To get his sound on "And Justice for all" put the bass volume at "0", and do not plug it in to an amp or recording device. You can still use an AMP just make sure the main power switch to the amp is in the "off" position, and the amp is unplugged.

No offence dude but this tone doesn't really match at all, Jason's tone is very aggressive sounding because of compression and having a huge midrange boost. If you listen the isolated bass tracks of AJFA and the Black album his tone is actually pretty clean, the sound you had here is too muddy and undefined. It actually reminded me more of Cliff's sound than Jason's. It also helps if you hit the strings really hard, if you watch footage of him playing that's how he plays.

Great video (even though Enter Sandman is played incorrectly especially at the beginning & prechorus). Jason is one of my top 3 favorite bassists & personalities. Himself & Robert are amazing (especially Robert when he was in Suicidal Tendencies & Infectious Grooves) however, as far as a better FIT for Metallica - definitely Jason. Robert was one of my favs even before Metallica (saw him open for Metallica with ST in the early 90's). But when I see Metallica now, even though they are still amazing, I miss that extra piece of excitement & spark that Jason provided.

The 'dirt' on the isolated bass track from 'And Justice' is a combination of fret buzz and down-picking, not an overdrive or distortion effect. The ampeg's overdriven sound compliments his bass set up, but it is not the source of the grit in his sound.

Cliff was using Morley fuzz wah until 1983 and then he switched to power wah boost, same wah jason was using. The drive of cliffs tone was because of tube screamer. Jasons tone was a bit less rumbly and more compresed. Over all good job but you missed few points here n there.

Buddy I've been trying for months to get his live tone from 91-93. TL;DL: Boost your mids, play with a pick and play aggressively, play with new steel strings, run a compressor, and pick just in front of the bridge pickup. He used Ampeg SVT-2 heads. He had the graphic eq on them set with the 2 lowest bands slightly cut with the mids boosted and the treble flat from what I can tell. He also used LaBella steel roundwound strings and Dunlop Tortex 1mm triangle picks- the blue ones. But here's the kicker. He used Alembic basses live, which he ordered with their Series II pickups and electronics. Basically their top of the line package. Which had a built in low pass filter and q for each pickup. The 2 pickups are active single coils, with a dummy pickup in between as a hum canceller. And as if trying to get a hold of an svt-2 non-pro wasn't hard enough, used series 2 Alembics are pricey to say the least. So my advice, find a good eq pedal, get a pack of the triangle picks, order some LaBella strings, boost your mids, downpick fast, hard, and alot. Also pick just in front of the bridge pickup. It looks like he favored that area when playing live. You can find the SansAmp BDDI for pretty cheap for his dirtier sounds. And for his bass solos with the "My Friend of Misery" segment, to me it sounds like he just used his Boss flanger. Last thing is that I'm pretty sure he used alot of compression too. I've gotten relatively close with these methods (aside from having an alembic and an ampeg head). Hope this helped!

Commenting again because mine from 1 year ago was a little harsh. Jason's AJFA rig was a Wal 5 string into a cranked SVT. The Klos Apollo actually works pretty well for it. However, for the Black album and Load. He was actually using an 81' Black spector NS-2 with EMG pickups and Hazlab preamp. (Every song on the black album was the NS-2 Except for unforgiven which was a P bass. See Queensryche's Operation mindcrime if you want some additional reference for that kind of tone.) There's actually no chorus to my ears on the original "My Friend of Misery" bass track. But obviously live and stuff. (There's chorus on the intro of Sad but true.) Jason inherited Cliff's power wah boost pedal from Burton's parents when he joined the band. He used that to play bell tolls. (Along with a few various distortions, he's used the Tech21 XXL, Classic, as well as a standard red Big muff in the mid 90s. He also used flangers and phasers a lot. (King Nothing into for sure.) He never used Spector live because his sweat would go into the body and fry the electronics. (His Alembics solved this problem, but were becoming a little too heavy and a little too flashy for his evolving taste, hence why he changed to Sadowsky. Who would coat the electronics in something to keep them away from his sweat.) IMO Jason's bass writing itself wasn't too special (With exception of his beautiful melodic bits on some songs). But his rhythmic tightness, and tone were perfect for the more polished sound Metallica were gravitating towards. Also you have to be plucking at the bridge, it's a requirement. It is probably the easiest way to get closer to that sound.

My precision bass has Passive EMG's not the GZR set but the normal HZ set I can get the Newsted tone if I wanted to but I play mostly in C# standard.

Speaking from my personal experience EMG J-Set simply provide you with Load-era tone and - even though they are not as thick sounding as humbuckers - let you get very close to his live tone. Numerous basses were used for the highly desirable Black Album tones, but the full-spectrum sound coming from the EMGs seems to be approximately the sound Jason Newsted was going for on it.

@@Justice_Hammer I made some research and found out that Bob Rock said that having tried every single bass and amplifier available Jason "ended up with" with a P-Bass and an Ampeg SVT. This could mean either they decided to record an entire album with this setup, or simply it was the winning combo in their own little tone contest. Reportedly a 12-string bass was used for the intro for Wherever I May Roam. I'm not saying you are wrong, I'm saying it's not really clear what exactly they used. There was certainly some P-Bass in this story 😀

(Which was a P bass. You have to be completely tone deaf to think that it's a P bass. P basses have a lot more low mids and way less top end then the spector has.
