Glad you enjoyed my Baltic porter! I’m not sure the all grain smoked starter was worth it, but it was a fun experiment.
@Sleeeeepy_D8 ай бұрын
I’ve heard of people making a full on smoke beer and then putting a new beer on the yeast cake to get a more subtle smoke character but I hadn’t heard of the smoke malt started, definitely interesting!
@Eagle1846ytown8 ай бұрын
I actually got my inspiration from Schlenkerla brewery in Bamberg. They do that with their smoked Helles. I think a smoked malt starter would work really well on a pale lager. I might try it eventually.
@TheApartmentBrewer8 ай бұрын
It was excellent!! A great concept and not overly smoky. I'm not a huge fan of full on rauchbiers but this was a tasteful (and tasty) execution of limited smoke. Plus the base Baltic porter was delicious!

@@Eagle1846ytownwould you mind share the recepie if thats okay? I am trying to do something similar and dont know how much smoke grain to use. I want it to be party of all flavours with noticable smoke but not overshadowing other chocolate, roasty malty notes.

I might be coming late to this, I didn't realize there was a "debate.". My understanding is that a Cold IPA can use ale yeast or lager yeast, as long as they're relatively clean. A Cold IPAs main job is to highlight the dry hop flavor by thinning and drying the body using malt adjuncts. In contrast, an IPL must use lager yeast and might not have any dry hop additions and is unlikely to have adjuncts like corn or rice. I remember reading an article with the brewer from Wayfinder who used this rough explanation. In my head, a Cold IPA is a crisp version of a Hazy IPA but with a different malt bill. A IPL is a catch all for older school IPAs that used lager yeast.

As a result, I was invited to come in and Brew on their 10BBL system. What a TREAT! and as Tree House says, it is about making memories. Every time I homebrew what I helped brew on the 10BBL system, I go back to that day's memories.

This is great. I had the opportunity to brew with the guys at Browns Brewing in Troy NY. A buddy of mine won a Fun Day Brew Day raffle and invited me. They brew one of our recipes. A Barleywine. It was a long day and it made me realize that big scale brewing is for young guys. We had a hand in every part of it though. From crushing the grains to tasting from the fermenter every two weeks until it was ready to serve.
