WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

To be fair, "religion" is a pretty wide label. Some religions are essentially just cultural practices or philosophies, so they don't really conflict with rationality at all. The late Greeks were functionally atheists, although they were closer to cultural polypantheists. The problem isn't "religion" it's faith and magical thinking.

Our identity is important outside of our bedroom because we have a life to live. Dating, finding friends who understand your struggle, people to look up to, safe spaces to go to such as gay bars, gay friendly neighborhoods to life in and so much more. I wouldn’t expect you to understand the subjective part of the struggle, much like I wouldn’t expect the presenters in the video (I know they’re straight, I’ve watched their videos for years) hence why I’m positively surprised that they support my community. "Technically" thought is already a crime. If you kill someone and during interview you state "I thought about killing him yesterday" then you will effectively confess premeditated murder. Even if you intended to shoot him but ended up killing him by dropping a large piano on him by accident. Although the though in and of itself isn't a crime... having that thought and then acting upon it will make that thought a part of the crime. Conversely... if someone with a history of irrational, erratic and spontaneous behaviour commits a murder then the absent of that thought, outside of the immediate act, will, based upon case law, receive a more lenient sentence.
@ShiroiTenken
@ShiroiTenken 5 жыл бұрын
@@hesperhurt Well, to be precise it's not just about having a thought and acting on it, because you can have a thought about killing someone and do it immediately, all of it in a fit of rage or other emotion. It's about having the thought in the past and stopping on that thought to consider it, come back to the thought repeatedly etc. - basically what we mean by "planning". Premeditated murder meant that you didn't do it compulsively (which gives you the defence that you couldn't think straight because of strong emotions, ergo you are not fully responsible) but planned it or at least you had a chance to think it over in different emotional states and the decision wasn't sudden or due to really strong emotions because they don't last long.

Kinjiru731 “but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart” Condemnation for thought crimes are right there in their holy book. This is why Catholic’s go to confession, and other Christians pray for forgiveness. I once was at a battle of the bands concert, and met one of the bands. Who happened to be all born again Christians. I was speaking to them in between bands. One band came on who had a female pole dancer. They became noticeably angry and stormed out. Later I questioned them on what happened. Turns out the pole dancer in their words had “put impure thoughts into their heads” and they had to get out of the way and pray for forgiveness. In other words they had got turned on by a women, felt guilty because they were told feeling like that was a sin, and also blamed her for those feelings because of how she was dancing. It just made me feel sad.

Someone who is guiltless is useless to a Christian. Innocence, though rare, is ironically worthless to them because it takes the bullet out of their indoctrination weapon.

There are a couple of rhetorical tricks that apologists teach other in place of engaging honestly. Cranking out a spray of poor arguments faster than they can be reviewed, that's one we see in this call. Ignoring the merits of the rebuttal is another. When Matt puts a caller on hold, it's typically for one of these tricks. Although they are obviously not intellectually honest, I don't think callers even pretend to use these tricks for advancing human wisdom. I think they're almost purely exercises in self-indoctrination, a result of efforts to keep the membership under control. That's a pretty sad thought, but it fits the data all too closely.

In Norway and Denmark, it’s been a crime, since before I started school some 30 years ago, to expose our children in their schools to the nonsense that is religion. As a consequence we have very few religious extremists or bigots in our country. The vast majority of Norwegians and Danes are respectful of our laws and of each other. Out and about with our young daughters in Bergen or Copenhagen, where we have homes, we generally walk hand in hand regularly exchanging little kisses as young couples in love often do. We’re rarely even noticed but once in a while we attract a negative comment from someone of Middle Eastern appearance. I earn a crust as an advocate, sometimes a Crown Prosecutor in both jurisdictions. If I felt the comments made had infringed our hate speech laws, I would call for police assistance. The offender would be surprised to be stopped by police, interviewed in our presence and arrested. Our laws provide for the deportation of non citizens upon conviction for a serious crime. As prosecutor I would argue that such deportation was appropriate in the circumstances and on two occasions the judges agreed with me and so ordered. I’m happy that our legal protections are adequate.

It is not in my view coincidental that toleration of buggery and sodomy which on *any*view are filthy ant-natural practices came about at a bout the some time that beings of the passive sex were allowed to votefor as we say in Persia, nearly all the troubles of this world arise out of the wiseacreing of women, so aschrurchill so wisely said it was a huge mistake to let women or beings of the passive sex vote.

I disagree with Matt that pedophilic desires are fine, just because the desire shouldn't be punished doesn't mean it doesn't cause harm to the person having the desires or anyone they express it to. The big difference with desires of heterosexualality or homosexuality or objectiphilia vs pedophilia, is that it's a desire to do an immoral action vs. a desire to do a morally neutral action. If someone acts on the desire to fuck a mailbox nobody's going to be hurt, if someone acts on a desire to sexually touch a child that child will be hurt. You can't say that the desire to do a moral or amoral action is the same as the desire to do an immoral action, and you can't say it's fine just because they haven't acted on it, cus it still would cause the person having the thoughts harm and would still need to be worked through. Saying that something shouldn't be punished is leagues away from that thing being fine.

A homosexual has no more choice over that than he/she has over whether they are right or left handed or right or left eye dominate. Rational Justification doesn't apply.

On top of that, even if it were a choice, it wouldn't be immoral.

I would go further than that. Nothing is, in fact, a choice. But homosexuality certainly isn't. The problem that these people have is that they have to see it as a choice, because if not then their entire belief system falls apart. Homosexuality, which like pornography and other things they like to hate, has no moral quality to it at all, is to the religious person an obviously immoral act, and therefore must be the result of a conscious choice. If they concede that it is not a choice, then they are conceding that the things we desire and believe are not choices, and therefore the entire framework of Christianity, ie those who believe are rewarded, those who do not are punished, goes right out the window. Furthermore he also has to disagree about thoughts having a moral dimension to them, because the entire basis of his religion is the thoughts that a person has. His god is inside his head, reading his thoughts, and determining whether he is good or bad, not by his actions, but by his thoughts. This is the essence of Christianity, that deeds alone are not enough, but whole hearted devotion and faith, every thought must be turned towards god at all times in obsequious obeisance. I find it fascinating to see how totally differently such people view the world, and how their strange framework can cause them to react with utter incredulity and disbelief at things that are obviously and evidently true.

@@matthewnevin9156 I've had some really frustrating conversations with people about the idea of what is and isn't a choice over the years. Setting aside the fact that free will does not exist, it seems patently obvious to me that homosexuality is not a choice. Essentially, as you say, those arguing that it is a choice must themselves have strong homosexual, or at least bisexual, feelings. Otherwise it simply makes no sense. Who could possibly argue that a thing is a choice if they themselves never feel even the slightest urge to do that choice. It's one thing to say that chocolate or vanilla is a choice, but when presented with the option of having sex with a handsome man or a beautiful woman for me there is no choice. This is likely true for most people. Why do these people who argue it is a choice think that anyone would make that choice, just out of the blue? To cause trouble? To get back at dad? To make conservatives angry? No amount of rage or desire to show that I am a rebel could induce me to have sex with a man. I am just not interested. Surely this must be true for most people, so why on earth do these fools think that someone else would choose to do something so radically against their nature when those making the claim that it is a choice would not? So I think you've nailed it exactly. The people making this claim must themselves be caught somewhere in the middle, or else they are imputing extremely unlikely behavour into others. I've had similar arguments about belief, with religious people, who have to stand on the idea that belief is a choice, because it is the very foundation of their religion, when it is so obviously nothing of the sort. When I challenge them to prove it by choosing to believe in a different god from the one they do, they protest and say that they cannot believe in something that is impossible to believe in. When I tell them they have just proved my point they stare at me blankly. Belief is an unconscious product of past experiences, a current state that results from what ideas a person has been exposed to, and can only be changed by the introduction of new ideas, or the decision to adopt a new way of thinking about things, and is usuallay a place one discovers one is in, rather than a goal one seeks.

A person who starts to develop kiddie fiddling desires and recognises it and seeks help should be supported. There are cases in medical literature where offending behaviour was brought on by a brain tumour -after chemotherapy it went away - but the behaviour returned when the tumour did. This is legit terrifying it could happen to anybody.

I'd say more, people with such desires are in their majority non-offenders and never touch a child or CP, human beings have a moral compass and that applies to everyone, you have to be either very evil or very messed up to do deliberately evil things to other human beings

In respect of Tracy's final comments, Matt does have a tendency to dominate the discourse in relation to both his co-host and the caller. But this is bourne of being a passionate disputant (plus a little brain chemistry assist), and so can be largely forgiven. What is less easy to forgive, is the kind of pulpit bigotry that is exhibited by people such as this caller.

Get a William Lane Craig up there or a John Lennox and it would be a totally different story. There'd be no f'ing and blinding there I can tell you. And what about his wife and kids? What do they think of his language and agressive behaviour? He reminds me of Christopher Hitchens actually - they both know/knew God exists but unfortunately think they know better.
