It was done in one take. He had pneumonia and 103 fever while filming this scene. The woman(Debbie Reynolds), playing his love interest said he was a perfectionist and made her cry because she couldnt get the dancing right in the number they did. Im guessing it didnt help that she had new shoes that left her feet blistered and bleeding. In the end she was sitting under a piano crying and Fred Astaire another famous dancer found her and helped her. First he did a completely improvised routine for a solid hr and said dancing never gets easier but taught her the entire routine so she could film it. Later Gene Kelly said he was amazed of how gracious Debbie Reynolds was and continued to talk to him after the movie wrapped.

4:45 - one of my single favorite movie moments! The music swells, the camera pulls back and up, Gene Kelly's dancing becomes HUGE (look how much space he uses after the dance routine being mostly close-up and intimate to that point) - it all adds up and takes your breath away. Magic!

The movie is a must watch. Gene was a very athletic, but also graceful dancer. You have to watch Gene and Jerry the Mouse (from the Tom & Jerry cartoons) dance together from the movie Anchors Aweigh. You will love it. Loved this. ❤️✌️

This is one of the all time greatest dance scenes in the movies by an all time great dancer, Gene Kelly. I showed this video to my grandchildren, ages 3 and 5 and they understood that this man was so in love that he didn't care if he got wet. Also, they noticed how nice he was to give his umbrella to another man. Even at these young ages, my grandchildren could appreciate this scene from 70 years ago. How cool is that!

Films & music completely segregated at that time. Now watch " Stormy Weather" (1943 sll blsck cast ) The tap dance performance of the Nicolas Brothers revered as the greatest ever caught on film. Michael Jackson gave them the highest praise as a major influence.

Great reaction! some info from Wikipedia: In the sequence in which Gene Kelly dances and sings the title song while spinning an umbrella, splashing through puddles and getting soaked with rain, Kelly was sick with a 103 °F (39 °C) fever.[28][29] The water used in the scene caused Kelly's wool suit to shrink during filming.[30] A common myth is that Kelly managed to perform the entire song in one take, thanks to cameras placed at predetermined locations. However, this was not the case; filming the sequence took two to three days.[31] Another myth is that the rain was mixed with milk in order for the drops to show up better on camera; but the desired visual effect was produced, albeit with difficulty, through backlighting But do notice that there are few if any cuts to the video to switch to a different scene - mostly a continuous filiming. So "one take" is many physical minutes long. Multiple takes meant many long hours and actually days to get the seqeunce down perfectly. With a high fever no less

Gene Kelly is one of the greatest dancers of Hollywood. He’s right there with Fred Astaire on the list of great dancers. Singin’ in the Rain is a great movie to watch. One of the classics it takes place in Hollywood just as talkies are coming on the scene-and it has a lot of singing and dancing. Most big stars back then were what was called a triple threat they could act, sing and dance! Those routines were often done in one take. You notice the cuts aren’t as quick as they are today for dancing in music videos. These Guys practiced doing the whole scene in one take. So most of these are one or two takes at the most.

Right before this in the movie is "Good Morning, Good Morning," another top notch dance number. That's higher energy and this is the happy afterward. Singing... was closed out of the Oscars because the year before Gene Kelly's An American in Paris swept up the awards and the Academy didn't want to award too much to a similar(ish) musical film 2 years in a row.

Gene Kelly....one of our most famous dancers, ( tap, ballet and jazz). Gene starred in numerous movies, these are some of his best: Singing In The Rain, (1952) An American in Paris (1951) On The Town (1949) Anchors Aweigh (1945) Gene is a legendary song and dance man, along with Fred Astaire also legendary. Genes has a more athletic style of dance where Fred was more on the romantic style with long graceful lines. Singing in the Rain has several iconic dance scenes in it. This is one of the most iconic. There is another one is called Good Mornin'. It stars Gene along with Donald O'Conner ( another song an dance man of the time and a very young Debbie Reynolds ( in her breakout role). Debbie became a big star in her own right. One of her best movies is The Unsinkable Molly Brown ( you would like this movie I think. Debbie is also the mother of Carrie Fischer (princess Leia of Star War s) there is one more dance number that O'Conner does as a solo called Make 'am Laugh. Gone are the days of these studio musicals. It's a shame because they always lifted spirits and made us forget our troubles for a little while. Anchors Aweigh has another iconic dance scenes with Gene and a cartoon mouse. .Back in the day, it was a big plus if an actor could sing and dance and if a go Over could act and sing. Sammy Davis Jr. is a perfect example of someone who could do it all and do it well. Check out this dance # of his called Bang Bang, from the movie Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964, a Rat Pack movie). Also if you haven't done so yet, please react to Mr. Bojangles by Sammy Davis Jr. (Germany 1985...live) We need more entertainment like this, not the pelvis and booty gyrating stuff singers need to use today to distract from their lack of pure vocal talent.

The giddiness of a child playing in a rain storm completely unconcerned how wet they become, is akin to one who just fell in love and has a whole new life/livelihood stretched out before him are joy filled moments in life. Gene Kelly was great in expressing this exuberance through song and dance! Yes, that was one long take and Kelly was a perfectionist! BTW, did you catch Princess Leah's (Carrie Fisher) mother in the early part of the shot?

Gene Kelly was a true performer. When he did this scene he had a fever of 104° degrees. He was sick. Gene Kelly and several dancers or hoofers (slang) were very athletic and physical in their dancing. Donald O' Connor in "Singing In The Rain" did a song & dance called "Make Them Laugh" He was very comedic and very physical, acrobatic, and athletic in this dance and other dances in the movies. One movie he was dancing on roller skates. Gene Kelly did he own stunts. He also directed the movie "Hello, Dolly" in 1969. Starting Walter Matthau, Barbara Streisand, Louis Armstrong played his trumpet and sang in it.

So this is a slightly late comment, but during the filming of this, Gene Kelly was apparently really sick with a 103 degree fever- they filmed it during the day, putting a huge tarp over a couple of blocks to get the nighttime effect, and they colored the rainwater with milk so it would be visible on film. Kelly's suits, meanwhile, kept shrinking because of the water. For all that this is a great, iconic number, I don't actually think it's Kelly's best dancing even in the context of the movie. There's a great number of his from the movie Cover Girl where he dances with a double of himself- he filmed the entire scene twice, once as his character, once as the double. Technically, it was probably a much more difficult dance than this one. Thank you for reacting to this, though, I really enjoyed it!

This is a must watch movie. Gene Kelly was wearing a wool suit so he had to keep changing his suit. If you watch you can see his suit shrink. Therefore it wasn't one take and the editor did a great job splicing the scene together.

There is a story about this scene that supposedly when Kelly showed up on set to record this scene, he had a raging fever. The director told him to go home, but he refused. Gene Kelly has the flu and was running a fever when he filmed this sequence. He was so good that he made it look like he never felt better in his life. I prefer the camerawork for dance sequences in old movies. They let you see what the performers were doing. In modern films they cut every half second or so, which keeps the audience from seeing the grace and athleticism of the dancers.

The film also is one of the spectacular films made in Technicolor which is a special film stock and technology that is still considered today as possibly the best and most long-lasting film color ever invented. Also starring in Singin In the Rain was another great comic song and dance man of the time Donald O'Connor. I also highly suggest "Born in a Truck" from A Star Is Born (the Judy Garland version of the movie) . . . it's a show stopper. It's sort of in three parts . . . first she's singing in a ball gown, then it switches to a top hat and tails, then her sitting on the stage singing like nobody else. It's wonderful.

Back in the day, actors had to be able to act, sing, and dance. Old movies are the best, I prefer them over what Hollywood puts out today.

This was a great movie about the change from Silent to Talkie movies with Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor.

Gene Kelly has been one of my favorite actors and singers of all time! And this is a wonderful old movie (as MOST wonderful old movies are, well .......... 'WONDERFUL"! Y'all should also react to him in two other fantastic films of his -- "Brigadoon" (co-starring the lovely Cid Charisse, and "Summer Stock" (co-starring the extraordinary Judy Garland)!

There's a good movie called What A Way To Go. It stars Shirley Maclaine and follows her through a string of husbands. Dick Van Dyke (who was in Mary Poppins), Paul Newman, Gene Kelly, Robert Mitchum and Dean Martin. It's a fun movie.

I think Debbie Reynolds, the girl, was 17 at the time. She later became Carrie Fisher’s mother, who became famous as Princess Leia in Star Wars.

It's so charming! I miss that in current movies, we don't see that charisma much. I also enjoy the song Good Morning from the movie, some great scenes.

Modern western civilization is dying a slow death and as it diminishes, it is killing off romance between men and women. Gonna be very hard to reproduce, especially when you add in all of the other spectres playing a role.
