I'm already seeing a lot of comments that the heat is from the blades being hot from the motor. These motors are designed to have as little friction as possible but there is some heat generated by the bearings in the blade. But don't worry, a better experiment was done than this with a spinning paddle wheel with no motor and the results were the same. The Joule paddle wheel experiment!

This experiment should work. For better results you should isolate the water recipient (termically), this way you will minimize the heat transfer with the ambient. But the experiment itself should work, basically you are adding work to the system and that converts to the variation of the water internal energy (energy conservation)

@maxjosef66797 жыл бұрын
You are using a 1.5KW machine, which has more power than my hair-dryer, and you really think the heat only comes from the friction of the water molecules? Prove that by spinning the machine without water for a few minutes: If the blades stay cool, as you say, i'll undo my down-vote. (Side note: at 7:15 you can see the boiling origining from the blades, which i guess are heat source hence heat conduction from the engine)

Hey guys, I actually work at blendtec, in the area we make that specific style (designer), and yes the motors get warm, and if you run them for long enough, the heat will eventually radiate through the plastic cover and into whatever’s above it (like water). However, there is little heat conducted through the blades, because of the bearing inside the jar. Most of the heat was created by friction caused by water molecules hitting other water molecules, and the friction between the blades and the water. So yes, for the amount he ran the motor, a fuse but of heat would have radiated through the cover, and the jar into the water; and from the friction of the bearings inside the jar itself; but I believe most of the heat was caused by friction INSIDE the jar, between the water and the blades
@geckogreg6796 жыл бұрын
Just a quick amendment: The airflow from the fan flows up towards the top of the blender, and that would accelerate the heating of the cover; but the engineers found the is the best way to keep the motor cool and maintain efficient airflow throughout the unit. So yes, there were flaws in the test method, but unless you were to take the cover off of your blender and introduce airflow that directs hot air away from the jar, that would give a more reliable result. DISCLAIMER: I do not recommend you take the cover off of your blender, it would void your warranty (if you had one) and could damage your electronic boards, or the wires or the motor. Just don’t do it
@geckogreg6796 жыл бұрын
Snowey The Fox yeah, you’re right. Friction from the bearings and brushes inside the motor produce heat that will radiate through the plastic cover and raise the temperature of the water, and that is a flaw in the test. But with how fast the blades are moving, I believe most of the heat was caused by friction between the blades and the water

The experiment is not a conclusive one. It has a major flaw. The system is not adiabatic. The blender blades are always metal and are connect directly to the motor (may have some non metals between the joint of the jar and the motor, but not necessarily an insulator). Blenders get hot all by themselves if you leave it on. This is due to the dessipation of heat from the current flowing in the wires of the motor. You should have just kept the motor running all by itself to see how much heat it produced per unit time for constant voltage and speed setting. Then should have added the water and subtracted the values from the observations. The blades should have been made of something that is non conductive and the system should have been made more laboratory like by eleminating external source of heat. The heating up the water although seems logical, the experiment doesn't provide a conclusive result.

He payed the same amount that he would pay for heating up water with a kettle. The electric energy converts into heat nearly at the same rate as it would a kettle do. The only energy losses are by the heat in the motor the noise and the isolation of the blender but if you think about a open kettle were 100°C hot steam floating out it isnt really efficient as well
@tuyiren7813 жыл бұрын
@@Leon-eq6ei disagree, if you ever operated a blender they generate quite a bit of heat on the motor itself. So a lot of the energy is wasted and not used for heating the water. Plus there is indeed the lost of energy due to the sound being made which isn't much but it adds up. Finally this method takes much longer to heat up the water which means more energy is lost to heat going into the environment (air). Overall your bills are gonna look much worse using this method to heat water. Please revisit your physics classes lol.
@Leon-eq6ei3 жыл бұрын
@@tuyiren781 I am studying physics on a university lmao. It is obvious that you will have to pay more but not that much. You wouldnt ever notice it on your electric bill. I did an experiment with two plastic buckets full of Water and the loss in temperatur after 30minutes was like 10%. Estimating that a blender out of glass isolates better then half a milimeter of plastic you wont lose more then 10%. Also need 420kJ to boil 1l water emediately. That is 0.11667kWh or 3.5ct when you take 30ct/kWh and 10% of that would be the loss after 30 min. That would compare to 0.35ct. The energy efficiency of an oven is 90% and the energy efficiency of a modern blender is easily the same or higher. Water has a high specific Heatcapacity which means you need far more energy to heat up water then you would need to heat up the interior of the blender. This means even if the blender is really hot you will just need a portion of the energy compared to the one going into the water. This is why it feels that the energy efficiency of a blender isnt that high. Even if you could boil water emediately with an oven you would safe 0.35ct per liter water. As soon as the water boils 100% of the incoming energy wents out of the water as steam which means that you lose 100% of the energy after the water boils and an iron pot wont stop that. So the energy loss is the same after you reach the boiling point. All in all you would lose like half a cent if you cook a meal with a blender compared to a normal oven. If you cook 60 times a month that would equal to 20ct. Congratulations you are now poor

Hey, I know this is kind of an old video, but I wonder: How much of the heat really comes from the movement. I mean this Blendtec is an absolute beast, cranking it up for so long probably heated the unit up to around the temperature of the surface of the sun. Besides that, the metal blades and metal shaft are probably directly connected to the motor, which is the hottest part in the unit, and therefor also a great conductor. It would have been interesting for the viewer to know how hot the unit / blade become after such a long runtime without water. Because I think your device maybe would just have melted if the water wasn't there, as it probably was just used like cooling fluid for your Blendtec.

The blender's engine also sends some warmth, after all you've been running it for a long time
@Paxmax3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the motor sends much heat because of several layers of plastic separating. The shaft being stainless has poor heat conduction capacity. If I'd take a guess the biggest side contribution would be friction heat from driver plate vs shaft and friction heat from bottom seal to shaft, thru shaft and into water. There are much larger radiant heat losses through the side walls of container.

Great experiment; Just to add, there are various factors to why the temp wad raised, here are some examples: A. Viscosity of the water B. Reynolds number of the surface C. Yeah, there's no way that a person could do that by hand, though keep trying. To boil water in such a way requires a lot of static friction (I'm talking about the friction that is steadily maintained for a period of time which is almost impossible for a person to do unless one is just stirring at a slow pace). I'd have a better chance at boiling water through friction mixture by rolling it around in a flask (takes considerably less effort but likely just as much time). By the way, water will cool by itself, if the surrounding temperature is lower than the water's temperature. But the average stable temperature for water is 44 F (feels cold on the skin but is actually warm to the tongue). I really feel bad for your blender; I hope it got some TLC after that torture you put the motor through...

As the tempereture of liquid molecules increases, its kinetic energy increases, and as the kinetic energy is get enough that water molecules can make its way out to the space, its starts boiling. So, its not about tempereture, its about kinetic energy in respect to preasure. So if we maybe stir the water slightly in vaccum it may starts boiling right at that moment as the kinetic energy will imcreased faster and temperature also, because of low preasure. The same thing is what the artist trying to show, its not the temperature is being transfered from the motor or maybe if he is using an old model of blender. I am a student of 9th grade. And its a simple thing taught by our teachers but the people commenting are seem to be uneducated. Ok great, tell me if there is any mistakes by replying.

@MichaelDavis-zu2ko7 жыл бұрын
Solidatermx Yes, if the blade moves at the same speed. However, in reality, the blade will not move at the same speed if the fluid is more viscous. In the end, it comes down to the output power of the motor. If the motor outputs 1000 watts of actual mechanical power, then that is what will be converted into heat, regardless of viscosity.

Awesome example of how energy does not get destroyed, only transformed. Most people don't normally think of stirring water so fast it boils, and they don't realize friction is in water movement too. The brook is moving fast, but it is colder than ice so i guess it don't occur to most people that the movement it has already warmed it up some, even though it is still colder than ice.

I personally experienced this phenomena in my job working at a water treatment plant several years ago. During an automated pump change, a valve on the outlet of a pump shut but the pump did not shut off as it was supposed to due to a failed part. The 200hp poump ran for several hours just spinning the trapped water before I found the problem at the start of my shift. I shut off the pump and then started to remove the failed part. As soon as I opened the piping with the trapped water, steam began escaping as the pressure drop allowed the heated water to boil off. I just had to let the steam escape and fresh cool water to enter until everything cooled down enough to let me replace the failed part.

When I was in the USN we accidentally did the same sort of thing to a boiler feed pump. They are much bigger, 1200hp motor and a 4 stage pump with over 1000psi shutoff head. For low flow conditions they have a recirculation path that can be aligned to either port or starboard condenser. The watchstanders at the time forgot to check there was a path aligned and burned the pump up. We ended up pulling a pump from the next ship of the class to replace it. The shipyard then repeated the same thing a few months later with one of the reverse osmosis pumps. I happened to walk by at the right time to watch that one and I sat there giggling a bit to myself at the situation, the yard was pretty upset about the feed pump and got some comeuppance.

Ermos Cimpoesu the greater the viscosity harder it is for the mixer to transfer energy by its force and do work.....so if the RATE of transfer of energy ie power is the same as in the above video according to me it will heat much more than water even the work done is same because of higher liquid friction ie viscosity
@30svich7 жыл бұрын
no, it only depends on specific heat capacity if power input is the same.
@MsSomeonenew7 жыл бұрын
Total input power is total input power so on that end you aren't getting anything more out of it. But because highly viscous liquid wouldn't mix as fast and transfer heat to the outside you might see temperature rising faster around the blades.
@30svich7 жыл бұрын
MsSomeonenew, Im afraid you are not correct. viscosity does not depend on how fast the temperature is rising, only specific heat matters. For example, castor oil is 700 times more viscous than bromine, but it will heat up slower (at the same power). conversely, you can also find other examples when a substance is more viscous and heats up faster
