It is about the Jews in Russia around the turn of the 1900's. The Jewish village is destroyed at the end, and the majority of the residents go to America. Which is what really happened.

Tasha, it’s so wonderful that you reacted to this song. This was a Broadway play and I’ve seen it on Broadway and in many local theaters and high school productions. It was made into the movie that you saw the clip from. The themes in the movie are timeless and not for Jewish people but for everyone. It deals with being forced to leave your homes, persecution, children not wanting to follow in the old traditions, love, marriage, etc. It’s beautifully acted and the music and dancing are great. The song Tradition from this movie is fantastic. Guaranteed to bring a tear or two. Another must watch for you. 👏👏👏✌️

This song is about a Jewish family/community in Russia prior to yet another a pogrom to kill and push the Jews out of the nation. Topol is completely awesome. He was brought over from the successful play on Broadway to star in the movie. As to old/classic music it is reinvented continually, back to the classical era of Bach and Beethoven and likely even before.

Great movie. About European Jews having to leave their home, because of decrees and edicts against the Jews. About some of the pogroms and persecutions they faced, and about intolorence. Hope you take time to watch the whole movie, once you've see it, its unforgettable.

This musical is so enchanting. That's the best adjective I can think of. It takes you into their world and makes you forget who or where you are, like being on a dark ride in Disneyland. It takes you in, to the point where you feel like you're one of the family, in that culture and time, experiencing every emotion and mood swing that the characters are going through. One of the greatest ever!

TASHA, you really NEED to watch this BEAUTIFUL movie, it has so many WONDERFUL SONGS, and fantastic DANCING, you have to see the "Bottle Dance" in the wedding scene! I LOVE LOVE it! I have seen this movie SO MANY times since it first came out. It was just on TV ( TCM channel - Turner Classic Movies, shows it often) last week and I watched it again. I KNOW you will love the movie. It takes place in 1905 in a little Jewish village called Anatevka in Russia. Tevye, the one you see here, and his wife Golde have 5 daughters, it is mainly about this family, the other villagers, the traditions that they followed at the time in their faith, marriage, etc. I hope you will watch it, you might need a few tissues as their are some very poignant moments (the wedding) and some sad moments.

One of my favorite movies of all times. The history and the suffering inflicted on the Jewish communities during the Russian pograms is so poignant, and yet they persevered, finding joy where they could, their traditions steadfast and followed them wherever they were forced to go, because without them they would be "as shaky as a fiddler on the roof". The music is absolutely wonderful!! The storytelling in the songs is delightful! I can never express how very much I love this movie!

The movie is about a small Jewish shtetl in Eastern Europe in the late 19th C. during the period of the pogroms, which were state sanctioned attacks on these people. Many people came to the US as a result of this persecution against Jews in Eastern Europe.

The original play opened on Broadway in 1964 and has had many, many revivals over the years, in almost every country and every language. Because it is about a family adapting to change, about parents and children, about marriages, it speaks to every culture. This film version was made in 1971.

I just watched a very good documentary about the making of this film, and it made me want to watch it all over again. I don't think I've seen it since I was a kid, and I know I'd get a lot more out of it as an adult. So many great songs, and a very engaging and dramatic story, as well. It really transports you to another culture, one that most people today would not be at all familiar with.

Fiddler on the Roof was originally a Broadway Show, made into a movie. Many Broadway shows were made into movies after they retired from long runs on "The Great White Way" (meaning the white lights of Broadway) Don't Rain On My Parade... Barbra Streisand , from the movie "Funny Girl." .(Also was on Broadway). Papa...by Barbra Streisand from her movie Yentel( that she directed) That's Jazz by Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong...from the movie High Society,( also starting Sinatra) (a musical remake of the movie The Philadelphia Story) 76 Trombones...Robert Preston, from the movie Music Man ( another movie remake of a Broadway show...Preston started in both) For a current B roadway hit that was made into a movie while it's still on Broadway ( because the tickets are prohibitive in cost and the waiting time to get a seat can take months, the creator, playwrite, director and starring actor, Lin Manuel Miranda turned it into a movie with most of his original cast. The movie is actually better than the stage play because the diff.camera angles catch more of what's going on than can be seen from the audience. I've seen both and Lin Manuel Miranda was spot on with his decision-making the movie version...it showcases each of the featured actors, and there are many. HAMILTON IS THE MOVIE AND BROADWAY SHOW. IT IS PURE GENIUS!!!. A MUST SEE for everyone. The back story is Lin picked up a book at an airport to read on the plane. It was a book about one of our Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton. Lin turned this true American historical time into a musical, but not just any musical. Most of the whole story is told in song with hip-nop, R&B, Pop, Soul and regular style show gunes.. It is spectacular a masterpiece.... The movie was aired on the Disney Plus. If you have to pay to rent it for a month, it's worth it because you will want to watch Hamilton over and over because you can't take it ALL in once or even twice. It is THAT GOOD!! Also, if you haven't listened to The Danish Symphony Orchestra playing the music from the Good, The Bad and The Ugly, put that on your list. It's a must. If you see something questionaable, don't worry. It is from a recurring storyline in the movie. The Orchestra also does great justice to the Star Wars music.

Started as a Broadway musical. It's such a beautiful film. The music kicks ass throughout. Jerome Robbins' choreographed (he also choreographed West Side Story). John Williams (Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, E.T.) scored and conducted. Stellar cast. Your reaction was fun to watch. I appreciate your observations about newer songs that borrow, sometimes quite a lot, from older music. Yeah, it's way better when you get to know the originals, and each original is another rabbit hole of music in itself. I definitely recommend this film. I think a reaction to it would generate a lot of views. I know I'd watch it!! Subbing, and all the best.

This musical was about several things: the tsar of Russia in the very late 19th century forcing the Jewish people from theit lands; the practice Jews and other ethnic groups had of matchmaking (which in it's own way was a commentary on interreligious/interacial marriage and the generation gap and revolution that was going on when this film came out.) This was so subtly done that when I saw it as a child I never noticed this! Came to realize recently my dad tried to matchmake for me when I was in my teens but being a rebellious rocker chick, I would have none it. Being a rock vocalist, I attract struggling musicos. Maybe my dad and Tevye knew best..lol. Ty 4 showing this!

Very cool to see your reactions to songs from musicals! I used to mime along with this song when I was like 4. LOL. Of all the big musical films of the era, (Fiddler, King & I, Singing in the Rain, Oliver, South Pacific, etc etc) I think Fiddler on the Roof really might be my favorite. There are really no fluff songs, every one is a banger, their meanings and their scenes also being super interesting. The entire storyline is very moving and historically important in its context.

The movie is important to me for 2 reasons (aside from being amazing): my parents took a 2 year old me to see it and I watched some, rested in their laps for the rest of it (memories of my safe and happy feelings with my folks back then in early 70s NY); and my grandma escaped with her family (she was 4) from Russia - old peasant Jews made their way to the Catskills NY. It is very important to keep this alive for me and subsequent generations.

Tasha, it is an AWESOME musical, and I am sure you'll love it. You laugh, you'll cry, you'll be joyous at times, hopeful and sad in others, but you will never be bored or wanting. I'd actually LOVE to see you do a movie reaction to it. The singer's name here is Chaim (or Haym) Topol, an Israeli actor, but he just goes by Topol, and he did this same part on stage and obviously, in this film. You will probably know a handful of songs from this movie, and if you don't, you will afterwards because they are that good. You will never forget them. You'll want to get T in on it too, if you can👍😉😊.

I'm a little older. During the 50s and 60s, it seems there were many more musicals than today, though are some great musicals today. But, in 1964 the beginning of my junior year in high school, a musical was released that grabbed me so hard that I would go to the library and check out the sound track. The musical was My Fair Lady starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. I had seen Westside Story and The Music Man and Oklahoma, which were and are great musicals, but something about the songs in My Fair Lady held my attention. In this time, Netflix put out a Christmas movie in 2020 which is a musical that I have watched last Christmas and now this year as well. It has powerhouse songs, singers and dancers and one of my favorite actor Forrest Whitaker. It also has that magic that Disney used have when Walt Disney was running his company. That musical is "Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey".

Definitely, you should react to or just see this movie. It is a great movie with a lot of really nice music. Although, the story centers around Jewish people in Tzarist Russia dealing with poverty, persecution and modern ways of the younger generation against traditions, the theme is so universal that the Broadway play(which preceded the movie) has been translated in dozens of languages and shown in many countries. Two of my favorite songs are Matchmaker, Matchmaker and Sunrise, Sunset which is a real tear jerker where the father , at his daughter's wedding, reminisces about her growing up. I just love your reactions, Tasha. You are my favorite reactor of all. You are so sweet, perceptive and ADORABLE!
