Taylor Swift’s Lover Fest was cancelled and her Lover era was cut a year short. So she built a studio in her house and switched to indie music for Folklore and Evermore!

"Prism" and "Witness" were originally conceived as darker albums. Had Daisy not been born yet, I wonder if "Smile" would've taken a darker turn at the onset of COVID.
@RonyChatter3 күн бұрын
Well, Katy can never really make "dark" music. Whenever she's tried to do that, she ends up going back to that "i am still strong, i am going to recover" leaving no space for the "human" in her. Look at By The Grace Of God.. It has a very interesting verse with great lyrical gems but once the chorus comes, it reels back to the hollow optimism making her earlier sadness unrelatable. It seems like Katy tried to appeal to people with Prism and Witness as her darker work but they really were nothing of that sort.
@OpticalSorcerer3 күн бұрын
@RonyChatter Katy's optimistic, so she doesn't like to put herself in that kind of headspace. She wanted to heal with "Prism" following her divorce and rrcover following the 2016 election with "Witness."
@RonyChatter2 күн бұрын
@@OpticalSorcerer I suspect, Prism started as a dark project but the label said we want hits and we want them asap so stop writing all this sad stuff and make the hits happen. And that's why Greg Kurstin who was the architect of "By The Grace Of God" was dropped from her collaborators and she re-circled back with Max/ Dr Luke- the hitmakers. Prism that's why seems very hollow, it's like Teenage Dream the sequel but more BORING. Like Roar is a blatant rip-off of Brave, Dark Horse is hella cringe, Birthday was trying to be Last Friday Night and failed, This Is How We Do is again a pretty mid/bad song. And the vision for anything she's put out since Prism is so distorted. She'd say something while promoting it, and the album would be a total 180 from that!!?
@OpticalSorcererКүн бұрын
@@RonyChatter I disagree about your dislike for it--I LOVE Prism--but I agree that corporate influence plaued a role, especially since dark/edgy-pop wouldn't become a big thing for several years later. In fact, I think something similar was done for "Smile" or "143"; "Smile" had NO collabs, but then "143" had 3 (and weirdly, they chose her collab with Doechii over 21 Savage as a single).
@RonyChatterКүн бұрын
@@OpticalSorcerer You can have your version of the story but the fact still remains, Greg Kurstin said it clearly that Katy literally outed him suddenly one day and that he had no idea why coz everything was going fine.. Also, Prism is very, very hollow and soul-less. It is bland and is using the same 2010-isc sound with a little 2013 twang and nothing more. There is no personal growth between Teenage Dream and Prism and the sound of both the albums isn't too different either. You're going to look me in the eye and say Roar is different from anything else on Teenage Dream? She was still trying to grapple on the TN success and that worked for a while but soon (during Witness) it would falter badly.

I feel like we would also had Rihanna's reggae album. She said she wanted to tour along with new music and COVID made that impossible.
@RonyChatter3 күн бұрын
Rihanna never planned on returning to music. She has made it very clear now that music was never her "passion" it was just a route to lead her to her actual destination- being a voice for black woman, inclusivity for all people and being a fashion icon. Rihanna has also kinda said that she is retiring and the way she keeps declining questions considering her music is so indicative of that. She was never planning to take music as her passion, so it's understandable that she wants to step out of that lane.

Every artist was impacted by Covid one way or another: some in better ways than others. A lot of album releases were delayed or impacted in bad ways because they relied on a more traditional promo cycle. (for example chromatica) Other artists managed to adapt their albums style to the times and those required less traditional promo (for example folklore)

For Taylor Swift, the pandemic causing her: - Have to cancel the Lover Fest that supposed to begin in April 2020 - Have to cancel the release of Cruel Summer as a single to support the Lover Fest (luckily, it was finally released three years later to support The Eras Tour) - With those two above happened, it led to Taylor creating folklore and evermore (aka, two of her best albums)

How about BTS? They had a massive world tour planned for 2020 and then were going to enlist in the military for their mandatory service after the tour was completed. Then the pandemic happened, their entire tour was canceled and they couldn't leave South Korea for around 18 months. Not to mention they had just released a new album that they weren't able to promote properly because of covid restrictions. Although good things did happen like they released another album, had number 1 songs, and earned Grammy nominations which probably wouldn't have happened if not for the pandemic. But they definitely had to change a lot of their plans and delayed their military enlistment because of the pandemic and unfortunately never got to tour before enlisting. That's why so many fans are eager for their return in 2025 because fans have been waiting for a world tour since 2020 (more than likely they'll tour in 2026).
