What is ADHD Stimming? Well this is interesting as stimming is short for self stimulatory behaviour, and it stems from autism.
Usually ADHD Stimming is caused because the person has a diagnosis of autism and ADHD.
But more recently, it is now common to see people with ADHD stimming without even having an autism diagnosis.
Why? Because ADHD is a neurological disorder the same as autism, the ADHD brain will crave dopamine that you can get from repetitive motion or stimulation which is where stimming originates.
ADHD Stimming can come from being excited about an evernt or pending situation or even nervous about something that is going to happen.
What is your take on this, do you know about ADHD stimming? Please pop it in a comment down below.

I am actually AuDHD. I am realizing how many stims I do, and sometimes more than one at a time. I will be coloring while listening to music (unless I’m cleaning or something, it’s almost always a song on repeat). And sometimes even chewing gum. I feel like I do have a LOT of nervous energy to get out and I definitely struggle with identifying feelings and how the feel within my body.

As ADHD person I stim heavily and it's funny people so much talk about stimming and autism. I can tell , I do it predominantly to release this inner restlessness and partymode, because when I don't do it, I get tense and dissociate emotional. Also I do it to get the dop up in lows to get more concentrated. So it's not ... at least I feel... really emotional bound... more enjoying the muscle tension and the fidgeting when flapping hands, using fidget toys and all. Nice you actually adress it in a video. ❤

My grandson is autistic, he is four. He mainly stimms at bedtime. He mainly makes a noise while crab pinching with his hands. Not every night though. Rarely does it through the day. This is our experience with autism.

I'm AuDHD. I rock back and forth a lot, pace, flap my hands, spin, run in circles, skip, jump, push off walls, hit my chest/any surface, hum, click my tongue... I guess these are the stims I do on the regular. I also listen to songs/watch videos over and over again. And I usually do some of these simultaneously. I also have restless leg syndrome, I've had it for a decade and it mostly happens when I'm lying down trying to sleep.

@moondvst4131
@moondvst4131 Ай бұрын
@@tornadofreaks5744 I sometimes do that too. But I'd say when I'm standing, after a few minutes of listening to my playlists I would eventually find myself pacing for hours, whereas if I'm sitting, I'd probably be rocking back and forth/side to side.

I'm over 50 (52) and spent my whole life unaware of why I'm so very different from everyone. I do self suppression, the problem for me is I rapidly decompress, which is violent destructive and self destructive. This is problematic, say I throw a TV, (or chair or microwave, whatever} through a window and the police arrive without my family to explain what's happened, we fight, I get arrested, I fight the custody staff. I don't engage, I won't talk to a lawyer, and because I have to be dragged to court, I'm sentenced in my absence, and by the time I'm being sentenced nobody cares about a broken window, I'm being found guilty of assaulting police I'm going to jail, I'm not doing 1/2 my sentence, I get no remission for good behaviour. But, with just malicious irony I like being physically restrained, if in custody batons fists and boots just aren't doing the trick, you will get swamped and pancaked to the floor, with your face being pushed into a mattress until you pass out or stop. I'm close to human and absolutely need affection, but I don't like being touched. I do however like being squashed, I love strong fierce hugs, and my family and friends will group hug me, (we do this for each over, we are very affectionate in quite an odd way}. When I 'lose it' ( I suspect that this event could be my version of a melt down), it looks totally willful but it isn't, it's very close to a fugue state, the chains fall and I'm FREE AT LAST and I pain dump in an extreme and energetic manner, and after a life time of manual work I'm strong. Prison is wonderful for me, my anti authoritarian everything is admired in prison, you get drugs/access to drugs, nobody bullies you, gangsters thieves and the murderous have done more to help me than the rest of the world! I have no problem being locked in a cell, I walk up and down, I've always walked up and down, there are pictures of me and my niece (when she was a child) hand in hand walking up and down the front room. She has also known the terrible joy of Christmas in prison. Motherhood has given her a life devoid of police and is no trouble to anyone, but one of her children is 5 and absolutely unable to be told anything, just like me, just like her mum. This isn't learned behaviour, we can't help it. But the pain of knowing this beautiful little girl is going to be kicked and punched is unbearable, her choices are motherhood or prison, and I am distraught. How I behave and my friends/some family behave is totally acceptable to us. I can control myself but it takes me so much cannabis that I have to grow it, if I'm interacting with the police I will take a lot of valium, I will wear nicotine and buprenorphine patches, I will take valium/xanax secreted on me in if I can when arrested. I do this and I don't fight, and it's not even slightly noticeable to the police (how utterly twatted I am), and they love it. I started off with a point but I totally forgotten what it was now I've written all this. But as nobody knows me I have no problem telling the universe - this is where I am at. You've all been fabulous good night.

I've started making natural material fidgets and fidget spinners, would you perhaps like to trial some of them? I've sent them to a few people and so far the result is positive. As a hater of plastic it makes me feel good to make them from something natural.

I have a son, 18, who had adhd, anxiety, depression, ocd, and high-function autism. I don't know what his stimming is. I noticed he shakes his head, and his eyeballs go to the back of his head. I thought it was a coping mechanism when he's nervous about something?

Uh, that doesn't sound like a typical stim behavior. If you can communicate with him while he does that, make sure you try to. If you try and he doesn't respond to you then try waving your hand in front of his face while saying his name. If he still doesn't respond then try tapping him on the shoulders. If you still get no response then check to see if he's confused after he stops. Does he have a blank stare while this happens? Does he stop blinking? Does he drool? Not trying to scare you but it's important to to rule out things like seizures. Especially since autism and epilepsy often come together. Seizures can mimic stims as well. Rocking back and forth or side to side can be a stim and it can be a part of a seizure. Pacing as well can be a stim and part of a seizure. The fact that you don't know his stims is a bit concerning. As the parent/caregiver, you should be able to identify his stims. Maybe not all of them, but you should know at least a few.

ADHD person here with GAD, and I absolutely agree that ADHDers stim. It wasn't until I started working with autistic children that I realize, "Hey, I stim a lot too." And that thumb twirling thing, I did that A LOT as a kid and would find myself doing from time to time as an adult too.

I started stimming about 6 or 7 years ago in the workplace but its just movement's with my hands & fingers. It does help deal with stress & if negative thoughts are about to come into my head, that too but it doesn’t happen all the time.
