As a person who never grew up religious, and only understood later on in life that I was an atheist at all, I sometimes feel that from my perspective this question gets things in the wrong order. I'm admittedly biased, but it makes more sense to me for an atheist to ask a theist why they believe in God. My reasons for not believing in any of the God claims presented to me so far in life seems fairly obvious. Am I off here? Given that I'm essentially a free agent in the marketplace of religious ideas why should I take one faith's claims more or less seriously than another faith?

The UK does not have blasphemy laws. It has laws against hate speech, so you can hardly argue against harmful practices and allow every bigot to intentionally harm people with no consequences. How is regulating harmful attitudes 'offensive and asinine'? It is in the purview of the law to determine what constitutes hate speech as you have no sutomatic right to not be offended, but that does not mean people have the automatic right to be offensive either.

I will say that America absolutely has it's ROOTS in imperialism. Manifest Destiny, and all that; Hawaii was absolutely conquered and folded into the American Empire, and even now, one might consider territories like Puerto Rico part of our "empire." But at the same time, I believe that a lot of our imperialistic tendencies is rooted in religion.
