Wow, so many comments that expect this technology to cook for them, god forbid without an external wire for ambient temperatures!? I for one no longer use a temp controller fan, and just rely on internal meat temps. This RFX Meat will help me monitor any meat on the grill, on a rotisserie, and in a sous vide bath. I am ready to try this out!

I love Thermoworks and I believe in their products! That being said, I am usually worried to buy a 1st generation product from any company. Seems like there always seems to be bugs to work out or issues that get fixed in later versions. Otherwise, I’d want to buy the four probe bundle. Anyone disagree?
@smeeglesapprentice14684 ай бұрын
I'm not worried about software bugs because they are correctable and I'm confident Thermoworks with their awesome service will stand behind the product from a hardware perspective. Even if it works even half as well as advertised, it will still leave the competition in the dust. I own all of the pricey wireless probe systems (not bragging about my waste of money) and I can't believe I put up with the confusing repeater BS and disconnects all of this time.
@GodofRandomАй бұрын
Biggest issue right now is with how the app is set up more for legacy devices like Smoke and Billows, so there's no way to log ambient and the probes in the same session. You have to bounce between them on the devices menu. I've heard this is gonna be addressed in an update soon, but I have no idea when that is.

Really really interesting. I have a Meater block with 4, then I picked up two Meater 2 plus probes (for their same capability of externally going up to 1000 degrees so can grill high heat with it) then the Fireboard one is landing soon (I have a standalone Fireboard 2 and a second one in my LSG Pellet Grill) and then this one landed. If I get any more I'll have invested waaaay too much money on probes lol. I really like that both this and the new Fireboard one have low frequency radios in them. When I put probes in something like my Workhorse 1975 with 3/8th steel or my LSG IVS is can be a bit tricky for it to stay connected at times. The plus of this RFX one is it externally goes to 1000 degrees (like my bluetooth meater 2 plus probes, which I wish were in a block like my meater block standard) but with the gateway I can go to wifi vs the standalone meater 2 plus only using bluetooth. It also has that lower frequency radio. The new Fireboard one hasn't launched yet but it's interesting since it also has a lower frequency radio (not as low as this though) but also has bluetooth in it which might be nice for versatility. Mostly though I love that it has a lower frequency radio but also connects to my fireboard 2 with a cheap antenna add on. The biggest downsize is it's external probe only goes to 573 degrees F, not 1000 like this RFT or the meater 2 plus. I'm still waiting to hear from them if that means like the standard meaters it will damage them if it goes over or not. Ironically one of the best but simplest things I think I like about the Fireboard wireless option is you can get them with different external colors. It sounds silly but right now if I plug all 6 of my Meater probes into things start flipping and rotating them on the smoker or grill I can lose track what is what really easy, especially the standalone meater 2 pluses that don't have the numbers like the Meater Block (though those numbers are a bit of a PITA once you get cooking). I also think Fireboard has the best software so far and platform so integrating into that is a plus as well. Would be really interesting to see a future comparison between this RFX Meat, Meater 2 Plus, and the new Fireboard Pulse.

Just received mine about 5 days before Thanksgiving. Did the set up, which was a little confusing and kludgy, but not horrible. Instructions could have been a little more "hand hold." Was not planning on using for Thanksgiving, but had an emergency that required me to press my pellet grill into service. Had some disturbing experiences around reliability of staying connected to the probes. Still working with the Thermoworks customer service folks, but I am so far disappointed in the range. Having trouble staying connected to all my probes while they're inside the grill, and the gateway is about 20 feet away. We'll see if we get this dialed in. But be aware that from a signal standpoint this thing does not appear to be the juggernaut they claim. YMMV.

Meater Plus 2 already does most of this, has 5 internal sensors (plus the ambient) and is thinner (RFX has thinner tip but the body is thicker so no real benefit) with a higher cooking temp range - once they launch a block version it will be all I need. This is nice - but I have no issues with connectivity so no big advantage here. Hate the wired ambient sensor!

About time! I figured Thermoworks would turn in a winner, as usual, and I'm sure they'll have more in the RFX line and a V2 probe already in development. They're missing Combustion Inc's killer software features, though, with the predictive algorithms Chris Young and his team keep refining. They need to release an RFX MEAT Pro with 8 sensors and license Combustion's algorithms! Steve Gow (Smoke Trails BBQ) did a round-up of these probes earlier this year, and he found that in most cases the ambient sensors were unreliable. They were rarely accurate, often not even consistently inaccurate, and in the best cases significantly lagged behind the actual ambient temperature, even when the manufacturers claimed to compensate for the effects with predictive algorithms in the software.

This is great for people like myself who have an outdoor kitchen but it is not attached to the house - my wifi doesnt reach the kitchen.....I would really only need about 50 feet to be in range......but you cant place the gateway 50 feet away - you cant place it 40' away....it is weathered to a 4' ambient temp probe - lol - so its 1996 of wasted range......unless of course you dont want to monitor your ambient temp........if your going to sell "range" then the ambient temp probe cant come with a 4' cord and plug in - ....... people will want to bring this in close proximity to their wifi for those overnight cooks.........what good is 2000 range if you can only move it 4 feet?? its a big issue imo......

I would love to see you test two more things, both of which have given me a lot of trouble with Meater. 1. Fatty meat on the grill at high heat, causing flare-ups. A rack of lamb would be ideal. I have given up on using my Meater with rack of lamb because it overheats every time. 2. Standing rib roast at high heat. I use a reverse sear method of cooking standing rib roast and run into major issues when using my existing thermometer. 3. They claim it is dishwasher safe. Please throw it into the dishwasher on a heavy duty cycle with sanitize enabled. Lets see if it survives, or gets clean :) Also, when you had the probe in the ceramic-coated cast iron pot, did you actually have the lid on? I can't imagine how that could possibly work. Where was the base station? This would be unbelievably awesome if that's what you did.
@thermapen4 ай бұрын
1. We can handle flare-ups - the crucial part here is that the temperature internally of what you are cooking doesn't exceed 212. 2. Same thing - we can take the heat! 3. So wait...the low freq signal that gives you 1200+ ft range is between the probe and the gateway but the gateway has to be near the grill in order to measure ambient temp. The distance between the gateway and your phone is normal ol' BT distances. So basically the same limited range as everyone else assuming you always want ambient temp reads. I do like that it is separate from the probe since it can be placed away from the meat and therefore is more accurate but there is definitely some marketing shenanigans there.

A little screen on the gateway unit would be nice just to glance at the temperatures so you don’t have to arse around with your phone all the time. Or maybe a deluxe version of the gateway based on the signals unit might come out sometime to make it truly standalone

Not providing a ambient temp is a mistake IMO even if the temps that could be reported might not be hyper accurate. I'm not sure about thermoworks decision here.
@thermapen4 ай бұрын
Great question - competitors’ built-in ambient sensors give inaccurate readings as cold meat acts as a heat sink, pulling heat from the metal probe and skewing the measurement of the ambient sensor by 75°F or more. You simply cannot get accurate temperatures on a wireless probe because of the thermodynamics of cooking. It's a poor place to have an ambient sensor for an accurate reading.

I often do smokes of 12-36 hours. I assume since you had a wired probe in your pork butt the battery doesn’t last very long. The other question I have is their current probes only last a few smokes if you clean them, even the way they say to clean them. At $13 a probe not a huge problem but at $89 a probe that is a big deal. I use 7-10 probes at a time. I own a lot of ThermoWorks products and love them.

Hey Brian, for the pork butt test, I was already running a head to head test on the Searwood when the RFX MEAT was delivered, and I just used the opportunity at the wrap to test the RFX along with the built in Weber probe. Thats the only reason why that probe is there. As to battery life, I haven’t tested this completely, but I know that you can set the interval that the probe communicates with the gateway. I think the increments are 1 second to 1 minute? Maybe every 30 seconds… I don’t remember. I’m working on another video and don’t have it on me at the moment. I know that is what alters the battery life of the probe, but sounds like a great future test. I have been told the probe can go for multiple days when fully charged and set to the most infrequent update rate. Haven’t tested that though.

I've tried telling every probe manufacturer that the 2-in-1 design is fundamentally brain dead since the ambient probe is affected by the meat. So, hats off to Thermoworks. That said, Why didn't they. make their ambient probe wireless? Sit tight for Version2.

Couldn't you just use a second wireless probe for the ambient temp?

Yeah, you would think a separate wireless ambient probe would be pretty easy. I feel like there has to be a reason.

@@MaineDroneServices-dr4xn All the probes of this type require that the 'meat' end be buried in the food because that part can't handle temps over about 220F. Thermoworks, to their credit, at least left the 'ambient' part off.

The only downside I see for this device is that I'm now on my third wireless thermometer and somehow I see a fourth one in my future. The low frequency radio design is genius. I agree that the ambient temperature aspect of a wireless thermometer isn't reliable.
