Thanks to our growing Patreon community, we are able to cover the cost of this weeks wood chipper rental!
100% of the patreon funding goes directly toward renovating The Chateau de Lesigny!
Special thanks to our dear Patrons: Jesse, Bernadette, Theo, and Morgan for your outstanding support of this Beau Chateau!
You can help support our renovation projects by joining our Patreon Community and gain access to exclusive videos, updates and more!
Join us, Daphne and Ian, as we embark on our new chateau renovation projects! This week, we make more progress in renovating the original chateau gardens. We meet with a local organic fruit tree specialist who provides us with some answers to our gardening questions and we plant the first trees in our garden to replicate the style that once existed 400 years ago...
Our "beau chateau" (The 500-year-old, Chateau De Lesigny), is located near Paris, France. Most of the structures around the chateau domain need a full restoration, so we are investing everything we have into making the property thrive! We are learning more about french culture and developing new skills along the way!
As a French/American UC Berkeley graduate in Agriculture (Daphne), and a U.S. Air Force Tactical Response Force Veteran/ Kinesiologist (Ian), we share a love for challenges and adventure. We have a long road ahead of us and we are excited to share the experience with you!
You can support our renovation projects by joining our Patreon Community, where you can also gain access to exclusive videos and behind the scene access with Daphne and Ian! All patron funding is used to renovate this historical French Chateau. Every patron is paramount to our chateau renovations and we thank you all tremendously!

If you have a lot to plant you may want to consider using a drill and auger to dig the holes. I have not used it myself but have seen it on KZbin on Garden Answer. It's a US family that owns a nursery and uses various sizes of augers for planting bulbs, bushes, etc. It makes quick work of things. You may save yourself a tonne of time and energy! Good luck!

Loving the progress of the garden restoration. I just hope you didn’t plant the cypresses too deep. Watch to see how to water sits in the well that you created around the base. If water collects and gathers at the base of the tree it could kill it. Easy fix. Just pull the tree out and put more soil in the bottom and then replant making sure the rootball of the tree sits elevated from the native soil by about an inch or so. Remember that the soil that you back fill into the hole needs to be packed tight around the rootball. Good luck! ❤️😊

Have you thought about using a small excavator to take the top layer off the garden soil and grass? As the drone flies over, it gives the amazing views with the edges you guys dug, and a small digger may help to uncover the cobbles too. The tree guy was fascinating! He seemed like his knowledge was endless. What a gem of a man, that he is coming alongside your garden adventures!!

You two are like me and my guy--we work like field hands! 😂 Last spring we fully landscaped our front yard. You haven't really had fun until you've met the challenge of bring home three 8 foot crape myrtle trees in a Honda CRV (no, we didn't do them all at once. We are hardworking, not crazy). But landscaping is some of the most satisfying work you can do--instant transformation! You guys both work hard and keeping entertaining us, while your dog lives a great outdoor life. 😂👍

Ok you two, I am tired watching you and it's 8pn NY time and I am lying in bed, so you know you worked your tails off. The garden is going to look so wonderful when you are done, I am so happy you will go with an electric fence instead of hunters for the wild boar issue. Not to add more to your plate, but the cobble stones sound interesting, I think a fire pit when all is finished would be a nice place for some R&R with a nice glass of wine at the end of the day. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to the next video. Love from N.Y.

Wow, this garden will be a hallmark of planning. As I heard it, you would like beauty, symmetry, variety, yield, and relative uniqueness, in a configuration which complements and optimizes the Chateau Garden's layout. Your local nursery owner is a Godsend; imagine how many technical errors he'll ensure you avoid, based on his knowledge. Think of the ongoing assistance he'll be able to provide you with pests, harvesting scheduling, fertilizing, etc. Just his advice on an electric fence to keep out the wild boars and the essential oils to keep out the deer will save you from untold losses and despair. He and his wife should be permanently included on your invitation list for important events at the chateau going forward.

I planted our first apple tree last month. Hope it will do ok. I have a beautiful “ biggareaux” cherry tree that gives us so much fruit. ( late frosts not withstanding) The blossom makes you feel like you are in a fairytale. Climbing up into it’s leafy branches at the end of May beginning of June under a beautiful blue spring sky to pick the bunches of juicy shiny red fruit is such a joyful experience. It is such therapy for the soul. The fruit freezes well and now in the darker months we enjoy hearty warming cherry crumble. Fruit trees are the best way to use your money ever.

Hi, I came there because of the thumbnail. What a great surprise it was. I lived the first 21 years of my life in Lesigny, my mother still live there now. Back in the days she even had a dancing school and sport shop in the village from 1975 to 1995 then she moved to L'Oree. This brought up lots of memories of when we were young and trying to go secretly fishing carps in the moat , to be chased away by the dogs of the previous owner. Later in the 90's my father knew the owner and I went to visit a the Chateau with him (legally this time). I'm now currently living in Thailand since 17 years, it was very refreshing and great to see what you are doing with passion. You have a new subscriber. Thanks you

a tip for the garden beds this is much easier and will supress the weeds way more effectively, lay cardbaord around all the beds you want covered then add mulch or manure/compost and it will be ready in spring for planting
@themarcula

Nice work, but did you account for the size of the cypresses at maturity? You may lose the definition and symmetry of the stonework when they grow up to or overgrow the stone boundary. I know they have a narrow/columnar habit, but they seem quite close to your borders. Your visualization technique with the bamboo was a great idea/teaching tool, but you could also use a cardboard cutout to help visualize the footprint of the plant. It really helps when laying out beds. As others have noted, I'm really glad to see you promoting permaculture and sustainability. Best of luck. Oh, and a note on flamethrowing weeds. If you buy a flamethrower/garden torch, be sure to check the BTUs. They vary widely. The average disposable (bad) lighter is 3000-3,500 BTUs, so that's a starting point when shopping. I bought a garden torch here in the States that is 500,000 at full blast. It is most satisfying to go out in the rain and torch. Can't wait to see your progress.

I just subscribed to you. I am so pleased you want to keep your grandfathers dream. I renovated a little cottage and hope when i go to heaven my kids will keep it and love it. Its definately not a chateau but i love it like your pappy loved his "dancer". God bless you both. Ps my grandaughter is Daphne and its my favourite flower. I hope you plant some.Just bit by bit! Step by step! You have a lifetime! Enjoy each step

Have you thought of espaliered fruit trees. They look beautiful. Where your terrace is in the garden, how about a beautiful pergola. Or the pergola at one end of the garden where you have unearthed the curved part of your grass. Enjoying seeing the unveiling of your lovely garden. Love your channel.

Thank you for including the fascinating conversation with the apple tree grower. I have two apple trees and I never get it right when's best to pick them... now I know 😁
