So: Cotton in winter clothing is complicated! Cotton kills is a great dummy rule, and it probably saves a lot of toes. But cotton does have properties you might want in certain layers! Cotton is really good at absorbing moisture, and it dries not-terrible fast. Hard weaves like canvas can resist abrasion and even keep moisture out BY being saturated (see: canvas water bags), and soft weaves like flannel can feel amazing against the skin, or allow less friction than wool as a lining layer. But cotton doesn't insulate when wet. At all. You only want cotton against your skin in the cold if it won't get wet: flannel sheets, say. If you may sweat or get drenched, you'll have a layer of water being held against your skin, pulling your heat away 25 times faster than air. Bad news. Some old thermal underwear has a 50/50 mix of wool and cotton, which is better, but I still wouldn't want to be too far from a heated building working in it. And some net shirts used cotton, but that's not enough mass to hold much water in comparison to how much airspace they create and how much transpiration of moisture they allow. (Try one if you never have. Modern ones are synthetic and WARM) But mostly, cotton next to the skin is inadvisable. I've seen people lose skin over it in person. Cotton as a coat lining (probably not next to your skin) can be great! Very typical in old mackinaws. Your base layer will pass moisture to the cotton, which will then do its absorbing and drying out away from your skin. Instead of making you cold, it will now keep you drier. It prevents friction between wool layers and allows for smoother movement without the chilly feel of synthetic linings. And it adds a bit more of a wind barrier to a wool coat. Cotton is great as an outer layer in winter, think Anoraks. Hard, tight canvas keeps off snow and turns away sharp branches and abrasive bark, and keeps wind out. And it dries more quickly than wool. (A bad thing against skin, a fine quality in a shell.) I hope this is helpful!

Cottom works well in dry cold -13 and lower temps...just dont get it wet. Wool over everything imho but good cotton garments are great for the right circumstances. I prefer moleskin over cotton also but you pay for what you get
@tbrew82222 жыл бұрын
cotton over acrylic, over wool. If they are all in contact, you can take off the cotton and wring it out at the end of the day, while the other layers and skin feel dry. This is what I do with muck boots since the rubber prevents breathing/ evaporation and you always have wet feet. For my upper layers, I just wear wool and a rainshell with vents and pit zips to cut the wind when needed

Cotton loses loft when wet so it does no insulating at all when wet

My wife got a Packer last year, I love it. It’s like walking around in your most comfortable/snuggly blanket, the collar is super warm when flipped up. The only down side is that it can look a bit out of place at times, it is most definitely a statement piece. But I’d get one again, it’s great in the dead of winter

Love seeing more filson reviews. Because I like using my wool jackets for activities like hiking, I honestly feel like these coats and even a double mac would likely be too warm and bulky, which is what makes me stick with the single mac. It’s a great coat for when you’re really putting in some miles because of how breathable it is. One thing I would suggest on fit- if you’re someone who actually plans to use the rear game pocket on a filson jacket, make sure you get it sized so where you don’t look like you have a big tumor when you fill it up with gear. Great video!

Sounds like you need the Filson Mack Tin Cruiser if you can find one… Filson's Mack Tin Cruiser Jacket blends the brand's two signature fabrics: 100% virgin Mackinaw Wool and oil finish Tin Cloth. This coat is lightweight, water-resistant, and ultra-durable, without sacrificing comfort or style. With a soft-flannel lining in the body, and synthetic twill in the sleeves for easy on/off over layers, this will be your go-to jacket for years of winters to come. I’ve had one for 4 years now and can’t fault it…

The packer is a real statement. Really stand our beautiful coat. I imagine living in NYC you can just wear 1 layer underneath and that would be fine. Great for little activity. I prefer thinner layers when I'm moving a lot and then resting in cold places. The packer packs a lot of weight to pack away if you get too hot. I would own it and love it though 👍

The double mackinaw is better imo. Having owned several mackinaw versions, and the latest yukon anorak. The anoraks are useless, the classic mackinaw and double mack will always be timeless pieces. I want pure wool, not an acrylic base. I would love to get my hands on a wool packer eventually but its too steep in price, the 670$ price tag for the regular mackinaw is ridiculous in its own right. I just picked up the limited edition short tin cruiser jacket and I absolutely love it, super burly piece of gear.

The Filson packer was just too expensive and there was a clear quality difference between the vintage ones and a new one. The newer ones are made of virgin wool (not really my thing) whereas the older ones were made of recycled wool (shorter staple fiber) and were thus more rough to the touch. That was fine but the sheepskin on them was rather unremarkable. If you look at well kept older packer coats from the 90s, you'll see that the sheepskin is more rough and not as full. Also, very very very aggressively bleached. The newer coats come with a new zealand merino sheepskin. Very silky soft, but again, ridiculously expensive. I got some military wool blankets (95% wool, 5% nylon (weft)) and sewed them together. I happen to live near a tannery, so I have access to pretty good sheepskin, but if you can't get any, buy a medical Sheepskin pad online, they're usually only about $40 and you can get 2 collars out of one. What's more is that I added a hidden zipper to the hem to which I can attach an extra piece of fabric. Sometimes, you need the warmth on the back of the thigh but not while moving. Maybe I'll make a video of it.

I have a single Mac and would never buy another. Really well made of fine material but a very dated design which is heavily compromised by the tiny overlap at the front and the shirt like gaps at the wrist end of the sleeves which let in the icy wind and out any warmth. Not very windproof and grossly overpriced. My warmest coat is the Lairg wool coat by Hoggs of Fife. Priced at £229 in the UK it leaves all my other coats (i have over 20) way behind for warmth and wind resistance. Filson is totally outclassed unless you happen to like the look.

I bet you a simple puffy has it beat in terms of warmth:weight ratio. A puffy is just a much better design. Thin and densly woven shell against wind, with loose and airy batting insulation between the layers of windproof material. I wish they would make all wool puffies both with a thin dense wool shell layer and loose wool batting on the inside. The quilting technology is simply much more efficient than thick weaves. Thick weaves are heavy. The only place where this type of coat has a real use I think is in very hard labour/lumberjack scenarios, where you mght experience a lot of friction . Also this coat misses a hood! So to me its an incomplete garment, since we lose most our heat through our heads
