Maybe it’s just a me thing, but in 40K last stands always seem to be massive groups of people. Maybe it’s just the nature of the setting as a Wargame, but the first thing I think of is the Fall of Cadia and the Guard going down with it, or the Crimson Fists fighting as one. At least in my reading, rarely do we get something personal, one man throwing himself into the void knowing this is what must be done and he is the only one around to do it. Dantioch gives us just that, and a rare example of genuine friendship between people who by all accounts should hate each other with himself and Alexus to top it all off. Truly, the only thing that shined brighter than his spirit and defiance was not the Pharos, but his Dantiochussy. Shame about the Tyranids coming around cuz of the Pharos too, ain’t it?

First read about Dantioch in Peturabo's book, read first hand why he was pissed at Perturabo for being needlessly wasteful. First read about Pollux in Rynn's World, read first hand about him being an Imperial Fist. Continued to read. Read how Dantioch was so competent at fortifications he defended a fortress for months on end and proceeded to humiliate countless traitors. Read how Pollux was so competent he nearly broke an entire traitor fleet. Continued to read. They met each other and went from antagonism to a genuine friendship. "Pollux has left a legacy that has created one of the most revered and benevolent chapters of all time." Depending on what you believe, so did Dantioch. Its theorized that the Silver Skulls are a Chapter made up of his remaining Loyalist Iron Warriors. If not, they probably use their Geneseed atleast.
@collecter3432 жыл бұрын
@@Jsay18 Definitely headcanon that the Silver Skulls were actually founded by Loyalist IW, it's just recorded as Ultramarines to smooth things over when people ask.
@thewerdna2 жыл бұрын
@@collecter343 this is supported by a short story in which an Inquisitor discovered some secret about the Silver Skulls founding, but since they were a loyal chapter just gave the info to the chapter master and another captain for them to decide. The Skulls were highly disturbed about what they found out and decided the rest of the chapter and the imperium could never know. Being decendants of a traitor legion (even if from loyal members) is probably something that would fit that reaction.

@@Jsay18 also the 40k Minotaurs chapter are secretly Iron Warriors who stayed loyal during the Heresy. Though in their case I believe it was actually more of a case of a fleet of Iron Warriors crusading at the edge of the galaxy who returned home to find they had missed the several year Heresy.

Just one family.. It genuinely touched me, hearing that story, in those words, said that way.. Their example lived on past them.. Their legacy was assured in moments like that!!.. Dantioch did something that is near impossible: make an imperial fist cry. Truly a magnificent moment between those two. To see what could have been between Perturabo and Rogal Dorn through these two is...incredibly touching. Pollux suffered greatly at his brother's lost considering him, a fist, crying then treat someone's corpse with such respect despite the hatred from the horus heresy. Makes me wanna cry alongside Pollux maaan ;-; I'm glad GW allowed these two to be written in this way. I don't know of any other bond between two characters in 40k has touched me in this way. Kharn and Argel Tal come close, but something about two characters that are *meant* to hate, maim, kill, and pass down all of this to their successors after the Heresy becoming friends then brothers is quite wholesome. In a 40k way.

Shame the beacon exploding accidentally signaled the nids. Wonder if that's what Dantioch saw and was like "oh fuck" Also fun fact: the Silver Skulls are heavily implied to actually be Iron Warriors successors, likely founded by the few surviving members of Dantioch's men, but were labeled a Ultramarine successor since they were basically considered honorary Ultramarines at that point.

And the Scythes of the Emperor, it's implied they have Dantioch's helmet as a relic.

@niedowład The crazy thing is, this isn't uncommon. There were modern traitors that after 10,000 years, got tired of the alpha legion sh*t towards them, and flipped back to the imperium. That's what makes the iron warriors interesting, because it shows the most genuine promise of redemption, and even sees actual defection and redemption even in 40k. So the silver skulls, could easily be iron warriors or ultramarines who are trained by iron warriors. Both are perfectly viable. Since the geneseed was never the problem. Heck I think if perty was still human and given a chance of redemption he might've taken it too. Since his sons seem to jump at that chance.
