As a practing attorney for 36 years, I can tell you that all a law school teaches you is how to think like an attorney and if your lucky, you will learn how to sit for and pass the bar. Law School teaches you nothing about the business of practice of law. Law school does not teach you that if there is an issue with a client, and the client complaints to the Ethics committee, you are pursumed guilty until proven business.

I retired 3 years ago after litigating for 40 years. You are absolutely right. I think the 3rd year of law school should be practical training in skills such as passing the bar, civility, ethics, managing time and client expectations, and self care. I never was interested in Big Law. I began my career as a criminal defense attorney and after one year, I moved to another State where I was a Legal Aid attorney for 30 years, and ended my career working in a small firm representing public entities. The summer after my 1L, I worked for a United Methodist Church social services agency where I came up with the idea of establishing a medical clinic in the so called Black ghetto which still exists today. Other than being a father, this was the most important accomplishment of my life.

The other important thing you did not mention is that the grades are important primarily important to obtaining your first job. I went to a prestigous New York Law School, with the idea that I was going into private practice and starting my own law firm. There is no doubt the first year of law school is the most important. I learned more about the practice of law by working at 2 different types of out of town law firms. Yes it is very possible! I think i said this but sometimes the right connections and networking will help tremendously! From what I hear, Howard’s connections can be great!! @jamarcus1ish4 жыл бұрын
The Aspiring Boss I think you should do a video on PWI VS HBCU law schools. The legal profession is inherently racist. So, talking about how both schools prepare you for the legal profession. However, realistically speaking PWI’s just prepare you on how the legal profession looks in terms of race. HBCU’s you can develop so many relationships with black lawyers across the U.S. This is whats makes it a harder decisions for me.
@TheAspiringBoss4 жыл бұрын

People are so dumb that they will honestly tell you "I went to Law School because I wanted to be like the character Elle Woods in the movie "Legally Blond." Then they don't understand why they can't find a job afterward, and are stuck with six figures of debt in student loans (which cannot be discharged in bankruptcy, of course). You have to be pretty slow-witted to go to law school in the US in 2024, we already have far, far too many lawyers, and not nearly enough jobs/paying clients for them. The law schools just want you money, they don't see students as law students at all, but rather as "student loan conduits" (the money flows form the government, in loans, through the hapless student, and straight into the law school's bank account. Professors drive Mercedes purchased with their students student loan dollars. It's a huge scam; don't be a sucker, don't fall for it.

Hmm. . .they don't tell you that most new JD's don't find a job practicing law post graduation. They don't tell you that desperate attorneys end up doing "temporary document review projects" for $22.00 per hour because there are NO JOBS for most new lawyers. They don't tell you "If there are 10 law schools in your state (see, e.g., Pennsylvania" you will probably end up waiting tables after graduating, or perhaps driving for Uber (with six figure of non-dischargeable student debt). There' a lot con artists don't tell their victims. . .

But at least the person did something positive with their lives. At least they took a chance on an opportunity. People loose jobs and die everyday. There should at least be an opportunity everyday. @@jase5936 Going to one of ELEVEN LAW SCHOOLS IN FLORIDA or one of the TEN LAW SCHOOLS IN PENNSYLVANIA is not "doing something positive with your life." Rather, it is doing something profoundly stupid that will lead to massive debt and unemployment. Law students often say "but nobody told me the job market for JD's was oversaturated and I wouldn't be able to find a job." Really? So if you go to law school in a state with 11 law schools cranking about 1,200 new JD's every year, you didn't think there was a problem with that? Do you honestly believe Florida needs ELEVEN LAW SCHOOLS? Or that PA need TEN LAW SCHOOLS? What, exactly do you not understand about The Law School Scam? I have been practicing law successfully for over 25Y, partly because I chose to go to law school in state with only two law schools serving over 6 million people. That said, I run into unemployed, and severely underemployed, lawyers all the freaking time.

I was wondering what should I focus on studying (anything you'd suggest I can start looking over now) I so badly want to be prepared for this. Would you suggest possibly becoming a paralegal before becoming a lawyer for experience? Also for the bar exam how hard truly was it? Can you explain more to me how you can start working for firms to get experiences, could you start when youre already in college studying social sciences. Also when you mentioned financial issues since I have literally no family to helpe with money issues, im quite literally going to be on my own unless I could get loans or scholarships. So how would you suggest I create my plan to pay off students loans? Im sorry for this lengthy comment, just trying my best to prepare.

You talk a lot about your grades and how you had to work really hard for those grades even though you didnt get a super high score on the LSAT- Do you mind letting us know what your grades have been like throughout law school? I’m taking the February LSAT and I’m worried about getting a low score and would like to know that even if you dont do great on the LSAT that I can still be successful in law school lol. It’s difficult that they put so much emphasis on the LSAT, but that it isn’t necessarily representative of your intelligence or ability in law school. Sorry that was long-winded lol.

Hello. I’ve graduated from law school and am now a practicing attorney. I maintained good grades throughout law school and graduated in the top of my class. I wouldn’t worry about it too much right now given you haven’t taken the LSAT yet. Even though i did things differently my suggestion now would be to aim for the best possible LSAT score you can even if you need to retake. Good luck!

If a professor calls on you is it okay to say you do not know? I am a senior in undergrad and will be a first generation law student.
@TheAspiringBoss3 жыл бұрын
Yes some professors are nicer than others! My goal was to always at least attempt to answer the question. It’s ok to get the answer wrong.

I am a fan from Philippines and still planning to go Law School. Is there any scholarship I could get abroad. :(
@TheAspiringBoss3 жыл бұрын
Yes I’m sure there are! There’s literally scholarships for anything but you must have to do your research.

So are there no graded assignments other than the final exam? I'm confused about what you mean by the final exam being the entire grade.

So for someone like me who's in Africa, does this apply to me? I'm 16 and I have always wanted to be a lawyer so I hope it does😭🤞 I'm kindly asking for your feedback as soon as possible, thank you for the consideration

Do you get paid during your internships?

Depends on the internships but in my experience, for law firm internships, you usually get paid. For judicial internships, it’s less likely.

What does the final exam consist of? I've watched several videos similar to yours where they explain about grading on a curve and that the final exam determines the grade of the course, but no one ever elaborates on what the final exam consist of. Will you please explain or give an example?
@TheAspiringBoss3 жыл бұрын
It will be either multiple choice, a long essay or a short series of essays. In your first year of law school they are more likely to be essay form where you have to spot issues and answer a question or multiple questions. You can probably find an example of law school essay question by googling “law school fact pattern example”. Hope that helps!

If you haven't seen it, check out the 1973 film " The Paper Chase." A bit dated, but very accurate portrayal of 1st year at Harvard Law.

This was great, I've been considering going to law school for about a year now every since doing a paralegal program. I also minored in law for undergrad, so I've kind of always had interest in law. I can't wrap my head or heart around the tuition though. To be honest that is the #1 thing holding me back. I'm in a masters program now that finishes next year, so I'll start studying for the LSAT next year and attempt to enroll for 2023. Hopefully my LSAT score will be good and I can attract some scholarships or even a full ride. This video was great though! I'm trying to mentally prepare myself, so hearing experiences is great!

Did you eventually go to law school? I too, completed a Paralegal Certification Program. I've been visiting law schools in the Illinois area and Wisconsin. I've looked at Michigan as well?

Grading on a curve is a hella ambition booster. I work in sales and that pumped me tf up lol you scared me when you mentioned that you couldn’t study a night before the test and still get an A 😨I’m not organized like that lol
