Love your stuff man. Some questions for you from the perspective of a new instructor.. 1.) What is the ideal role of tradition and formalities in regards to your students? How casual or formal do you like to be? What lines shouldn’t be crossed, if any? 2.) Is it ethical to teach privates from your home gym without compensating your parent gym? 3.) how might a beginner class be structured for a day 1 student with no BJJ knowledge whatsoever? 4.) how might you convince someone to give BJJ a try? Someone who is curious but is still hesitant and/or nervous 5.) any other practical advice for someone transitioning from student to teacher

How to drill and chain your techniques go watch Fabio Gurgel seminar that he did at Masters worlds I think 2017. It is the one he teaches situp guard and actions against opponents actions. At the end he speaks how to learn your jiujitsu.

Thanks so much for the great content! I have a few questions about sparring. I am a 49 year old white belt with about 10 lessons in. My brown belt instructor always says I need to relax, not resist so much. I get it, and I know that white belts are stereotypically over-agressive. However, if I am sparring with my instructor, with my super-limited skill set, a tight/aggressive response is my only way to avoid being choked or submitted. Also, shouldn't my brown belt instructor not be so eager to submit me the white belt? We drill and then I lose any and all chance to apply what I just learned. He immediately counters everything and never gives me the slightest inch. Is this normal/part of the game? Is my frustration warranted or just something I need to get over. Sorry for the ramble, but I am not sure if I should look for a new instructor. Good days always to you.

Hi Rick I’m a big fan brother! I’m a white belt and a blue belt my size I train with because we are near in size im 230 and he’s 275. I’m a US Army Vet and I’ve always lifted weights and played sports. I’m in good shape but my training partner crushes me with his size and weight. I’m always on the bottom getting crushed. I try to attack my it seems that he’s to large to fit in my triangle. We are both 5’10. Any advice? Old man to old man 😊

I want to challenge you on your answer of gi vs no gi. First, if all moves in no gi can be applied to gi but not vice versa than wouldn’t it be better to have gi for the rest of your life? Think about it - all no gi moves are a subset of gi moves so if you only have no gi moves, you won’t have all the missing moves only applicable to gi. Therefore, I would prefer gi for the rest of my life because I will have all the moves and still have the skills and techniques only applicable for no gi. For self defense, I would also gi is better. The gi mimicks our clothing. Our gi jacket is our jacket or hoodie. The collar chokes apply to a hoodie or even a shirt. Our gi pants is not much different than our jeans or sweat pants. For no gi, how often would you defend yourself without wearing a shirt and pants? Maybe at the beach? Gi is better in my opinion.

Gi vs No gi: Gi translates much better to an actual self defense situation. Everyone wears clothes in a fight. You shouldn't get spoiled with the control the gi gives you but at the same time you shouldn't get spoiled being able to just pull out of armbars and triangles just because you are strong and slippery. Put another way, I can take my Gi off and still be plenty dangerous. Put a gi on a badass no gi guy or wrestler and he can't move. This is provable and repeatable. Also look at it like this. All Gi guys also train no gi. We will roll 2-3 times with it and after a few minutes the gi comes off and we are rolling no gi. The same is not true for no gi guys. They never train in even somewhat realistic clothes. Also as a black belt you should know there are a lot of gi chokes that will work with a t-shirt.

I enjoyed your perspective here, However, I’d argue that realistically speaking, being on the defensive end of an armbar or triangle in a self-defense situation is very unlikely. Also, regular clothing is likely to rip, rendering any type of proxy-grip useless. Of course the best option is to train both, but I’d second Ricks point that all no-gi techniques work regardless of clothing (even a naked adversary). Furthermore, learning to control the levers of the body with no-gi grips and control positions will give you the greatest advantage in a real life altercation. Cheers, mate!

@@Freedom_Flow Train what you like. I've been training Jiu-Jitsu a good bit longer than Rick so this is simply my opinion based on that and my time as a cop and bouncer. Grappling in clothes changes things...dramatically. The other guy suddenly has handles you have never had to deal with before if all you train is No-gi. Also you aren't going to out wrestle a D-1 level guy but put a jacket or hoodie on him and most good purple belts could easily staple him to the ground or choke him out quickly. Its not just about you controlling him, its about how he can possibly control you and you haven't trained to get away. I'm not sure how many times you have tried to tear a quality hoodie or leather jacket but its not quite as easy as you make it out to be.
