The lore is perfect. When you fight him at basically the end of time, Gayle has systematically killed basically every living descendent of the Pygmy. It literally ends with you getting THE Dark Soul, fully restored and finally whole again since it was shattered in Oolacile thousands of years ago. Gayle did the impossible. He collected every single piece. Except yours. With the Dark Soul restored you then take it to the painted lady and she uses it to create a new world free from the curse that will never fall into rot again. Thus you, the failure who burned to ash, succeed in finally ending the curse of the undead.

Unfortunately, depending on how you roll with the lore, you either helped her make endless nightmare werewolves, or a hundred copy pasted field bosses capped off with a plot hinged upon a demigod lusting after his brother, that succumbs to rot anyways. Also there's some stuff about a dragon race war in the footnotes down there, but that doesn't really relate to anything. Even the guy an upstate dragon seduced to kill hillbilly dragons, that wound up having a psychotic break and going on a yellow pyromania bender kinda just fizzled out. Lemon “3/4 timing” Me “did he say what I think he said?” (Waltz instrumental intensifies)
@themuffinprincesa213 ай бұрын
100%. Dancer soundtrack is the only one in the game that moves to 3/4 time instead of the 4/4 time of every other boss. Its a thing that messes with timing on attacks for people who play to the rhythm of the game vs reacting to the boss itself. Messes up quite a few without even realizing why. Advice to see the difference is to actually play the fight without sound if you're struggling to not have it happen
Or just shift your tempo for the fight. She still matches her music so life is fine
@themuffinprincesa213 ай бұрын
@michaelmetcalfe639 well, yeah obviously, but many people don't even realize this is a thing to do. She attacks in a different tempo than her music. A lot of people 1) won't even notice that she is out of time to her own soundtrack & 2) much less will know that the tempo change is 3/4 so they have to adjust to that. I'm not saying is some huge barrier to the fight or anything, just if people are struggling this is quite a common thing as to why you see comments of not being able to understand dodge timings with this boss from others.
@michaelmetcalfe6393 ай бұрын
@@themuffinprincesa21 actually her music is in 9/4 and what really throws people off is she attacks on upbeats instead of downbeats like all other bosses. The tempo of the boss and music increases as the fight wears on changing the timing mid fight this isn't common but she isn't the only boss to do this. Combining these things together just mangles anyone who is using the music and rhythm of the game without actually being aware of what they are doing. Heck I'm a music nerd and I get caught off guard because I have to switch from downbeats to upbeats. It is actually one of my favorite bosses because it shows the consistency of being able to apply music theory to bosses is a universal in the souls games and a great piece of music that breaks the standard format of the series got a boss that also breaks the standard format as well

I'm aware his was probably joking but Lemon's take on the Demon Prince is so cold that it could extinguish the Chaos flame. In my opinion, the Demon Prince is the best duo fight in the entire series, O&S are great on paper, but when in execution can fall real short, especially with janky Ornstein. The DP execute the duo perfectly by not having both demons rush you at once, you're on a timer until both buff up and go on the aggressive, but splitting the demons up and focusing the 'active' one whilst the other can only spew very telegraphed poison makes the fight smoother compared to other duos that are just a constant repeat of "attack one, run away to gain space, attack one, run away, repeat ad nauseum". Plus the actual DP (phase 2) is brutal but fair, except for the stupid floating chaos orbs move, the DP is easily telegraphed and having the ability to stun helps create breaks. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

The FromSoft Effect is indicative of the Dark Souls series as a whole, and is quite poetic. New challenges, new enemies, new friends.... the cycle begins and begins and begins again, and there are familiar and foreign things. One day it may end, but for now, we fight, until it is done...

"The age of the two candles". I love that. I like the race analogy between Fromsoft and its players a lot. I've been thinking the same thing, wondering where I'd eventually drop out because I'm not that great. I've been using that same analogy. For me, I think Elden Ring was the last lap. It's a good game I'm sure, but man, did I not have fun with its supposed best fights. However, I absolutely adored Sekiro before it, and the exploration in Elden Ring is still amazing, so I sometimes wonder what a Fromsoft game without that race for difficulty but all the other good parts would look like.
@shadowlife153 ай бұрын
Sekiro is the one souls game I haven't played, but that's because I don't find it fun. Mostly that's due to the complete lack of any rpg mechanics, which is the reason I play the games in the first place.
@justsomejojo3 ай бұрын
@@shadowlife15 I like RPG mechanics a lot as well and thought they were the only reason I was able to enjoy Fromsoft's hard games. When I played Sekiro, two things happened: First, I couldn't mess up my character and second, the clear focus on parries made it much easier for me to understand how they want their game to be played. Meanwhile, in the Souls RPGs, I routinely get stuck because some equipment isn't just as well-accounted for, so it feels less good to play. In Sekiro, knowing I had exactly what From wanted me to have (the sword and a few tools) made the difficulty much more bearable to me. But, and this is key, I gradually fell off From's games because I don't enjoy the difficulty in their games coupled with the continuous speed increases, which might not be true for you.

@castillejan3 ай бұрын
Between this video and the podcast about elden ring he put out a while ago, it's getting to the point where I'm starting to think Lemon's issues with games like DS3 and Elden Ring are a combination of "overheard the reddit hivemind complaining which led to unintentional confirmation bias" and an unwillingness to adapt to new combat pacing. It's like he already convinced himself that he didn't like these games before even trying them, and then as a result of that was unwilling to take the time to really master the flow of the combat, which led to his experiences being frustrating and feeling unfair, which re-enforced the preconceived "I don't like the ebb and flow" opinions, etc. DS3's combat is so much more fluid and dynamic than either of the previous souls games, and when you get it down it's satisfying in a way that the other games simply aren't. And like, he comes SO close to seeing that. During the Champion Gundyr fight he commented on how the fight felt choreographed because of how dialed in he was and that it was "almost beautiful". Yeah my guy, that's what we like so much about these games! It's not just about learning the attack patterns and beating the bosses, so much of the beauty of the combat is in the 'rhythm' created when you really master a boss's movesets, that flow-state where you become completely untouchable, and unfortunately both DS1 and DS2 are simply too slow to create that type of rhythm. Man, I just love these games and it feels so fucking bad to see someone I respect talk down about them when half the things he says are literally just not true. Pontiff Sulyvahn's attacks are NOT too fast to react to and they are not guaranteed to hit you after you dodge. You are getting hit like that because you're dodging the attack wrong. You can't see the wind up for the attack because you are watching for the wrong tells. There's nothing wrong with that, we all have bosses and attacks we struggle to get down, and I'm not trying to gatekeep by saying "get good"; but there absolutely is something wrong with touting that experience as universal and complaining about it. When you make statements like "this attack is unavoidable" when it is entirely avoidable instead of "I couldn't figure out how to avoid this attack", you falsely shift the onus of responsibility for your frustration away from yourself and onto the game designers. It's no longer something you have any agency over, so there's no point in trying to approach it differently or problem solve. It's simply an unfair, unfun piece of terrible game design. I'm sure the people who gave up on DS1 because of Capra Demon and never experienced the truly spectacular parts of that game as a result justified it the same way. "Arena is too small, the dogs are too fast, there's nothing I could do about it! What do you mean I could have tried running up the staircase instead? This is clearly fundamentally terrible game design, it couldn't possibly be better than I'm giving it credit for and I only found it this unpleasant because I was stubbornly approaching it in the way i think it should be approached instead of listening to what the designers are subtly trying to teach me!" "... right?"

Fair play. The hard part about transcribing my negative opinions and emotions about specific games (or moments in games) into a video is that the video has to keep moving. Unless I'm doing a full video exploring the minutia of why something feels bad to me, I have a maximum of five sentences to try my best to explain the vibe I'm feeling before I have to move on for the sake of pacing. Which sucks, because you're right - I'm absolutely the common denominator here, and fully admit that some bosses just dont work for me because of how I approach them. But we can't sit on one moment for too long - it's a 40-minute video as it is, gotta respect the audience's time and attention and move on. And that sucks sometimes, because now people know I dont like Pontiff, but dont fully understand why.

His comment about the race between fromsoft and the players was on point though. I love elden ring, but the dlc bosses are absolutely too difficult. I just recently beat the dlc on ng+7 just so I could say I did it, But even on the base difficulty it's inaccesible for so many players. From Soft is on record saying elden ring DLC was their attempt to see just how far they could push players. I bet you the difficulty gets walked back in the next title after the major push back they got this time around, and that's a good thing. DS3 is about peak of how hard a souls title should be, and it's not all that difficult. Another thing that is against Elden Ring is build variety. If you aren't using some form of bleed in the DLC you are legit trolling yourself. The health pools are all 40k+ and bleed procs are health % based. Lemon literally just killed gael with a candle stick in this game. I've seen people beat Radahn with troll builds in the DLC but the fight goes on for like 15+ minutes using those builds, that doesn't fly for most players. It's too hard.

@@TheBacklogs thanks for taking the time to explain this. I really want to stress how much I respect you and enjoy your content. This comment was never meant to be insulting or offensive, these games just bring me so much joy and to be honest when other people bounce off of them I get a bit sad because I want to share that joy with them. Thank you for the additional context and information Lemon. We appreciate you. Edit: I decided to add some additional context here. Dark Souls 3 specifically is incredibly special to me. When it came out in 2016 I was in an incredibly dark place. I was in highschool, but getting kicked out of my house on a regular basis. I was struggling with homelessness, severe depression, “KZbin unfriendly” ideation/attempts, and suffering some extremely severe abuse as a result of how vulnerable I was. I genuinely believe DS3 saved my life. It served as an escape from reality at first, but eventually became a lesson in tenacity, resilience, and determination. It was my first real experience with Souls, and while I’ve since sunk a few hundred hours into each of the other FromSoft games, my DS3 playtime is probably double the rest combined. I’m explaining this not only because it definitely factors into how I feel about the game emotionally, but also because it occurs to me that while these bosses and movesets feel fluid and fair to me, my perspective is inherently biased because of the amount of experience I have with beating them. A few days ago I picked DS3 up again for the first time in years, and it’s been a wonderful trip down memory lane. I don’t have the time to play games I used to these days, but I’m progressing through it at a good pace. Maybe when I get to Pontiff I’ll find that the design is more punishing and less telegraphed than I remember. It will be an interesting experience to try and view the game with “fresh” eyes while keeping in mind how someone with fewer hours in it would find the experience.

@@shadowlife15 I agree with much of this, though I will say I used my int/quality build in the Elden Ring DLC and was fine. Some of the bosses were absolutely over tuned on launch, but others were very good imo. Relana and Messmer specifically were incredibly fair and fun fights once I figured out the right way to approach them. I also personally enjoyed the final boss, but admittedly I figured out I could parry pretty much all of his moves very quickly and had a much easier time than most people as a result.
