Aimee Mann has the sole distinction to be the ONLY person outside of Rush to ever provide any backing vocals. And she plays bass. Geddy was helping produce her record. She has a huge soft spot for Rush for really launching her career. This song is iconic and the lyrics hit you different. After Neil passed, the US Army did a great tribute with this song. No drums, a bit slower and the two US Soldiers singing, man brings tears to your eyes and a lump in your throat. was a great tribute. Great reaction and keep doing down the Rush Rabbit Hole.

I was 17 when this album was released. I'm 54 now. The older you get, the harder the lyrics to this song hit. "Summer's going fast, nights growing colder, children growing up, old friends growing older". Peerless.

Rush is like, "We have this beautiful song about wanting to stop time and keep our friends and family and talents instead of having them all slip away. Also, Aimee Mann is on vocals." The video producer says, " I know just the thing! Stand in front of this green screen and I'll use my new video mixer to have all of you fly around randomly the entire time. It's going to be great!"

1:07 "Also, there's no way to not make everybody mad. I can only pick like 8 videos... to fit into the month. And there's no way I'm going to fit everybody's favorite in..." Don't sweat it. Rush has 40+ YEARS of music. You could do 8 rush videos every day and it would still take you years before you covered all of them. Just keep doing what you're doing. You're doing great! BTW... This is the ONLY Rush song where there was somebody other than the Rush members singing with them. Aimee Mann is the female vocalist who lends her voice to the video. She is also famous for her song "Voices Carry"... another song worth checking out.

My two best friends and I were working at a local Long Island 7-11 during the summer of 1987 when we first heard this album. I believe it was released in early September but premiered on the radio in August. This song became our unofficial anthem from that point on and now, some 36 years later we’re still best friends and this song means even more the older we get. We used to high five each other at the line, “children growing up, old friends growing older” and to this day, even though I’m in Westchester County, NY, one friend is in Iowa and the other Japan, when I hear that line, I raise my hand and “toast” my brothers. (And they do the same btw) This was a controversial period among Rush fans, )this album in particular) because of its heavy use of keyboards and guitar effects, but I love it. I had really just become a fan just a few years earlier (1983-4) so the dramatic shift in production didn’t hit me the way it did some. This album came out just as I started my sophomore year (as a theater major) in college and it was just a sweet time to be alive so this album, Power Windows and the other albums of the mid-late 80s will always hold a special place in my heart. Love to see you enjoying yourself during this Rushmas season. Cheers!

Aimee Mann provided backing vocals and was the camera operator in the video. If she looks or sounds familiar, it's likely because she was the singer for the 80's band 'Til Tuesday who had the hit song 'Voices Carry.'

I just finished reading Geddy's new book and immediately started re-reading it. He mentions this period in the book and how there was pressure from the record company to make videos, because...MTV. As a film enthusiast he thought he was well suited to come up with ideas for videos but he was never satisfied with the final product because the budget he had to work with didn't accommodate the vision he had in his head.

One of the best of 80's Rush. So cool to actually see Neil look at the camera, make some faces, but still bring some of his amazing, genius fills, not to mention more deep meaning lyrics. BTW, Aimee Mann was part of a band named "Til Tuesday", and has some great songs herself ("Voices Carry").

This song definitely timelessly encapsulates the time. It doesn't so much suggest to hold on to the past, it's more about recognizing the perfect moments when they're happening, and fully being in those times. Realizing that they when they're gone they're gone. Even if this isn't one that grabs you instantly, I strongly urge you to give it a few more listens. It's one that will likely grow on you the more you listen to it. As for the next song, the color in question is red. I'm going the obvious "Red Barchetta" as that is the most popular one with red in the title. Though there are other songs like: "Red Sector A", "Red Lenses", and "Red Tide" . But those last two are extremely deep cuts that only the most hard core of the hard core fans would reference. Due to them being on the 2nd side of late 80's albums "Hold Your Fire" and "Presto". I would be pleasantly surprised if it turned out to be Red Sector A, but the crushing popularity of Moving Pictures as an album, makes it less likely that a Grace Under Pressure track winning out.

The lady with the camera is Aimee Mann. SUPERB singer/songwriter, not only in the band she fronted in the 80s, Till Tuesday, but in her own solo career. Everyone mentions Till Tuesday's "Voices Carry", which of course is an absolutely great song, but to me her standout work was in the _Magnolia_ film soundtrack. "Save Me" is a wonder, and her cover of Three Dog Night's "One" teaches everyone a thing or two about interpreting other people's material. As a Rush fan having an all consuming crush on Mann that paralleled my crush on Juliana Hatfield (hey, I was really, really young), I was floored when I first saw this video.

I guessed right! Time Stand Still is beautiful and bittersweet, especially considering how open all 3 members of Rush were often away from their wives and children on the road, and how quickly that time with them would pass. They'd been around for 13 years by that point, being very successful for 6, constantly touring, writing, and recording. So the idea of wanting time to stand still must've been extremely powerful to them. As for me, this song hits harder and harder as I age. Time feels like it goes by faster the older I get, which sucks. Let people be mad; it's impossible to please everyone. You could do 3 years of Rushmas and not get to all of their songs. Thank you for doing just one month! My guess for the next video: Red Barchetta.

I'd listen to this song as I drove the kids to and from camp and school and activities and I would always think to myself "they're going to be grown and gone before I know it so I'm glad to have this time now. And I wish time would slow down so it would last longer" Now my son will be 30 in March and my daughter will be 27 in June and I wish even more that time had "stood still". "Children growing up, old friends getting older" always gets me.

Thanks again Charis i love your reactions so far and the great enthusiasm you have shown. A word of warning if Red Sector A Is the next tune you have chosen then you may want to prescreen it. It is a wonderful song one of my Rush favourites but it is dark and the lyrics you may find quite disturbing. Given how deeply wrenching the theme is to Geddy personally many of us cant figure how he is able to sing through it without breaking down. But its a great choice just wanted to give you a heads up.

New theme song! Keep making people mad - it's when they don't care you get concerned. ;) Yeah, this is very VERY 80s in the visuals, but the sentiment is timeless. Esp when you have kids, they're the center of your life 24/7, but all too quickly your time with them dwindles to a couple of hours each week. The female vocalist is Aimee Mann, formerly of Til Tuesday. Red Barchetta! As always, thank you DuckQueen :) I think my personal favorite part of this video is the outtakes, esp since I know you aren't recording it during a Twitch stream. Which means all that chatter is just you... talking to yourself... ok now I'm worried about you ;)

Lately I have been trying to listen to more "recent" albums, including Roll The Bones, Presto, and A Show Of Hands, but I didn't really connect with any of the songs. I have been trying to remember this song in particular because I remember it feeling more like the Rush I know, particularly with Geddy's voice still being strong. So, Thanks for posting this, as I will now enjoy exploring the whole album.

The first song with a color that pops into my head is "Red Sector A". If I'm right, and it's coming out this Friday, I assume you've already filmed it, so it's too late for me to tell you DON"T go into that one blind! If I guessed the song right, you should look up the story behind the song even if the filming and editing are already in the can. Though my personal history isn't tied into the song in any way, there are some lines in there that I cannot sing without choking up (except, oddly enough, the one time I performed it live). I don't know how Geddy did it night after night. (Because Geddy's a boss, that's how!)

Cutting edge video editing right there!! (For 1987, It actually was.) I worked at Tower Records in Las Vegas in '87 when this came out, and any time I was on the main register up front with the turntable in my control, I'd blast this album as loud as I dared. This was in retaliation of the Goth girls that worked there, because they would blast The Cure's Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. They knew it drove me nuts, But it was a friendly back and forth exchange! I really miss that job. Got to speak with BB King once for 20 minutes... Girl, I think you're hooked on Rush!

This is kind of a pop song for Rush. However if you pay attention then you notice all the little touches of extra musicianship (Geddy throws out some fabulous little phrases in this). The video is horribly cheesy (they didn't make many good videos in my view, best watching them play live every time) but I think there are some amusing moments provided by Alex in the background. I hope it is Red Sector A you do (live if possible) as that is such a powerful song, based more around keys but the lyrics are powerful and are quite hard for Geddy to sing due to the subject matter. I did laugh at the beginning when you said you were bound to let some of us down😂. Reminds me that I used to tell anyone that was daft enough to date me "I am a pain in the ass by the way" right at the start... I was always proved right but my exes all said they liked my honesty😂😂😂. To everyone who reads this may I wish you a happy 2112 day tomorrow. This was the zenith of Rush's mid 80s synth heavy approach. It was probably a necessary thing to explore (and this is one of the better tracks from that era, and the video got a ton of play), but I don't think we got fully back to full-power Rush until 2002's Vapor Trails.

Sentimentality is uncool in rock and roll. This is what I love about Rush - they gave no ****s about that whatsoever. They wrote about their experiences and stood behind them. A lot of rock bands would find this uncool. I always admired their sticking to their guns, regardless of what "the cool people" thought. I'm glad you're checking them out.

U were thinking - 'If I could turn back time' by Cher 😂 There r more of 1-word & 2-word song titles by Rush 😂😂 Plenty of 3-word titles as u say: 'Finding my way' ... 'Fly by night' ... 'La villa strangiato' ... 'The Camera eye' ... 'Early distant warning'... 'Roll the bones'... 'Stick it out'... 'Turn the page'... 'Test for Echo' ... 'Half the world' ...'One little victory'...🤘🤘🔥🔥 Yes, this was from the 80's... 1987 to be exact... 'Time stand still' was the 1st Rush song to have a guest singer - Aimee Mann of Til Tuesday. From the '87 album 'Hold your fire'... it was the last of the 80's 'synth' albums by Rush and Alex Lifeson (guitar) had reached his limit by this record. He demanded 1 concept from the next Rush album: "No more keyboards!" Neil Peart had said that even though it was exciting to explore the electronic side of music, 'Hold your fire' was a bit too much - synthesizers, synthesized guitars, electronic drums... the music had gotten too light... Rush needed to steer the ship back. But there were exceptional songs on 'Hold your fire' - 'Force Ten' ... 'Mission' ... 'Turn the page'...🔥🔥 Geddy Lee was sad to see the keyboards go because it was easier to write music and melodies on them... but he agreed w/ Alex that they needed to bring back more of what they were doing... Rush's 1989 album 'Presto' was not a heavy rock record, but it did feature more guitars by Alex Lifeson and less keyboards for sure... but it was a huge improvement (in my opinion) and 'Roll the bones' in 1991 was a great Rush album that is often overlooked... Rush did go for a heavy rock album in 1993 in the 90's grunge era w/ 'Counterparts'.

You should check out Aimee's "Lost in Space" album, which is really good. Rush went a bit 80s synth pop at this point, and I have to admit that I sort of drifted off. Of course, to be fair, they were competing with their own previous work, which was some of the most intense prog-rock of all time. That's a hard act to follow. I get that they didn't want to just keep going down that path, which would have been hard to do. But this era just didn't speak to me.

Aimee Mann is definitely worth a reaction. I recommend "She Really Wants You" or "Lost in Space."

Charis, please react to the US Army soldiers doing a tribute to Neil Peart. I know the video to this song is a little dizzying, I can't wait for you to react to "Jacob's Ladder" R 40 live. "Witch Hunt: live. "La Villa Strangiat" Pink Pop live 1978, The best instrumental Prog rock live performance.

Ditto. That cover of Time Stand Still will always bring me to tears. Without fail. (I think it's time for another good cry and to go and watch that performance.)

"Oh look, who's that bitch" Haha. If it's Red Barchetta or Red sector A, both are great songs. Red Sector A is a very deep song. Red Barchetta is very fun.

My guess for the next one is Red Sector A! (There are more color songs than just one!)

Have you done 2112? It’s wonderful and indicative of what the music industry has truly become (we will We’ve taken care of everything The words you read The songs you sing The pictures that give pleasure To your eye One for all and all for one Work together Common sons Never need to wonder How or why)

Hold Your Fire gets some bad press, but having recently listened through every Rush album, I like it. I'm less crazy about that particular vintage, but I like it better than Power Windows and maybe better than Grace Under Pressure. This song is a standout, and not just because of Aimee Mann's contribution, which is a really fresh touch.

Rush has 168 songs and there's only a couple I think are just ok anything you pick this month will be fine with me. The lady, Aimee Mann has a cool hit herself with a song called Voices Carry you should check out sometime. 😊 Rush has like three or four songs with the color red in the title so I'll go with Red Sector A just because it's a personal favorite.

Red Sector A, Red lenses, Red Barchetta, seven cities of gold… and limelight! The only Rush songs I can think of with colours in the title. Gold or Lime are really good colours…😉

I don't think of gold of lime necessarily as colors but you also have Red Tide, which I love!

I was 17 when this album came out. I defended it tooth and nail to my peers who hated the pastel nature that rush had taken. I loved this album. Decades later at age 53….. I NEVER revisit this album. I’m not ashamed to say so. Geddy has said his least favorite song is on this album. Best album , imo: Clockwork Angels. It dips into every style they ever had.

They are older here than in the other videos you've done - the haircuts make them look younger. Time Stand Still (1987), Subdivision (1982), Xanadu (1977) - yeah, the YYZ in Rio is much later, but that's the problem with watching recordings of songs so many long after they were released. Please, when doing live versions, do a version that came out within a few years of the studio release - not 20+ years later.
