The misunderstand of back swing move ,especially “the hip turn” used to hurt my back . And it caused loosen the power from the hip but stress on lower back . Now I understand that how Jason Day ‘s bad feeling effect his backmuscle. I used to think and practice by experiment like this some time with hesitation . But some words of this lesson “we are feeling this sensation of sinking into the pelvis “ brightened up my eyes and nailed this paradigm.Your explanation has Fix my Faults in hip turn .I’m glad to founded this lesson by The Art of Simple Golf.Thank you very much from Thailand .ขอบคุณมาก จาก ประเทศไทย

I completely agree. I played a poor round the other day and on introspection as to why I swung poorly I realised exactly what your talking about. I was too stiff in the knees and as a result a poor hip turn. So your video is great reinforcement to what I believe my problem was.

Your in-depth of the golf swing really is an eye opener Alex, you are miles ahead of the other coaches on you tube! But the drill with the wall - I would advise your viewers not to have a golf club in their grasp when doing this drill, as one can end up with to steep a backswing - resulting in them chopping down on the ball on their follow through! I am a pensioner and I have a shorter back swing now, but I am hitting the ball longer/further now due to me having 60% of my weight on my left foot (right handed golfer) I imaging myself/swinging/opening like a spring gate which opens and shuts repeatedly and fits back into it's latch! Yeah the pelvis has a lot to do with my swing, I will try this drill out as I think I might be standing to tall at my set up! Thanks Alex - AGAIN!

I’m so sorry I didn’t see this Alan! Well said and yes, the wall like many other aspects in golf is balance. Like a tightrope walker tipping one way so has to compensate … then tips too far so corrects by tipping back more.. Keep at it pal!

I was taught the “X factor” thing in the late 90s/early 00s when I was a kid. Now that I’m older(don’t play as much and weigh a bit more) I find it more difficult to make a full turn and reach the “correct” top of my swing. I just looked at a recent video and my back leg/knee has basically no movement. This really helped. Excited to test it out.

Great explanation, what your describing is a " hip hinge" not a squat. The glutes move back, not towards the floor. That hinge lets me rotate or spiral from the ground up. For years i had a restricted flat rotation on the way to the top.

Your videos have been exceptionally helpful. When I first started I had some lessons and instantly lost the natural feeling of a golf swing. I was like I had lost the ability to swing, I was trying to act out or trace what I had been taught and the results were awful. Your videos have helped me find my own golf swing again and given me the pointers to take it further so thank you!

I’m close to my 72nd birthday and with your advice about the pelvis sitting down in the backswing I successfully engaged the core (lower stomach, groin, and upper legs) and found my drive on the eighth hole at Dyker Beach GC to be 54 yards from the flag. The eighth hole is 354 yards from the white tee. The pin was in the back, about ten feet from the back fringe.

Thanks! My lower body movement has been inconsistent for a long time so look forward to trying this on the range soon. One of my problems is getting the weight back to my left side and I can see where this might be a good solution. Another area it will help me is that I feel like my shoulders are too flat....I want my left shoulder lower than the right and that isn't happening right now. Extending the right hip up should allow my left shoulder to more easily get lower than my right. Thanks again.

@@TheArtofSimpleGolf Tried that for a couple range sessions and it worked well. Didn't video tape it so not sure if the left shoulder is getting lower or not.....feels like it. One additional benefit to raising both the hip and shoulder for me is that I feel like I sway back less if at all (major problem prior). I looked up a few of your other videos and enjoyed those as well. Thanks!

Arnold Palmer talked about pointing the left shoulder towards the ball. Bringing the pelvis down ensures that to create the backswing, that the left shoulder has to point towards the ball. Another critical concern is emphasizing the need to keep the upper arms tightly against the upper chest. There’s a tendency to relax the need to keep the upper arms tightly against the chest with the longer clubs. There’s a real possibility of wrenching the back muscles if the arms aren’t tightly against the upper chest.
@TheArtofSimpleGolf
@TheArtofSimpleGolf 2 жыл бұрын
Yes but the concern with that is, it’s minutia and folks tend to get too forced and tense. But sounds like you have the right balance. ;)

Excellent video Alex on how to take the club back in the backswing! It looks like your motion causes the club to go up rather than around. In thinking this out, I find if one practices a split hand grip in taking the club back, the results will be the same. Or, am I wrong? I know that I get "too hippy" with my swing causing an over the top move and pulled shots. Always find your videos interesting and informative Alex! Keep up the good work!!

This should be something that comes up more in teaching….everybody talks about turning more but a bigger turn isn’t always a power gaining move if you lose the resistance! I’ve spent an age using online instruction to try to resolve an overly shallow move and have gotten into all sorts of inconsistencies as a result. Not one source mentioned too much hip turn. At the beginning of the video I watched to see when you started to move towards the target during the backswing. It seems to happen just as your left arm moves past parallel with the ground. The strong steady back leg then supports the leverage necessary in the completion of the backswing. Sometimes I haven’t been moving towards the target in the backswing and pull across my chest and hit a bad shot.

@DASH1ful

yes, i totally agree. we shouldn't restist with the right leg in the takeaway, etc. and, the right hip should rise etc. and, i agree that the pelvis should work in at address. but, we shouldn't actively work the pelvis in. we work the pelvis in by pressing back with the base of the neck, to get into the address position. this gives the pelvis and right leg more freedom in the backswing. also, at address, we should activate the muscles down the left side of the right leg. and, we can't really do this when we actively work the pelvis in. but, if you just stand in an upright position- no club- and activate the muscles in the left side of your right leg, slightly, you will find that your weight moves onto your right foot. but, if you continue to activate the muscles your weight will move onto your left foot. and, this is how the right leg works in the backswing. the key is to activate the muscles, down the left side of the right leg, to get the weight onto the right leg at address. and, it is, also, a good idea to cock the head to the side before putting both hands on the club, at address. and, then, when we do activate the muscle down the left side of the right leg, at address, it will actually cock the head a little bit further to the right. and, then, when we actively cock the head to the side, in the takeaway, it will actually move the right hip back and up, in the backswing. and, the leg works as a pivot preventing the head from cocking too far to the right. and it, also, directs force into the right side of the lower the back; which helps the body to turn.

Ben Hogan expressed admiration for 2 golfers in his life. One of them was Mr Austin. While people are in awe of Rory’s occasional 350 yard drives Mike regularly hit 375 to 400 yard drives. WITH PERSIMMON drivers and balata balls. 😂

@@TheArtofSimpleGolf yes!! I’ve went back now and watch as much as possible. I just shot a 93 on a course that’s a little over 6,800. Only been golfing 6 months. Your videos have helped so much thank you.

Most of the videos say you should turn your hips on the backswing at least 45° and the shoulders turn about 90° what you are saying is don't turn laterally or level your hips on the backswing but push the right hip back and sit I can see where there is less stress on the back is there any other difference between pushing back and rotating back to 45° I see possibly this can give more rotation of the hips on the downswing than the lateral move kindly advise thanks Jack

It depends if there is no strain and if you can get back to impact and through quick enough with more hip rotation on backswing

It looks like when you are pressing your pelvis down to touch the wall your weight is moving towards your heels. Is that the case?

right or wrong, i don't know, but i'm getting into that position and as i start my backswing i make sure my left knee (i'm a right player) gets behind the ball and my right leg is fully extended and then i push my right butt cheek back. Makes me getting into perfect position at the top every time and i don't get back pain.

@@TheArtofSimpleGolf hey I really liked that video you just posted about getting a little more extension in the spine at the top. Feels like that’s the link that connects the backswing and the downswing. That small move makes a big difference 👍🏼
