Lots of people ask is ADD on the spectrum, is this autism. And there is lots of misinformation around.
Autism and ADHD are not the same thing but they are related. They are both learning disabilities and just like autism ADHD and stimming can occur.
More often a person is diagnosed with autism and ADHD. Which also shows how ASD and anxiety is present also when you have autism and ADHD diagnosis.
Both Autism and ADHD are neurodevelopment conditions and are closely linked but are not the same diagnosis.
A person can be diagnosed with just Autism or a person can be diagnosed with just ADHD.
What is your current diagnosis and do you have ADHD?

The Dopamine hit chasing is down to 2 terms - An ADHD brain doesn't have enough Tonic Dopaminge, so our brains produce a much higher Phasic Dopamine response...(I wont bother to explain the meanings because I can be sure that you'll look into it if you don't already know) 😊 I'm not 100% sure if this is accurate but I feel that Tonic and Phasic Dopamine could possibly be yhe reason behind why I've struggled to hold down jobs for very long when I've not been medicated. At first I'm having the most amazing time in a new job and feel so damn happy, confident and proud of myself, but then a month or 2 goes by and I'm finding myself in a constant battle with the voice inside my head that is uncontrollably throwing the darkest and most argumentative thoughts about different ways that I can hurt myself, just so I can get away from that place of work! It makes me feel like such a different person because I never usually have these kinds of thoughts (even on comedowns from drug binges, I can usually somewhat put that voice to sleep) ...i'm normally quite a happy and bubbly person who will go so far out of my way to help another person with a big smile to greet them with...and since I've had medication that releases and promotes the reuptake of Dopamine and Norepinephrine I feel like I've been given my life back. I've held down a job that I regularly attend and thoroughly enjoy for almost 3 months aswell as taking a course in Child Safeguarding and also helping to care for my mum who is currently in a wheelchair. Each and every day I wake up feeling excited about the day ahead of me and cannot wait to make it productive, to the point that last night I struggled to get into an Xbox game that I'd been wanting to play for months because I felt unproductive! Anyway I do apologise for the rambled essay of a comment...I kinda got on one a little bit and could so easily have gone much further and more rambly, but I feel that ive got my point across! 🙈🤣

I’ve seen people online claiming ADHD is on the spectrum. It is not that simple. They are distinct conditions that look similar.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 4 ай бұрын
@@TheOfficial_YoItSJaKe4091 It gets confusing because the working group that decides where to draw the lines was lazy. ADHD isn't ASD. There shouldn't be an autism spectrum disorder as such, the word spectrum in there is just plain confusing. Compare that with the schizophrenia spectrum that includes multiple diagnoses and you'll see what I mean, ASD is just an undifferentiated mess of people that likely have different, but closely related conditions lump together with little to help people make sense of what to expect from the diagnosis. That being said, there's not much less justification for ADHD being on the broader autism spectrum than Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder, Schizoid Personality Disorder and OCD, to name a few. All of those disorders involve neurodevelopmental conditions affecting executive functioning. It's particularly egregious with ScPD not being included in the spectrum when it's mostly AS that's not readily apparent until later on. The non-autistic schizoids mostly got moved to either schizotypal personality disorder or avoidant personality disorder years ago, leaving mostly misdiagnosed autistic people that don't really have a psychological disorder left. And it barely made the DSM 5, would have been cut from the DSM 6 and likely will be cut from future ICD revisions; leaving those with the diagnosis currently with nothing at all, so no support if requested and no research either.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 4 ай бұрын
@@TheOfficial_YoItSJaKe4091 It's not simple, but one of the issues is that the term autism has been used to mean different things over the years and at this point, it's become common in the diagnostic criteria to use it in place of what used to be pervasive developmental disability. Not a great name, but it's part of how you get some of these satellite conditions being sort of spectrumy, but not what we now consider to be "on the spectrum." Even though, further research may lead to them being added later on.

There are some insurances that cover it depending on where you live and what tier level of insurance you get. For example I have Florida Blue and I just recently got diagnosed with ADHD and have had 0 cost in regards to the visits, not even a co pay. Granted though, I did have to pay for the NeuroPsychological Assessment which was $200, but that isn’t necessary for a diagnosis in all cases. I hope you find the answers you are looking for and good luck.

Both! I hyperfocus on tasks. It takes me quite a bit longer to craft an email or message, takes me longer to process information and understand the full list of expectations. I don't do well in the spotlight and do not like a lot of attention. I have meltdowns if I overdue it socially and don't get adequate rest. It's really become a roadblock in my work life and relationships, hence the late diagnosis.

I dont have a diagnosis but ive struggled with lots of things (basically just daily life) since late teens. Ive had diagnosis and treatments for anxiety and depression, but none of those worked and i never really felt like what they were saying described what was going on inside me. I stopped going to the doctor. Then a few years ago I heard one guy on here talking about his autism and for the first time in my life i heard some of the things i was feeling/experiencing put into words. It was amazing. I looked more into it and discovered many of my other little "quirks", which i never gave a second thought to, were common autism stims and traits. Putting it all together painted a very different, and quite clear picture. I also found out that autism can run in families, which adds up as my younger sister (10yrs younger) was diagnosed with Asperger's and OCD when she was 10y/o, and her son was diagnosed on the spectrum when he was just 2 y/o. I finally though i had a full answer. Whilst finding out about autism I kept hearing add being mentioned, but i didnt pay it any attention. Then recently, i accidentally started listening to a doctor talking about adhd and it was the same again - or the first time in my life i heard the things that have actually been causing me problems, the things I really struggle with, put into words. So, now I'm at the point where I'm sure these are the things that I'm dealing with, not anxiety and depression. But ive not managed to do anything about it and tbh I dont even know what i should do.

Quite possibly. The only reason that I'm trying for a 3rd attempt at diagnosis is that I had a lot of very scary, and wrong, diagnoses in my file from the early to mid-90s and having a proper diagnosis should stop all that BS based on old diagnoses. Other than that, probably the only real benefit is that if you do change jobs or life changes and the traits come out more strongly, you've got a legal right to accommodations that likely only comes with a diagnosis. I was doing "fine" until I was 42, but over the last year, I've come to realize that it's been there all along and there is no such thing as "spectrum adjacent" as I had thought of it, and furthermore that I should have had an AS diagnosis and would already have it if not for the schizo spectrum diagnoses that I had in my file.

@@Bumcakes_igotem Schizophrenia is the only one of the schizophrenia spectrum disorders that I haven't had anybody try to stick on me. The only reason for that is that I've got too many issues with mood for it to be that. It's pretty common and if you go by symptoms, schizoid personality disorder is arguably just AS where the person functions well enough to not need much help and has severe alexithymia. In my case,I'm more or less what you can consider semi-diagnosed. The first evaluation would have definitely come back AS, but I needed to get reevaluated for those other conditions. In retrospect, the way she went from communicating to me normally to being extremely blunt and direct probably should have been an indication that I'm definitely AS, but she couldn't say so without putting it in my file. And she couldn't put it in my file because I had these blocking diagnoses. Admittedly, at the time, I didn't bother because there wasn't much to be gained and I wasn't expecting the DSM 5 to wreck the diagnosis.

Im diagnosed Asperger's, as a child i could spend hours getting lost in art or taking things to pieces and fixing them. I don't want to self diagnose but im thinking that i may be ADHD, my mind has always been going a million miles an hour and it is exhausting which leads me to crash and need to sleep as i can no longer focus and at it's worst string words together to talk. I was told by the specialist i was seeing that Asperger's doesn't come on its own and have also diagnosed dyslexia. As I've got older and due to injuries i now have even more trouble focusing due to being in pain, this has not helped my depression as working with my hands kept me sane and in the moment, it's also made it hard to hold a job which doesn't help. After a life time of confusion and abuse your vids help me to understand myself and not feel so isolated.👍

Excellent video full of helpful information! I have ADHD only and my 9 year old daughter is autistic. So far she does not have a diagnosis of ADHD but I have a feeling she will in the future because like you said if you are autistic you will most likely have ADHD. My daughter is adopted and while I find me having ADHD incredibly agitating and difficult, it has been wonderful to be able to connect with my daughter and understand a little more of what she is going through. I still have a lot to learn about autism and how to help her, but I feel having ADHD myself it makes it a little more easier to understand. I am not hyperactive physically but my brain goes a mile a minute as does my crafting addiction! sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet, wood working, carving, embroidery.... and on and on.. haha! that is where I get my dopamine. :)

Wonderful discussion points Dan, as a fellow AuDHDer/Neuroscientist-in-training I deeply resound with that both struggle with task focus/switching, but the need to be multitasking to actually get through the task. For me personally, I'll often need music or background stimuli to keep my thoughts (or body) from wandering about too much (I stress music here mostly due to my chromesthesia and could be considered stimming), not always fool proof, but have found that it helps to some degree with associative learning i.e. every topic has a theme song. It's a great point to recognize that one can experience hyperactivity both internally and externally, when they ask if you feel like "you are driven by a motor", this could at an individual level be a mind that never stops thinking, or a body that can't stop fidgeting. On subject of co-morbid diagnosis, I agree with the idea of ADHD being a part of the autism spectrum, but not all autistic individuals may present with ADHD. I suppose the point of contention really falls in to what becomes clinically significant for the individual, so while someone with ADHD could be considered autistic, they may not meet the requirements for what is then considered disorder. It's a bit of a minefield of semantics and lexical rigidity probably driven by our innate need to classify things, but may suggest that either we find a better word for it, or that we need to recognize that words can have multiple meanings, and that meaning can and will change over time.

Confirmed ASD a very long time ago, assuming ADHD as well but that's also what I will be leaving it at. One simple yet effective life hack I've figured out is to, in my ever-present struggle between order (that which I crave) and chaos (that which I live), use my chaotic energy in such a way that it brings me closer to achieving order. As in, most things I'm doing on any day serve the purpose of making me feel better (and eventually happy) not just in the moment but in the long term. I can only speak for myself and not for others, but it's fascinating how easy it can be to deal with unhealthy addiction when having this mindset.

My adult daughter has been diagnosed with ADHD, but it affects her thoughts not her physical behavior. I have realized late in life in my 60s that I have many ASD and OCD traits and lifelong signs as a high functioning autistic person and have scored high on several online tests for ASD as well. I suspect my daughter may also be on the spectrum, although she has not been officially evaluated. We live in the US where testing for ASD is very expensive and seems difficult to obtain for adults.

ADHD and Autistic both (I was thinking my ADD was more of the inattentive type, but now I am not so sure. I DO have "hamster brain."). The older I get, the more I am finding out that meltdowns are not healthy for me (I can break bones pounding my fists on a granite breakfast bar, my heart rate goes up the longer I cry, etc), SO.... I decided to use my ADD as a strength to distract myself from a meltdown. If I feel one coming on, if I feel the frustration building (slow or malfunctioning laptop will do it, for sure), I lean into the ADD and let myself be distracted. I leave the area of frustration and go do something else. By the time I come back, either the problem has resolved itself, or my computer-saavy hubby has come home, and can help with the problem. Very interesting video, as always. Thanks!

I find I hyperfocus on some things, but have trouble focusing for long periods, which sees me switching from one hyper focus activity/interest to another regularly. Have struggled with alcohol for most of my adult life, and have problems with sugar & energy drinks too. Trying to reduce these, but find its two steps forward, one step back, with regular full relapses.

Very bright points there, TAW! One point you didn’t mention adding to the confusion between these disorders is that executive functioning, specifically Cognitive Inflexibility around routines or, more confusingly, their own beliefs and ideas, is a core diagnostic criterion for Autism’s Restricted Repetitive Behaviors. However, it has been apparent that a subset of people with ADHD, also due to executive functioning deficits, despite having fluctuating topics of focus and interest, will have inflexibility around their own ideas and beliefs as well, though it may not be as ‘strong’ as in people with Autism. If this trait exists in a person in relation to Autism or ADHD’s criteria, it is technically possible to identify differences if the core characteristics of the conditions affect the individual in conjunction with the inflexibility (ex: Difficulty focusing in ADHD due to homework or any unwanted activity may cause stickiness in thinking and willingness to complete the task) and this example can be related to Autism too, usually in the realm of different tasks from their own interests, or even occur at the same time, but it is minimally a cause of ADHD’s requirements regardless of additional feats of symptoms. I have Autism Spectrum Disorder with High Anxiety, and I REALLY exhibited inflexibility around routines in my Senior year of HS, due to the anxiety/Autism working together. This can be mistaken for ADHD in some circumstances if the stuck thoughts and unwillingness is present, but routines are almost always Autism-specific when compared to ADHD. ADHD people typically crave change, so to speak.

For example, I find it difficult to sit on a chair and just listen to a lecturer. I was told I have ADD because of concentration issues (it is really annoying when it happens) but because of my difficulty to sit still for periods of time I thought it might be ADHD instead. You said both ADD and ADHD are now regarded as pretty much the same. It looks like that is the answer for me.

I'm not sure when professionals realized that there's an executive function aspect to OCD, but I realized it a couple decades ago and it's part of why I've recovered nearly entirely from it. It does come back a bit if I'm super stressed and anxious, but a lot of it was coming from the failure of my brain to recognize that things were completed and I could move on. I simply took a bit longer to complete the task of turning off the stove or turning off the light and it made that a non-issue most of the time. Now, I don't check unless I have a reason to think that I forgot and with the knowledge that doing so is a vote for more OCD even if I did screw it up.

Hello, I have classic autism and ADHD. I do see commonalities. I think some things that you say are not the way it is best explained. I want to give you information about this, to help you along your path. Not to put you down in any way. I know for sure people who have adhd but not autism. And the other way around. My brother has adhd and he can't get anything going, has no hyperfocus on anything. No special interest. Then I know people with just autims, who have a lot of problem with stopping and starting tasks, sometimes truly stuck in their mind. What works best for me, having the combo, is that I don't feel the downside of autism as much and the downside of adhd. Cause I can get a lot done in a day. I do have hyperfocus. The big difference I see is that people with autism that I know don't lie. That is a boundry they do not cross. And a rule is a rule not a guideline. On the other hand, many adhd people I know are lying around the clock, and most don't care if they get a way with it. Like my brother, het is truly bad at covering his tracks. The spectrum part is something that many people don't understand. I got this from specialist who wrote books. Can't remember the title at the moment. The spectrum means that the people with the same diagnoses(so autism is not on the same spectrum as adhd), can look different on the outside. So it has nothing to do with more ore less autism. I for instance am classic autism, communication I learned later on. I got forced to talk and now I do. I do feel comfortable not talking. But I have an high IQ, so I can mask a lot of trades, and people think I don't have autism at all. The boxes I tick, is I can't plan my day(it has to be spontanius), I have to do things when I am in a flow(sometimes I feel a spike of energy), my memory works differently(if I think of my work I can give a full lecture about it, but not if I am not at work, and I shouldn't prepare), sensitive to smell and high sounds, touch, communication is difficult I don't understand many questions(people who know me well, find a work around and ask extra questions to clarify). And I found out that those boxes can chance over time. By learning to accept my surroundings(through fysiotherapie) I can relearn and not be overwelmed so much. I see that people with autism get more flexible when they get older. I don't see them getting older persé, mentally they are not old. That is what I experience being 46 and comparing myself with neurotypical my age. I hope I didn't offend you in any way. It was not ment to offend you. I tried to keep it short, that didn't work. If I start I can't stop.

I think you have good content, though I couldn't get past how fast you speak & then your lip ring was distracting for me. Yeah, I maybe was huperfocusing? I'm not wanting to be mean or rude, just telling you how this video was for me. I remember my 1st date, 35 years ago... I know I eat fast, (came from a family of six kids) lol. So, I tried so hard to eat slowly, only to have my date say, "Wow! You're a fast eater". What a let down, I was actually impressed with how slow I ate my meal. So, you do you! Great content.

PTSD and ADHD have a large overlap. Every trauma rewires your brain, which is why I think it makes more sense to talk of neurodiversity instead of being labeled one thing or the other.

So I have Autism age of Autism diagnosis 44 years old.. I have ADHD but cause I also have CPTSD, close relationship between the both. I haven't yet been diagnosed with ADHD. I feel so much happier with just knowing what's going on with me that I don't actually need the diagnosis of ADHD. But.. needing a support dog for my diagnosis of CPSTSD is so hard/frustrating. One day!😊🤔

I am 25 and about 3 weeks ago I got diagnosed for both ASS and ADHD, its insane how well I became at masking and thinking everyone does it? I knew Ive always been a bit different and liked being alone (sometimes concerning, but I love my solitude) I got a huge Passion for music production ever since I got a laptop 😂 so yeh a lot became clear to me recently, it was like finding the last piece of the puzzle 🤯

What are your thoughts on the charged topic of "Asperger Syndrome" vs "Autism Spectrum Disorder" (in terms of people identifying with one label or the other). As I understand it, there seems to be some really passionate people simple talking about the labels and to use them or not use them. Myself, I get a bit annoyed by labels because they tend to lock me into something, a box, whereas I'm not just one thing. But I'm a multifaceted individual. But I also understand labels are helpful in communicating a lot of information at once. But I tend to just communicate a lot of information at once anyway! Haha! "Asperger Syndrome" is being negatively associated with the past, although I think there is a lot of debate and ongoing research there and researching history is a tricky thing. tldr; I support people using whatever label they feel they need to use. I myself kinda just like to keep it mysterious so far.

I have both. Its like I have two heads. Im messy, but cant STAND clutter, or messiness. I get hungry, but its too much of a p.i.t.a. to stop what im doing to eat. I cry for no reason, yet I have the awaereness that it's silly and useless. Still cant stop it, though. Lol I will also do anything someone ASKS me to do, nothing that anybody TELLS me to do. My MBTI told me in an introverted extrovert. Im a super complex weirdo. If i dont get me, how's anybody else supposed to? 😊 I cant speak for anybody else, but im pretty much a walking paradox, but hypocritical people bother me.

I have self diagnosed autism one of my to do this year is get diagnosed. It's funny you say hyperactivity can be in the brain too that's how I am. I can talk so quickly and so much then I crash and I'm done with people I'll stay home then I'm back to the next mission my brain has. I have restless days which I want to do things but my body and energy is like nope you need to sit and have loads of comfort food for a couple of days but I also have m.e/cfs and fibromyalgia. I recently discovered alot of people who have chronic illnesses are neurodiverse 🤔

I'm 99% sure I'm autistic, but uncertain if I have adhd. I do tend to think rapidly at times, have difficulty holding a thought all the way through, and like varity sometimes; but I love predictability, eat the same few foods, always wear nearly identical clothes, and become very irritable if interrupted during a task. Asd assessment scheduled in this next April, but not sure if also need an adhd assessment.

Unfortunately, when I was in school, they didn't even test girls for ASD or ADHD (in fact all the research was focused on what kind of magical power girls had that made them immune to ASD and ADHD.... [*facepalm*]) And now at 58, I'm too old to be evaluated for either. I guess I'll have to settle for "I suspect I might have AuDHD" but I'll never know for sure. And of course people will look at you side-eyed and say you're faking it if you ever offer it as an explanation of why you're so weird/annoying/rude/etc.
