I've been traveling to Thailand for over 20 years. This is all good advice. The only thing I would add is that you should always choose an ATM located in a bank, not one in a public area like the street or a shopping mall. The risk that the machine has been tampered with by a skimmer is lower at the bank, due to the regular presence of a security guard.

This was a very informative video. I would have also wanted to know about tourist sim cards and how easy or difficult it is to recharge on the apps. Also, exchanging currency in Thailand only makes sense for currencies stronger than Baht. For others, e.g., Indians, NEVER exchange money in thailand. Do it in your home country. You will get better rates. Even if you convert to USD in India and then change to baht in thailand, that will be 2 conversion fees. So... yeah.. home country exchange is best

Great video and informative as usual! Americans, spot on with the Schwab debit card (no exchange fees and reimbursement of all ATM fees). Just be aware they do not release the funds until 4 business days after you transfer funds into Schwab. Best to make that transfer on Saturday or Sunday so the funds are available by the following Friday. Also, inform Schwab of your travel plans and make sure to have your communication settings so every single time the card is used you are notified via text.

Great advice! When you update this vlog in the future, you might want to warn folks to never exchange foreign currency with any individuals, who are offering a better exchange rate. This is a good way to end up with a bunch of counterfeit bills, as well as run the risk of being involved in a money laundering scheme - both of which can land you in a heap of legal trouble, incl. deportation and/or a prision stay. Another alternative to debit & credit cards is the pre-paid travel card. The advantage of this card is that the maximum amount you can lose, if the card is stolen/lost, is whatever you preloaded on the card. For some folks, this might also be a better alternative to carrying a large amount of cash.

Two things I do to head off any skimming activity on my debit card: 1) Keep it "locked" until I need to use it and lock it immediately after I get the cash. You can do that in your bank's app. 2) As soon as I get back to the U.S., I report my debit card lost. The bank sends a new one with a new number, and I never have to worry about that card again.

If you get an ATM card from any bank, you withdraw with that bank. There will not be any fees. And if you are in the Bangkok area, you will not be charged a fee. And you can press from different banks 4 times in 1 month. If you exceed that, you will pay a fee of 10 -30 baht per time, depending on the bank. But if you press at an ATM outside of Bangkok, such as other provinces, you may pay a fee of 30 baht. In case you make an ATM card in Bangkok or provinces around Bangkok

Yes, Thai currency exchanges are very fussy about foreign bank notes. I've had several UK bank notes handed back to me . One I remember had a tiny tear in it. And another which had some kind of printing error - and that was given to me over the counter by a UK bank. I don't think the Bank of England's printing process of these new plastic bank notes has been perfected yet. And the quality control isn't what it should be either. @@mrslcom Do you need a large amount of cash? I converted $200 last trip (2-3 weeks) and stored most of it in the safe in my room. It more than covered my cash needs. Yeah this is definitely a common occurrence!
@lifeintheprovincesthailand813213 күн бұрын
@thebangkokguide problem is that when the card is sucked into the machine not outside the bank they won't return it to you even if you manage to catch someone when they are refilling that particular ATMm didn't used to give it back inside the bank not sure if that's still the case, luckily I have thai banking so not a huge issue but coming with a single card could be a disaster

Cash advance doesnt work. I went to 5 or 6 banks noone would do cash advance.
@thebangkokguide13 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing. I used to do it but it was at a very specific branch. Most would just tell me to go to an ATM. They may have shut this one down as they tightened bank rules last year.

@ yeah anything that is free is slowly being removed - next they will be taking our blood as payment....

Cash advances are no longer possible;they will tell you to use the ATM machines !That started last August in Chiang Mai where I went over to the counter of 3 different banks and they all refused my request and told me to use their ATM machines
@thebangkokguide13 күн бұрын
Interesting! I used to do that one at a bank near me years ago before I had a bank here. Banking definitely tightened up here in terms of opening accounts around the same time as well. Thanks for sharing!

@ Welcome,yes banks have tightened their policies for sure,the banks I went to last August were all located at Central Festival in Chiang Mai ..

Yeah that’s a tough one these days. Banks really tightened up

Australian banks add 3 % foreign exchange conversion fees. So you get ripped off by huge thai atm fee, then Australian bank atm fee plus 3 % conversion fee plus the banks have the worst rates. Wise card has been best option for me otherwise try to open local bank account and send money to that from wise account. Avoid Australian banks.

Sounds similar to Canadian banks. We get charged exorbitant fees for everything. Record profits year after year 👀

Curious, do the machines have cheque or eftpos? Just for down the track.

220 baht ,no way . I just use my Kasikorn atm so no fee but another one will be a 10 baht fee ,but not sure with a foreign card
@thebangkokguide13 күн бұрын
If you have a Thai bank account you don’t pay any fees. The fees only apply for foreign cards. Cheers

Thanks Cal. Another helpful video. Other then wise what other means do you suggest to move medium or large amounts of money from US bank to Thailand. Let's say you need money for a years rent lease you want to pay in advance and need 10k or so.

You can do swift and Iban transfers. Little bit more expensive but quite good. I use swift to fund investment accounts.

Stopped watching at 3 minutes, every 1 minute getting an ad. For close to a 12-minute video, 11 ads.
@thebangkokguide11 күн бұрын
But if you stopped watching at 3 minutes, how did you count all the ads? Btw KZbin inserts the ads based on your profile. Normally you should only get one every few minutes. I’ll check it out.
@thebangkokguide11 күн бұрын
Checked it out. You're right. KZbin stuck 3 in the first 4 minutes. Sometimes the auto placements can be weird. Fixed that. Thanks for the heads up!

Yes all well and good mate , but you are using a Thai account so it won't affect you, but for all people using cards from their own country, course it will, not rocket science

I never use ATM. They are charging high transaction fees, and they attract all sort of criminals watching for opportunities. I prefer trading with the local banks, and when possible I even open an account in local currency.

I’ve heard Wealth Simple has the best card for Canadians, but they don’t refund ATM fees… just no added fees on their side. To be honest, Canadian banking is among the worst in the world.

I never use a card unless it’s an emergency like changing my flight etc. CASH CASH take CASH 😂 Better exchange rate once your there. Much better than the rip off exchanges in your home country even though they advertise “ No Fees” Cash IS King !! If you lose your cash… your an idiot sorry
@thebangkokguide13 күн бұрын
I used to just bring in cash mostly as well when I first moved here. Made the mistake of exchanging in Canada once. Horrendous rates. Think I lost like 10% in the end on that one.
