Without Peter Criss, as much as Paul and Gene trash him now, arguably Kiss would’ve never hit the heights they did. Without Peter, no Beth. No Beth, possibly no full peak for Kiss in the 70’s as it was their biggest hit. Also, Peter’s Rod Stewart rasp is such a signature Kiss sound. Tunes like Strange Ways, Baby Driver, Hard Luck Woman shined so much because Pete could deliver on vocals.
@chrisoakley58303 жыл бұрын

Great reaction. KISS members all have distinct characteristics as vocalists. Paul with the soaring melodic style, Gene with his gruffness, Peter with his raspy voice and Ace has kind of a reedy talking style. They’re all easily distinguishable from each other, just like their different stage performing styles. Gene is kind of a lumbering menace, Paul is an athletic poser, Ace is a wobbling staggerer and Peter is a fast punching street fighter. All this makes for a great band. Those qualities are more or less unchanged after all these years, despite the lineup changes. That’s why I’ve seen them thirty times.

We all know why Ace was the wobbling staggerer. Apparently Ace was well known for his lack of balance (not always chemically induced), especially early on. I guess when he added the huge boots it got even worse. Ace claims when he'd fall during shows, Gene and Paul would run over and play over him (ala Black Diamond) like the whole thing was planned.

I think this concert was from late 1975/early 1976... the original Kiss in their prime 🔥🤩🤘 before the drugs, alcohol & egos wrecked them. This song was written for their first album in 1974 by Paul Stanley - it was about New York City call girls who used a cheap makeup brand called 'Black Diamond'... Peter Criss (drums) sang lead, cos he had a bluesy vocal delivery that fit the song. Both Paul & Gene grew up on 50's and 60's R&B and rock n' roll... so those influences were big in Kiss' music. Peter Criss also surprised everyone in 1976 by writing and singing a piano ballad called 'Beth' ... it shocked critics by charting in the top 10 and becoming Kiss' biggest hit single. Criss was influenced by jazz and big band music, so that was what he brought to Kiss. When he was fired in 1980, it changed the band quite a bit... Peter Criss' health and drum skills were compromised by his addictions by 1979 to the point he was unable to play in the studio, and in concert... But in Kiss' early days, Criss was literally the 'catman' on the drums.

If you haven't heard one that Ace sings, but want to, Shock Me or New York Groove are good starts, as well as 2000 Man or Into The Void. Peter sings this, Beth, Hard Luck Woman and Nothing to Lose. There is no album version of this song. The best version imo is the Kiss Alive IV version with the Symphony Orchestra behind it. Today with the subs in for Peter and Ace they are great musicians but nothing can touch the original members.
