❣❣ Thebe is definately a gem. He really has expressed South African history in a beautiful way not only is it educational, it is nostalgic(of course to us south africans) and relatable to many africans too. He is one designer I think has really grasped the idea if executing a concept really really well, he's not trying to follow conventional fashion norms but is making new ones instead. We're here for it. Great video

He is the kind of person who should excel. He really displays what South Africans are capable of. I am very in awe of his work. Bit of a heavy comment but I feel people like Thebe are the types who can start healing our fractured country X

As a South African, the appreciation for Thebe’s hardwork and recognition as a pioneer for the versatility of African fashion is really heartwarming. He is an inspiration for many and showing us that living one’s truth is exactly how you find what is meant for you🥺

This channel is above noise. Foster's reviews are always interesting, never lazy and the tone is never snobish and always smart. Foster's smartness is certainly shown in the use of the word '' might'' at the begging of this video when he talk about Magugu possibility of becoming a classic. Creative industries are often falling into the trap of looking for the next creative prophet and the prestige of eventually being the one to say out loud : I told ya... Not so long ago, same speech was served to us on Wales Bonner's work and she happened to be quite predictable and boring after 4 seasons. Magugu's work is one to be watch for sure. The clothes are well constructed, the fit is great and the narrative is very genuine as Foster's beautifully exposed it. Never the less, as we look to another continent, one should expect to be destabilized by a new proposition. unfortunately, as cute and refine Thebe's work is, the proposition is clearly westernized.. is it a commercial decision ? Starting by the logo, whatever it represent, its still reminds of Lavin's vintage logo which was inspired by greek vase from the fifth century B.C. We all love Pheobe Philos work at Celine.. and i guess that Thebe is not exception :)

Thebe is doing an incredible job teaching people about SA stories 😭 because of him my friend Annah (the model on the bed) is on vogue , on your channel that warms my heart , it is so inspiring! I’m doing my 3rd year in Fashion design and designers like him and Laduma give me hope that I’ll succeed in the fashion industry both locally and internationally something that was never a thing in the past.

I sincerely hope that the honest , NOT ironic, curious pursuit of inspiration shown in Thebe's work actually becomes the work for the next generation of creatives because it comes through so clearly in the end result. Edit - Also the narration of the photo / editorial literally makes the expression genuinely more accessible which fashion almost never is.

It’s a term that gets used in video games a lot. It’s when a designer makes you believe that they’re creating more then just clothes. Like the clothes are part of a whole lifestyle or world. Does that help?

I have to make a small remark though. If trench coats and microscopes are goofy, surely a printed big microphone is too
@gabberina3000
@gabberina3000 3 жыл бұрын
i think what bliss meant is that a trench coat and microscope is a very obvious way to include spy aesthetics into a collection, and makes it reminiscent of the pink panther: goofy. screenprinting a microphone is a much subtler and unconventional way of interpreting this.

Haha my dad said to go to a Benjimin Moore store and show them a picture. He said that the color likely doesn’t exist anymore but a company like Moore can give you an update on that color tone that would actually look more modern. He says there’s too much blue in that green for it to work in 2021 😂 My dad experiences the entire world thru color, he thinks about it a lot 💫💫

Unfortunately in my eyes another overrated designer part of the new wave of pseudo-intellectual designers whose work is built on these unnuanced "references" which the press laps up because it's easy to decipher and analyse (particularly when the designer tells you how to view the collection and what everything means) and so it strokes the viewer and critics' egos. At core these are incredibly unemotional, dull clothes dressed up by the fact that they are "referencing." A mini microphone printed on a jacket in a collection about spies, could you dumb it down any further?
@pancakeslayer101
@pancakeslayer101 3 жыл бұрын
Im curious what constitutes a true intellectual designer in your eyes? to be honest I prefer designers which are clear with references rather than guarding them. Obviously this doesn't mean you have to like all the clothes, I personally think some of them nice, but again, perhaps I lack the nuanced understanding required.
@runt2856
@runt2856 3 жыл бұрын
@@pancakeslayer101 It's difficult to answer what constitutes a true intellectual designer but I suppose the most important thing is to make the viewer feel something. In order to feel something from any form of art or creation there has to be nuance and space for the viewer to think. Clothing and collections like Magugu's are almost claustrophobic with their heavy-handed, on-the-nose referencing which to me evokes about as much feeling and emotion as reading a wikipedia article.
@qn363
@qn363 3 жыл бұрын
@@runt2856 Could i ask you for designers whom you feel fit this i deal? I'M genuinely curious to see if my two braincells could see the difference.
@runt2856
@runt2856 3 жыл бұрын
@@qn363 I would say Hussein Chalayan, Carol Christian Poell, Rick Owens, Thom Browne, and Alexander Mcqueen are good examples of designers who are able to evoke strong emotion and thought. They all use varying degrees and levels of referencing but all also stand alone without any knowledge of these references which is where so many designers fall flat.
