I will be laying out and cutting simple timber frame rafters for the dovetail log cabin and showing some extra details to embellish the appearance of the exposed rafters. I'll be using a new 16 5/16" worm drive skill saw sawsquath and chainsaws.

I've seen people butt the rafters together like that. But in my mind it would be stouter with a ridge. Might not be, that's just the way my daddy taught me. You can also figure the rafter length on the inside of an outside wall. And it's a good way to check rafter fit before sending them up. Shoot there's all kinds of little tricks and different ways to do things. I like learning new ways and techniques. You can never gain too much knowledge. I really enjoy your videos!

Howdy Johnny- I’ve put up a lot of rafters using a ridge. It’s a tried and proven way to frame a roof. But, since these rafters are exposed it has a cleaner look with them being half lapped and pegged. I really didn’t have to have a 4 by 6 but 2 by 6 would have looked out of proportion with the size logs I used. I enjoy cutting out rafters like this. I put them together on the ground and anchor the peak and set them like a truss. I am always open to learning different ways of doing things myself. If a person is paying attention they can learn something every day. Take care and God bless you

I use that Skilsaw method to do my timber frame notches and pockets, etc... cut a bunch of kerfs, knock them out with a hammer and then clean them up with a 2 1/4 inch chisel. Works great when you don't have that monster Skilsaw or your superior chain saw skills!! Many ways to skin a cat, as my mother would say. I love putting those chamfers in the bottom edges too, dresses them up nicely. I just clamp a block on them as a stop for the router, much easier than trying to eyeball those marks under the router.

As always, i thoroughly enjoyed watching you go, I always pick up a little trick or two from you, so I'll share a quick easy one with you, on the rafter tails at the bottom edge, I like to stick a paint can onto of an old piece of cardboard and scribe the full circle then cut it out , then place two marks on the cardboard after you line it up with the rafter tail and decide where you would like that half circle to wind up then scribe it onto your rafter tails ( pre marking them all) simply cut away the bulk with a chainsaw or the circular saw then use a 4" grinder to smooth it into that semi circle shape up to your marks, I'm sure you've probably seen this or even done it before, but it sure does look sharp when applied to a build, love your stuff my friend, keep on building! 🔨😊👍✏

Nice video! I've never seen anyone clean timbers with a wire brush. Learn something everyday. I've been meaning to get one of those skilsaw's. A friend of mine has one, he said they're the only way to go if you're cutting big timbers. I've always just used a regular 7 1/4 blade. That big boy sure would save a lot of flipping and cutting. Plus it would be a cleaner cut.

Howdy Johnny- I like to start out on a clean timber. It had been raining when I picked these timbers up at the mill and it’s almost impossible to keep the forks real clean on the forklift and there was a little mud on them. Howdy Denis- thank you so much. The rafters are 4”x6” southern yellow pine. I put them on 24” centers. Hope you are doing well up there and staying warm. Looking forward to seeing the next video. God bless

Great series Paul! Thanks for sharing with us. Quick question, what brand is your overalls? Been trying to find some locally but no one seems to carry them. Blessings.

Howdy Ahoda- I’ve worn Roundhouse for years but got to where I couldn’t get them so we got on their website and ordered them from the factory in Oklahoma. The ship them to me. I appreciate you watching the videos. Take care and God bless you

Hello Sir. I watched this video again to understand the nuances. The channel or “dado” that you cut to slide in a freeze block - does it run all along the log height (at 45 deg angle of course) or do you keep it a little short? Secondly, the inside of the channel/dado is aligned along one of the edges of the bird’s mouth so that the outside of the channel/dado is further towards of the tail of the rafter or is the outer line of the channel/dado aligned to an edge of the bird’s mouth so that the inner line falls within the bird’s mouth? Hope I could explain myself. Thanks. Regards.

Howdy AS- the dado groove is on the outside of the birdsmouth and goes all the way across the rafter. The board I put in goes from the top edge of the rafter down to the bottom edge. It goes just over the outside of the top plate log and seals off air and bugs or birds from coming in. Hope all is well with you. God bless you

I would like to watch your episodes in order. How do I find them in sequence?
@TheBeardedCarpenter

Howdy Dave-if you will go to the channel page and click on videos you will see a drop down list that says date added, click on that and choose date added (oldest) and it should put them in order from oldest to newest. Thank you for watching and God bless you.

I watch everything on an I Phone because I don’t use the computer, that is strictly for the Lady. When you have a video up -where you see “The Bearded Carpenter “ touch that and it will bring up the channel page. You will see the word “ videos”, touch there and you should see the videos. You can scroll down to the first one. They will be in reverse order. Let me know if it works. Blessings

Howdy- I found it on KZbin by typing in 165/16” Sasquatch Skilsaw. There were several places to get it. I didn’t know they were even made until my friend brought the one I’m using to me. I just now looked it up and maybe you can find it- I hope so. It seems like a great saw. I also have a Ryobi beam saw but can’t find any information on it. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless you
