Raya and the Last Dragon was a revolutionary movie, not just because it had a great score, cast, and animation. But what really made this movie special was that the movie was inspired by Southeast Asia. Revolutionary in the fact that it is the first major American movie, by a major American motion picture studio. At least one that’s not about martial arts or war.
The movie would also feature the first Southeast Asian lead character from Disney, as well as the first Southeast Asian Disney Princess. REPRESENTATION MATTERS!

@A. Sora Filipinos only mention what they are proud of, even in the explanation in this video there are too many things related to the Philippines. Though not necessarily the aspects that are said to originate or have a Philippine background. They don't even mention anything that comes from Indonesia, even though there are many Indonesian elements in the film Raya. It's ironic, they just want to boast about themselves. On the other side, they keep mentions "SEA Countries/Pride of SEA Country" but inside it sentences actually just a metafore.

In the movie, a couple of the tribes are headed by women. In South East Asia, the Minangkabau of Sumatera Indonesia and Negeri Sembilan Malaysia till today still practices Adat Perpatih which is a type of women/matrilineal system. Filipina here~! I teared up a little while watching this video and while watching Raya. I remember being obsessed with Moana and Polynesian culture and the far but somewhat similar cultural differences between Filipinos and Polynesians, hoping one day, I said to my best friend, I hope they make a Filipina Princess (technically Lea Salonga already has that honor, as a Disney Legend, lol)...But even if she wasn't Filipina, at least make a Princess that represents South East Asian nations.....and they totally did it! A little sad personally that there were no songs, as SE Asia has so many traditional sounds and music...it's a bit of a shame. I hope one day, there can really be a Kumandra-type of unity with less political strife amongst nations. There is so much we can learn and share from one another.

I have to be honest here, as a Filipino I'm happy to see that there's a film out there that is inspired by my South East Asian culture. I used 'inspired' rather than 'represented' because honestly the representation fell flat to me and that it only scratched the surface of how rich, diverse and beautiful SEA culture is. On the bright side, the animation was beautiful and this is a step to actually having SEA representation.
@resurgingflame
@resurgingflame 3 жыл бұрын
U really can't expect a 2 hour long movie to explore the culture of SEA even deeper to meet ur standards. That's so unrealistic & tasking the producer & director an impossible job to do. Esp since this movie isn't just based on 1 country & 1 culture like any other disney princesses movies. Let's give the credit where it's due. It's indeed a representation. They've done pretty well in doing that on top of processing other elements in producing this movie. If u want a deeper & better representation, u'd expect to find that in a series. Not a movie.

Despite the sometimes iffy dialogue and mostly East Asian cast rather Southeast Asians, my biggest problem personally was that the movie felt too short/too fast.The world building, ost and art designs are absolutely amazing just to be left untouched, it needs a page of Dreamworks on making a movie trilogy. Despite that I’m prideful as hell for the SEA representation.

@@lukelim5094 Personally, I don’t mind the acting, method actors pretend to do acting a different accent all the time, same with voice actors. Sure they did a “close enough” Asian cast but if it was whitewashed, people would be pissed rather than annoyed. Also it’s a Disney film which always put children first than adults and those kids would focus on visuals and animation instead. Frozen and AOT were *inspired* by their respective cultures but raya was hamfisted to the point that it became its whole identity, same with black panther that relied on its hype from their certain group of people.That in concept isn’t bad unless the film itself was lackluster in one aspect like the story which felt shallow and could’ve just made a longer film or not cramp so much in one movie.

But those are changing, and at least with internet, Southeast Asians are starting to be more integrated to each other. Sometimes even from the help of other cultures due to smiliar interests. You see, representing the entirety of SEA with one movie is hard. It's one of the most culturally diverse regions in the world. As an example, the delicacies you mentioned in this video is foreign to me, despite me being born a Southeast Asian and having lived here all my life. From the trailer and the footage I've seen, the setting is more inspired by the Indochinese area of the region, that would explain the world map and the lack of Islamic and Christian references. I don't mind it as a Filipino, but I'd feel bad for my Malaysian and Indonesian homies, when the movie is being marketed as a movie representing Southeast Asian cultures. I don't expect Disney to represent all of Southeast Asia in one movie, that would be impossible, the Philippines alone has 175 ethnolinguistic groups with their own cultures and beliefs. It's just that I don't want Disney to give Americans a flawed understanding of Southeast Asian cultures. I would understand why this is important for you as an Asian-American, but for me, this is just pandering to us Southeast Asians to watch more Disney movies. I'd be more interested in supporting our local animation industry in the hopes that it would grow to produce quality animated movies. We already have the animators, the only thing we lack here is direction.

To my limited knowledge, Malaysian and Indonesian myths and legends doesn't/rarely have Islamic influence/connection. All Disney movies are also void of any religious representation. For my personal opinion, this movie doesn't represent Southeast Asia authentically. It's using the western narrative slaps with elements from Southeast Asia. Southeast Asian legends always about a struggle to overcome enemies that seemed impossible or seeking vengeance with one's own strength and ingenuity and personal growth to do it and not a magical quest. Just my opinion though. We don't have to agree.

As a third generation Asian American, it was sad that I barely knew anything about my Laotian/Cambodian background. Heck I didn’t even know the difference between the different types of Asians till I was like 12. I remember being asked in 1st grade by my counselor when I was very quiet what kind of Asian I was If I was Chinese, Japanese (hehe), Korean, etc. I never knew the difference so I just pointed at Laos on a map as a random (lucky) guess. She was intrigued and asked stuffed about it. Not knowing crap I just said “uhhhhh” for like a minute. I was put into this foreign class to learn English (my first language that I knew VERY well) instead of the actual English class. I’ve been confused why I had to do it and now I think “huh, this school thought I couldn’t speak English well”. I’m now trying to learn everything about who I am and my history from how to speak the language (I can not get past the basic number, greetings and food 😅) to traditions I’ve seen my grandparents do that they’ve tried to teach me

@@adrianso7435 Do you hear the southeast asian accent in the movies? What is the point of being that specific? Asian American is a special breed from old world asian. If you want to hear Indonesian, malaysian, or insert whatever. Then watch when that movie got translate into that country and dub by the natives. Which probably already is. So what the point?

I love the South East Asian representation, when people in the west say Asian they always think of the East Asian countries e.i China, Japan, Korea it’s nice to see your culture represented in meaningful ways
