The AGS was never the same after Howard McNear left the show. Emmet was scarcely a replacement for Floyd. Thanks for the video, Bob!

Emmett was a bland character I was not fond of him.
@ProfessorEchoMedia4 күн бұрын
Emmet was saddled with too much pride and too little intelligence to be a likable character and his constant bickering with Goober and Howard became tiresome. Plus he often treated his wife like crap.

Andy and Don would often say how hard it was to get through scenes without laughing at Howard's various line readings and scene interpretations over and over again.. "Win with Taylor!" is one of his all time funniest bits and you can see Andy and Don both trying to suppress laughing.

Floyd is really the only character that survives with his original character intact from the first five seasons to the first two color seasons. Just about everyone else undergoes some undesirable changes between the two incarnations of the series, but Floyd remains a constant source of reliable and consistent amusement throughout. In other words, outside of Helen's cute short haircut and some great comic timing between Andy and Opie, Floyd remains about the only valid reason for watching the seasons without Barney.

That was good. But I still prefer the shorter videos. He played a doctor in the Jimmy Stewart movie Anatomy of a Murder. One episode of I Love Lucy had him getting very nervous before Little Ricky's performance. Guess who ended up subbing on ukulele. Floyd added a lot to the show. This was an instance of recasting making a positive difference. But I know from experience that a barber shop can change hands to someone with the same name. Eugene Levy played him in a Godfather sketch on SCTV.

@tomodonovan5931 That Twilight Zone he did was a comedic episode and one of the best comedies of the series.He did the radio version of Gunsmoke,if he was in the television show I never saw that one.Thise Elvis movies were mostly comedies, especially in the '60's.Thecobly dramas he did I'm familiar with were on radio.

@@David-yw2lv True. I can't remember if he was on a Perry Mason episode. I keep seeing him in my mind in a courtroom. But he was capable of being in a dramatic show. He probably felt more comfortable doing comedy. Could you see Bob Denver doing a serious role, or Alvy Moore doing a serious role. We were so used to seeing them as zany characters on Green Acres, and Gilligan's Island. I always thought Robin Williams was the best comedy, serious actor in Hollywood. He could be Mork, or he could be a shrink on Good Will Hunting.
@David-yw2lv4 күн бұрын
@tomodonovan5931 Alvy Moore has done many dramatic roles.He was in the occult horror film The Witchmaker and in Time to Run,a religious themed movie made by Billy Graham.He had a bit role in the science fiction classic The War of the Worlds made in 1953.Bob Denver guested in a dramatic role on Dr Kildare.I once heard Tim Conway declined dramatic roles but I don't know if it's true.Most actors have done both drama and comedy.Frank Nelson and Gale Gordon did dramatic radio shows,Gordon played Flash Gordon on the radio However, I never have seen or heard of any dramatic roles for either in movies or television.

Losing the big 5. Gomer Pyle, Barney Fife, Thelma Lou, Floyd the Barber, and Otis Campbell. The show lost all credibility, and so much harder to write for. The substance was lost, and not even Andy, Aunt Bee, or Opie could save it. Wished they would have brought Jerry Van Dyke back as a character, or Malcolm Merriweather, or maybe Jack Prince. The Andy Griffith show had options.
@ProfessorEchoMedia4 күн бұрын
That's exactly right, but the main crux of the problem was that the color seasons were mostly done by all new writers who did not work on the Barney seasons. This rendered a lot of changes that slowly sank the show such as Andy being grumpy so much of the time and Goober going from a simpleton to mentally challenged. The focal points of all the characters changed for the worst and suddenly only Floyd was left with most of his character's dignity intact and it was very sad he had to leave the show due to poor health.

@@ProfessorEchoMedia Imagine being a writer back then. You had many, many restrictions. Vietnam, sex, religion. Unlike today, the subjects are unlimited. You or I could have written better scripts. But the censors would have rejected most of our writing, that is, if it was controversial. Ed Sullivan and his beef with the Doors. You could not say one little word in the media. Today, you hear everything.
@ProfessorEchoMedia3 күн бұрын
@@tomodonovan5931 I don't disagree with that, but the first five seasons of the series proved they could sustain an excellent show without writing about current events or fads or trends. This was what really went missing when all the writers changed during the color seasons, they either ran out of ideas like you intimate, or they had their hands tied too often with regards to subject matter. Or they just weren't very good writers compared to those who worked on the show the first five seasons.
