sorcerers) could a sorcerer SLOWLY regain SOME of his power. Scorpion gained power while Quan Chi HAD NEXT TO NO POWER. The fact that he had no power to spare is why Scorpion beat the shit out of him non stop, and since in hell, if you die you don't really go anywhere, so Scorpion butchered and murdered quan chi only for him to pop back again and again. It was only when Moloch and Drahmin were watching one of the beatings where Quan Chi said "if you protect me from this Specter, I'll free you from the Netherrealm!" Moloch and Drahmin said "okay" and so they became quan chi's bouncers, but quan chi's magic was still fading. He happened upon runes that told of the Dragon King and part of the runes (which he seared into his flesh to remember them and use them) were used to get out of the netherrealm, leaving Moloch and Drahmin behind. Moloch and Drahmin, however, found that the portal Quan Chi made was still open and followed it into Outworld where they decided they were going to hunt down Quan Chi and torture him before devouring him for his betrayal. Shang Tsung came across them and kept them in the basement of the tower where he regularly fed them mortals, a delicacy they rarely had in the netherrealm, and this gained their loyalty to a degree and thus were his ace for the eventual moment Quan Chi may try to betray him. But yeah, that's all gone, Ashura is gone, the vampires and the entire realm of Vaternus is gone. Fucking gone.

Legion Beast Moloch and Drahmin only beat Scorpion because they teamed up on him and even then based on the picture during Scorpion's deadly alliance ending heavily implied that they were still struggling despite them taking him on together so I wouldn’t really call them powerful but simply lucky enough to win somehow.

1:13 Little correction here. While Scorpion got reversed into Hanzo there, the comics (I know how horribly unreliable they are) stated that Hanzo fought Havik and Havik tried to get Hanzo to use his fire powers but Hanzo could not and Havik killed him and his soul was, once again, sent to the Netherrealm. Back in the Netherrealm, Hanzo was locked in a fight with his "demon self", representing his drive for vengeance AKA Scorpion while his human self represented his drive to move past his desire for revenge. Hanzo eventually won and when he did, he realized that he knew where the gateways into and out of the Netherrealm were and could freely travel between them, which he used to pop out into Outworld, rip off Havik's head, drop it off in the netherrealm then pop back out onto earthrealm. This makes Hanzo's death make even LESS sense in MK11 since if he were to die, it would take him all of about an hour for him to pop back to life via the gateways he knows to use. Talk about a fucking mess. Oh, also, the reason the Dragon King's army was undefeatable was because Onaga had the unique power to basically point his finger and resurrect his soldiers as soon as they died. He did this to the MK warriors who fell against the Deadly alliance. Deception basically revealed that BOTH Shang Tsung and Quan Chi were total idiots not knowing WHY the army was undefeatable and THOUGHT that imbuing them with souls was all they had to do to have an army that would win any battle, when the truth is that Onaga's power was what made it possible at all.

This was... probably the best analysis/comparison of all the different types of reanimation in Mortal Kombat. Just feels like each game in the Reboot era had different contributing writers who had no idea what the previous definition was so they just took it in their own direction. Muddying Scorpion and Noob Saibot's spectre/wraith labels in comparison to the term "revenant" is a huge problem, especially when they're all extremely different in their execution. I miss when people would die and just be reborn in the Netherrealm. Why is it so difficult to remain consistent? Also, canon ball. Nice.

You make good points and as for me I’ve always viewed the revenants as part of class of undead and made up my own ranking of how I personally believe they are in terms of how powerful or weak they are: Wraith: being the strongest since the lore implied that your soul had to be sent to the deepest parts of the NetherRealm to be transformed into this very dark and evil form with shadow powers like Noob Saibot. Specter: second strongest Revenant: strong but not as strong as the other undead classes Zombie: weakest for obvious reasons except for zombie liu kang.

Another way to explain would be something like: Wraith: Your soul being tainted by an Elder God (I always liked the thought that Noob was altered by Shinnok instead of Quan Chi) Tainting their spirit whilst losing their body. This explains why Noob considers himself as the perfected undead warrior and it makes sense on Shinnok's part as he sees value in having Bi Han on his side after Bi Han had defeated him Spectre: An undead warrior who had willed himself back to life rather than be brought back with aid from sorcerer's or Elder Gods. Keeping their spirit and body Revenant: A warrior brought back to life via a sorcerer or necromancer. Tainting their soul while keeping their body. Zombie: A warrior who's soul no longer reside in their body. Only leaving a corpse. As for Sindel, she was brought back in whole. Both body and spirit but was put under mind control. As to why, she remains looking like she can win a beauty contest, while also keeping her soul. As far as which is stronger, I agree with your list for these reasons.

I'd argue Quan Chi was shown as a Necromancer in the original timeline. In MK:A he was shown summoning skeletons from the ground to attack Jax in the opening cinematic. In addition, your description of the revenants also apply to Bi-Han in some regard. His return as a Wraith corrupted his soul and blackened his body. Following that, he shows a deep hatred towards Kuai Liang, resents his mortal life, and worked under Quan Chi. Mind you, the very same being he defeated in Mythologies along with Shinnok. If he was like that in life, I'd heavily doubt Kuai would be as determined to restore him to the light.

Upon rewatching this video, it really goes to show how limited the NRS timeline is now. There used to be multiple different factions at play, now its just the good guys vs the bad guys. There used to be multiple different realms, now its just three different realms. There used multiple different forms of resurrections, now everyone is just a Revenant. Now they seem to be doing it with gods now, it used to be Demi-Gods, regular gods and Elder Gods but now Demi-Gods and regular gods are the same thing since Raiden is for some reason called a Demi-God so I guess he is no different from Rain or Taven. Pretty much all these cool concepts the older games gave us have been watered down and removed. There are only two factions, only three realms, only one type of undead and everything below an Elder God is just a Demi-God.

Great video as always, you are easily the best channel with MK-related contet. I'd only like to make a very small correction to 2:58. I don't think it's ever said in Deception that that's how Onaga revives his army, I think it's only MKDA where Shang Tsung uses the souls of other people to revive the warriors (and you're right, that type of puppet warrior with somebody else's soul counts as a different entity) but in Deception we see that Onaga himself has the power to revive dead warriors both in body and soul with mind control on top, something he uses on the kombatants too and you correctly classified at 2:22. A power that according to certain character endings such as Havik's can be passed down to whoever takes his heart. The implication seem to be that in MKDA Quan Chi mistakenly thought that Onaga's army was undefeatable on its own while really it was thanks to Onaga's power. When the Dragon King first appears there also is the cool scene of the army bowing to him and the green light in their eyes disappearing, meaning that Shang Tsung's power got instantly swiped away by Onaga.

Character being "Undead" or a Spectre seems to be NRS:s way to get the character return..or they might just think that making a Dead character undead/Wraith is an easy way to make him/her a "Good" Villain.I kinda miss the basic/old days when there was Shang tsung and Shao kahn and they had allies and they were vs the good team. I like how Shang Tsung’s undead is limited to the souls he stole and requires a physical body, but Quan Chi, a demon, has access to all the souls in hell & create bodies from scratch! The only time he’s shown using a body is to completely resurrect Sindel. That would arguably make her alive and not undead until nightwolf kills her!

Probably, the question is outdated, but all the works of Quan Chi look more like models of varying degrees of thoughtfulness. From Scorpio to a group of revenants, it's like developing from less perfect to more perfect in an attempt to maintain a balance between submission/obedience and the abilities that each character has, which makes them strong fighters. Revenants are just a more advanced model of artificial undead. At least that's what it looks like.

(I wanted to copy over a reply to a question asking about the undead status of Smoke, since it was left a little ambiguous, and after some research I wanted to take a stab at a headcanon version for any additions I might've missed or feedback from the community) His origin told us that he was intended as a sacrifice by a cult to an enenra (a form of Yokai, which is described as a demon of smoke and darkness). The ritual doesn't go to plan and results in the enenra possessing Smoke and taking to a form of pure smoke before killing all of the cultists. After Smoke is finished, he reverts to human form and doesn't remember any of what transpired. It is not explicitly stated that an enenra can or cannot posses living people, so I'm making the assumption that this enenra left Smoke after the failed ritual, whilst leaving him with smoke based powers as a leftover from being subject to the being's power, so I'm taking some creative liberties. After his death in MK9, Quan Chi could recognise this lingering power as the leftovers of being possessed by this enenra, and wanting to have him reborn in service to him, Quan Chi could make a deal with the demon, allowing it to possess the Revenant body of Smoke and fully transform him into an enenra, in return for service to Quan Chi. In summary, Smoke was brought back from the dead as a Revenant, only for Quan Chi to make a deal with an enenra, who had previous experience with Smoke when he was alive, in order for the demon to gain a body to possess, whilst Quan Chi gets a more powerful minion at his disposal. That's my personal take, based on some research into Enenras from the Yokai wiki, with some creative liberties inserted to fit this headcanon better.

The dialogue in Scorpion's case never made any sense, since he was never under 100% control by Quan Chi, unlike the revenants. When Quan Chin tells him yo kill sub zero he says "I will not. He has been defeated", so Quan Chi HAS TO CONVINCE HIM to do as he says with an animation. One thing the MK animated movie did really good was make it so that Scorpion had complete free will when in spirit of vengance mode, so he didn't need to turn into a human to kill the shit out of Quan Chi, which is always a nice thing to see :)

Here's an idea... Revenant - Just like classic myth (and D&D) revenants are people who revive themselves to take vengeance or achieve some goal. (scorpion) Wraith - Basically the "revenants" from the new timeline, people revived by Shonnok (not Quan Chi) as servants. Zombie - A soulless husk, like Armageddon Lu Kang Shadow - Since Quan Chi has a beef with Bi Han, have him ask Shinnok for Bi Han as a special minion Boom, now they all make sense, and Quan Chi doesn't have to be a necromancer.

On the topic of realms, they really need to show off more than just Outworld, Netherrealm and Earthrealm. Besides Chaos and Order Realm, make some new realms for us to see. Show us the Nightmare Realm that Freddy came from and what made Tremor a god, show us what MK's heaven is suppose to be, maybe have a different realm break off from Outworld so we see where say the Shokans came from or the Centaurs. Also, figure out how to get Motaro to work in the 3D era, Centaurs are pretty much non existent in MK now, remember when they where the rivals of Shokan, not Kotal's people?

I think a cook project would be to rewrite the whole series from start to finish, whilst keeping the characters whole. Maybe bringing in the element of Raidens foolish message to himself but doing it in a way that makes a little more sense, and making the any deaths have some real impact?

I think the reason why MKX made all these characters just "revenants" is because Quan Chi had to create all of them (except Kung Lao) in a relatively short span of time and had to utilize a weaker method of ressurection, which turned them into jobbers.

revanents are one of the worst thing that happened to the series, i've never liked this concept and they just keep forcing it clearly with no thought to what they are or how they really work. I actually do like quan chi as a villain but nrs gave him way too much power and too big a place in the story.

Revenants are okay. But the rules about them are inconsistent. The wiki claimed that Revenants are supposed to hold more power than their living kounterparts (Quote: "Revenants tend to have their former abilities amplified" - last sentence of first paragraph on the article "Wraith" (Revenant redirects there)). While this can sometimes be perceived in cutscenes, such as Revenant Liu Kang one-shotting Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, and Fujin in MK11:Aftermath, in terms of actual gameplay, this is pretty much never shown to be the case, as NRS instead basically puts you against the default kombatant, but with a revenant skin on. I can approve of the existence of revenants as it gives the kombatants on the good side the incentive to try and save their fallen komrades from Quan Chi's necromancy. Unfortunately, steps are almost never taken to reverse their revenant state. Outside of Jax, Scorpion, and Sub Zero (And technically Johnny Cage) being restored because they happened to be near Quan Chi when he got his 4PM dick flattening, the only other restored revenants are Sindel, by hand of Shang Tsung and Fujin who were supported by Nightwolf and Queen Sheva, and Liu Kang, after Raiden merged his past and present revenant versions together. That said, if past and present versions of the remaining revenants continue to persist - such as with Kabal and Jade - then Raiden could theoretically merge them together too. I guess he just doesn't see the need to, or something.

Another odd issue is, why was Scorpion revived with more powers, BiHan revived with different powers, and everyone else revived with the same powers? Why wouldn't Quan Chi give everyone new BiHan based powers and obedience? He could have revived Scorpion in this way. Maybe it was because Scorpion was too much of a threat so he dialed it back, but we have nothing to substantiate this so...

The whole idea behind revenants was huge mistake. They should kept them as a separate undead type, created by a process known only to high ranking members of the Brotherhood of Shadows by using the souls of mortals that were never exposed to the Netherealm, unlike Bi Han that was already exposed and thus corrupted or tainted by the time of his death. I just hope they completely disappear in MK12 and they return the classic undead types with defining characteristics and processes of creation.

As a huge mk fan and founder of a Wiki myself I used to contribute there until I gave up because of the general direction the site started to take, and admins not even being willing to discuss things like giving a lower canon priority to the MKX comics. It's so bad it hurts. I even considered starting a second, more accurate MK Wiki, but already having my own to work on it would have been too much work.

(Which therefore can't be explained as a new timeline thing) I was glad that in MK11 Scorpion still uses the names from MK9, it shows that despite giving Kittlesen a lot of freedom over MKX they at least gave priority to having continuity with the games over the comic, proving me right. Yet despite all this MK Wiki still goes as far as placing the comic between MK9 and MKX in each character's gallery. Ugh I can't stand that! I often browse through the galleries to do fanarts on DeviantArt, and each time it aggravates me. I mean even if it's 100% canon it's still a derivate media, it should go at the end of the gallery after the main games.

Hi, Snake! I saw your video, and I have a few things to say that might interest you. I looked up what specter and wraith mean, and it turns out that they're synonyms for ghost. Obviously, neither Scorpion nor Noob Saibot are ghosts. Whether this was a deliberate choice by Midway, or Midway never bothered to consult a dictionary and used specter and wraith to sound kool (it was the nineties, after all) is unknown. Noob Saibot's MK9 bio calls him a revenant: "Noob Saibot's origins are unknown, but he is likely a revenant: a fallen warrior resurrected by the Netherrealm sorcerer Quan Chi to fulfill a dark objective. [...]" Ed Boon himself says that Scorpion is the original revenant in a Tweet: twitter.com/noobde/status/605066680742453248 A revenant, according to European folklore, is a zombie that doesn't rot/decompose or eat human flesh, and retains their intelligence and memories. They are driven by one emotion (love or vengeance). A popular example of a revenant is The Crow. The revenants in MKX and MK11 are driven by anger/bitterness/hatred, courtesy of Quan Chi. With all this in mind, NRS saying they're all revenants can either come off as their attempt to fix a past mistake by using the correct term by real world standards, or just make everything more confusing. Or both, considering what the storytelling is like. I hope I cleared some things up!

I really don't like this who Specter = Revenant thing. You know I was under the impression that being revived as a specter might reinforce the negative aspects of your personality but you're still you. Example: Scorpion came back from the dead for the purpose of getting revenge on Sub Zero because he was under the impression that Sub Zero murdered his family. Once his revenge was complete however Scorpion was still around and when he learned the truth of what happened he didn't stay evil because... fuck it. No he actually became a more heroic character, even fighting as a champion for the Elder Gods. Because he was only filled with vengeance for a single guy, he doesn't hate literally everyone. There's a delineation between him and a character like Liu Kang who when he was raised from the dead he became a slave to Quan Chi. And then Liu Kang decided he hates all of Earthrealm because... why again? I thought his hatred for Raiden was because Raiden doomed all the people he was sworn to protect, why is he killing Earthrealmers now? There's a story here I'm sure but it wasn't even given a chance because nu-nu-Liu Kang just showed up to steal any potential thunder away

The G.O.A.T being neutral doesn’t make you evil either otherwise there would be no point in the distinction and also how was he and Bi-Han supposed to know that Quan Chi was planning on deceiving them both? You expect them to be mind readers? Also he got sent to the NetherRealm because Quan Chi resurrected him genius but he was never an evil person by heart, you have the entire lore from both timelines to know this story and just as a sidenote in case you use this as an argument the movies and tv series are non canon.
