Painting in the BG by Thomas Cole, "Destruction" en.wikipedia.o...
Here are the lyrics :
In atro spiranti, semisupino accubanti,
Clades diei mihi cicatrices videntur.
Et… Quo magis ego conor, eo minus cedit res,
Sensus putrefiunt, dum vita transit.
Oh oh, Ignosce quod talis es, quod quaedam consequi vis.
Scias id non abire, quamvis te occultes.
Cum e lecto surgis, noli ita stupere
ob singula saxa in scaena, mea parva atra aetas.
Chartas lusorias seligo, praesentiens quod prope est,
Incisiones in facie dicunt id sibi difficile.
Et… Motores deficiunt denuo. Simulatio habet fines.
Animus non ídem est ex abnegatione ortus.
Oh oh, eo nunc semper maereo, musica male sonat.
Scio id non abire, quamvis me occultem.
Si e lecto surgis, et me adstantem
Invenis, apertis oculis, pagellam combure, mea parva atra aetas.
Eo nunc semper maereo, musica male sonat.
Scis id non abire, quamvis te occultes.
Si forte e lecto surgo, stupentem et solum
In proscaenio me invenies, mea parva atra aetas.
Delectatione nauseatus, praevideo quod veniet.
Imago mortuorum, in mente mea manet.
Custodes ad deum iurant, manuballistas amorem dare.
Sed scio amicos et me terga daturos certe.
Si e lecto surgis, inveni nos in via ad pontem.
Saxum et iram fer, mea parva atra aetas.
Eo nunc semper maereo, musica male sonat.
Scio id non abire, quamvis me occultem.
Si e lecto surgis, et me adstantem
Invenis, apertis oculis, pagellam combure, mea parva atra aetas.
parva atra aetas, parva atra aetas
parva atra aetas, parva atra aetas
parva atra aetas, parva atra aetas
…adstantem, apertis oculis, pagellam combure, mea parva atra
aetas.

If you take the lyrics from the video description and paste them into Google translate (which, surprisingly, has Latin), you'll see that these lyrics seem to be pretty well done, as they are not a simple literal translation of Little Dark Age as the subtitles in this video would have you believe. They're actually reworked to fit into Latin and still maintain the overall meaning. There are some great lines in there: "Sensus putrefiunt, dum vita transit" is "the feelings start to rot, one wink at a time" according to the subtitles. But it seems that it actually means "the feelings rot as life passes by," which I think sounds even better. "Motores deficiunt denuo, simulatio habet fines" is "the engine's failed again, all limits of disguise" based on the subtitles, but a direct translation comes out as "the engine failed again, simulation has its limits" which, again, sounds really nice. An excellent job was done on not merely translating the lyrics, but re-interpreting them, and I think it's a shame that the video's subtitles are just the original Little Dark Age lyrics because it masks a lot of that work that was done.
@lorenzo8208
@lorenzo8208 Жыл бұрын
To give a more "human" translation: -"sensus putrefiunt, dum vita transit" is "the senses start to rot, as life passes" - "motores deficiunt denuo, simulatio habet fines" is "the engines failed again (like "twice", "a second time", word is "denuo"), the simulation has its limits". Obviously there are more examples, like "clades diei mihi cicatrices videntur" is "the ruins of the day seem like scars to me". They did a pretty good job

It sounds good, but for future reference, long and short vowels are very important in Classical Latin. A lot of Classical speakers exaggerate them much too much, but you ignored them completely, which isn't good either. For example, it's parvā ātrā aetās, and all the vowels with bars over them should be held a little longer. You pronounced them like párva átra áetas. Using stress rather than length is ok, it's what happened in Ecclesiastic Latin, but the stress was misplaced. This happened quite often. As a general rule, Classical Latin 'stresses' (actually lengthens) the last syllable (obviously it's way more complicated than that, but luckily wiktionary will tell you exactly where the long vowels are), whereas you normally stress the first syllable. As I said, it sounds good regardless, it's just something to bear in mind in future

Besides Renata Flores Rivera's covers, I know of only a few songs that have been translated. Anyone noticing parallels between the fall of Rome and where Western civilization is today? Extreme tension and excessive polarization (both within and without), a decline of faith and artistry, prices soaring as quality lowers on a dramatic scale, a steady weakening of the military, a loss of cultural-identity as so many cultures and beliefs from across so many ways-of-life are all stirred into one pot (nomatter how incompatible or inherently-opposed), excessive sexual-immorality, increasing debauchery across all classes of people, gold being valued above all else, and arrogance mingled with complacency ruling the day as bread-and-circuses utterly-blind everyone.
