I lived in BJ when I went to uchicago and you are spot on about the insular culture there. I was lucky that I had my best friends in the house but knew people who really struggled with that culture too. Once I moved off campus, I actually lived with a friend from study abroad which was a good break. Great video!

Just a question, if you are looking for a best of both worlds situation, like have that tight-knit community as well as the access to larger communities, which would be the best? Snell and Hitchcock because of its proximity to everything else maybe? Or is there something else better entirely

Hi! I was accepted into UChicago and was looking at housing but heard that the dorm assignments are random. Is there any way to guarantee a specific house?

Hey! Congratulations on the acceptance. :) I believe you can preference your dorms and even the name of your roommate, but you can't preference which House you want to be in within the dorm. But this is based what what happened years ago when I got in, it may have changed. I'd recommend emailing [e-mail] to ask. :)

I was a graduate student and was bullied at Uni and in the “dorms” to a point I attempted s..cide. The University of Chicago covered up bullying supporting my bullies which left me with a student loan and trying to end up everything as my only solution… They lied, tried to create false mental health reasons and so on. I have now no other solution and I bet no one wants to end up in my situation.

Snell-Hitchcock is the best dorm! (Coming from someone who lived in Hitchcock for all 4 years of their undergraduate career; who was a house ghost for the first two years, and then who found the close-knit culture nice to have as a backdrop during the latter two years)

You are so correct with paralleling Snitchcock with “a quaint town.” The culture has definitely become more flexible over the years, but I remember having to endure being asked “hey, why don’t you hang out with housemates more?” when I spent all my time with friends at South and Max P.

That's awesome - I completely feel that about the close-knit culture, I think that there are certainly some dorms/houses that have it whereas in Max P/South/North it kind of depends on more factors. And yes haha I was definitely proud of that parallel I drew 😂 I feel like it holds true in the best light for the dorms that are generally smaller!

@@TheAlmostAstrophysicist I was raised in a small town in rural Massachusetts, so perhaps Snitchcock (and other smaller dorms) might be good for people to live in if they are coming from a small town and are wary about their transition to a city.

Woodlawn is fine, since everything's new the facilities are very nice and the dining hall is right there too which is always a plus, or you can always go to the south dining hall which is right there. The distance is a very annoying factor but during COVID times it's not like any of us are going out and about anyway haha. Outside of these times though it definitely would be a minus. No real house culture for obvious reasons. Idk, I definitely wouldn't have chosen it if I could but I definitely do not think it's the worse dorm and it's overall alright, gets the job done.

Hi! It depends on which dorm you're in! I've only had to share with my roommate before but it wasn't communal, we had a bathroom for the two of us (both when I was at Stony Island and Max P)!

Hey! i'm going to be an exchange student studying in u chicago for the fall-spring ! Do you recommend getting an apartment near U chicago (ex. Vue) or around south loop/downtown??

Hi!! Ooo sounds fun, hope you enjoy campus! I'd 100% recommend staying in an apartment in Hyde Park near UChicago and not living downtown. If you're studying on campus/want to go to campus activities that are after classes/in the evening, you want to be close to campus. :) Vue is an option but there's always UChicago students leaving campus for a whole quarter at a time for study abroads so someone might be subletting their place (usually sublets are WAY cheaper than Vue) so that could be an option (there should be a uchicago housing group on facebook with sublet info there)! If housing is covered though, Vue is a super cool option near campus, just a little pricey!

so is getting meal plan required? because i was thinking that going grocery shopping would be cheaper.

Yup it's required if you live in the dorms (or at least was when I was on campus. I'm pretty confident it's still a requirement). Grocery shopping is 1000% cheaper lol, BUT one thing to consider is that your financial aid package could actually cover the meal plan. Either way, would recommend getting off campus the moment you're allowed to (your third year) because rent + food is much cheaper. :)

Can you live in an apartment style dorm as a freshmen ?

They used to have a lot of apartment-style dorms in the satellite dorms that they closed down! But for the current dorm options, I don't think it's easy for a freshman to be given an apartment. I know North/South/etc. have suites, but it's usually second-years or third-years who get it! You may get lucky though. :) I'm not sure how it works for Woodlawn.

Great question - yes you can! Most people put in a request or go to the housing lottery (which is on a specific day each year) or through the uchicago housing portal online to change dorms for the next academic year. If you want to change dorms during the academic year, that's also possible but that's a special request!

I'm still in high school but I got a letter from Uchigaco and I wanted to do some research on it. Im already set on Hiram college since it's a good college and it's close enough to drive back home on weekends but im trying to keep my options open just incase. Picking colleges is pretty hard🥲
