Spot on about Zoysia preferring to shoot from rhizomes. In fact I have to watch it in garden beds because it goes under 75mm edging then pops up in the middle of the bed. It’s manageable, you just need to be aware of it. The other thing you’ll find is you’ll probably have to backlap the mower more often, because zoysia has a higher silica content and causes a bit more blade wear in my experience.

Funny you mention the silica content that was about one of the only things I remember about learning about it when I was an apprentice at TAFE haha

Hey mate, really been looking forward to this update video. Its looking good. I have about 50 customers with Zoysia, all the different varieties. I think its the most beautiful lawn. Just disgustingly slow to recover from any damage. Some lawn take months to bounce back from a scalp of burn. Just have to accept its a part of this lawn type and be patient. But the best looking lawn out there in my opinion. Your couch lawns would looking good with this recent rain. Have a great weekend mate.

I’ve recently discovered your channel and I am enjoying it very much, especially the Zoysia videos as we laid this down at our previous house. It was a lot of work but the results were worth it. We moved last April and after deciding to renovate our landscaping at our new house we chose Iron Cutter for our new lawn. It is very similar in look to Zoysia but so far it looks like it won’t need as much effort to maintain. I wonder if you’re familiar with Iron Cutter and what your thoughts on it might be. Cheers from Brisbane.

Looks good mate cant wait for it's first reno just seems abit wavey I'm guessing from the turf just settling so I'm guessing a little top dressing with sand will even it out 🤙
@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn 6 күн бұрын
Yeah the wavy look is from the fact the area needs a decent top dressing. You can spend weeks getting levels perfect before turfing but it will always need topdressing to make it billiard table flat. Bring on spring

Great video mate. With PGR on the SGZ, I know Sygenta doesnt advise the rates for Zoysia on the Australian label, but it does state zoysia on the US label which is 0.25-11 fl oz to 1000ft2, so about 8ml per 100m2 as a base, should we be starting at that rate? I've heard some horror stories with people burning their SGZ so I've been hesitant to use it. Could we tank mix with Plant Dr Liquid Iron rather than Max Green? I am trying to limit the nitrogen in the lawn as last season I was seeing massive growth and lots of seed once winter came which I put down to too much nitrogen.
@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn 4 күн бұрын
Definitely can use straight plant dr iron no worries there, I went in at 12ml per 100 keep in mind the shorter you mow the more chance you will have of yellowing if the rate is too strong. This SGZ is about to get its 4th hit of PGR at 12ml and have had no issues with yellowing.

Wow 12ml/ 100m2 PGR on zoysia seems heavy going to me. I added 10ml/100m2 + iron in Brisbane and it went yellow so have now dropped it back to 5ml/100m2 and am happy with the outcome on my Empire zoysia. Would be keen to see how yours handled the 12ml. You're watering schedule probably makes a big difference.

Hi Stevo since that video was filmed the SGZ has had 3 applications of PGR w/Iron at 12ml and a 4th due in a week or so. Ive not experienced any yellowing personally.

Do you guys get frosts in Scone? Im keen to see how long it can hang on when it cools down. The TifTuf surprised me down in the Canberra region. Keen to try it at my next house because the TifTuf is a dog to keep out of places I don't want it.
@theaussielawn

We do get mild frost with occasional heavy frost but not as severe as what Canberra would be. Not 💯 sure how SGZ would do in Canberra, I’d double check with a local Lawn Solutions Turf farm member and get their thoughts

Looks great Brenton. What do you reckon the cause of the uneven stripes is after the first mow in this vid? Slightly uneven lawn that’ll improve with more mows and/or slight topdressing?
@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn 6 күн бұрын
It's definitely to do with the fact it needs topdressing you can spend a life time preparing the ground and still lay turf and it need topdressing. If this was couch I would have top dressed it more than once, This stuff really needs time to establish before going hard on it. so till next spring we need to put up with it looking a little uneven

Really enjoyed this one Brenton. That patch is really relatable to the average lawnie using the 17" 45. I got to say it looked great 3 days after application. One of my favourite combos prg and iron mix. Quick question how does sg zoysia compare to qld blue they seem to have similar characteristics?
@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn 6 күн бұрын
They are really quite different if I'm being honest. QLD is definitely faster to repair and it's a little fussy when it comes to selectively controlling weeds in it. SGZ is slow to recover more prickly than QLD blue plus different colour.
