There's people that synchronize lights to music In a neighborhood about 20 minutes from our house. There's a radio station they suggest you turn your radio to in your cars. There is big signs posted before you get in the neighborhood telling you what station to turn to.Some also play the music outdoors until 10 o'clock.

Yes it is a low level transmitter that might reach a few hundred feet. So the FM signal is kept very local. The newest tech is in individually addressable LEDs. Those really open up all sorts of special effects. Hang a curtain of LEDs, and you have a low resolution TV screen.

There was a family in my home town that owned several acres just outside of town. One year their very young daughter, I think she was somewhere around 8 or 9, came down with cancer and had just a short time to live. Her parents decided to fill their acreage with as many lights and decorations as they could to give her one last extraordinary Christmas. After she died, they continued to put the decorations out in her honor. People from everywhere came to see them. All the children loved it.

Driving around looking at lights one year I saw a house that was beautifully decorated. Their next door neighbor had one display. It was a sign that just said "Ditto" with an arrow pointing towards the beautiful house.

Fun fact: Some houses in the US rent out radio stations for when people drive by they can change the radio station in the car and listen to the music match up with the lights. My family and I use to go out every year looking at all the lights for hours on days. This year hopefully we will be able to get back out their a bit and enjoy the lights once more. Great video

They aren’t all outside it’s through a radio station. People can rent or set up radio signals that you can tune into while in your car and it plays it. If you go to the 4th one I think the one with the guy explaining at the very beginning they show a sign that has a FM station on it

It all depends on your city regulations as to what times you can play your music. It's pretty laid back in our town. We can play the music all the way up till midnight. As far as I know, nobody's ever complained, at least not yet.

Yes, those lights are synchronized to music and yes the music is played outside. It's definitely a thing that gets done over here. Some houses also do a light show for Halloween, and then they reset for Christmas. That is typically all done by the owners of the house on their own. There's no professional service for putting up lights that I'm aware of and it's common place for neighbors and friends to help with the setup. If anything they may have an electrician come out and help with the electrical wiring so they don't keep tripping breakers for it.

Growing up our neighbors hired people. We were invited to a tree decorating party. Turned out we were there to watch the help put up the lights and tree and decorate it. Really bizarre.

Light display's that elaborate can on average take between 4 to 6 months of planning, and then it's usually a month or 2 of setting the lights up and doing test runs. There are light displays so over the top that it takes about 9 months to get everything figured out and up and running, and they'll normally start planning in Jan/Feb just to have it up by Thanksgiving or December 1st. As for the music, most places in the USA have noise ordinance laws and so you can start playing loudish music at around 8am, and you have to stop between 9pm and 11pm (depending on where you live) before the cops come. Average monthly bills for light shows range between $600 to $2000+ (depending on how many lights used, and electricity costs in your area)

We used to set up a winter wonderland, ice and snow theme for Christmas. Now we just do Halloween. Massive numbers of spiders off all sizes and skeletons. I like to keep a theme. We get tons of compliments from parents with there trick or treaters. It's nice to be appreciated for your efforts.

Funny you mentioned Halloween. Our mayor has officially changed the name of our town from October 1-31 to Halloween. They even changed the banners from Conway to Halloween. All the trees downtown have hundreds of plastic pumpkins. Every year Conway sc is adding more activities for October.

The music does get played outside and the lights are synchronized to move with the songs. Most people do their own decorations. Sometimes neighborhoods will work together and synchronize their streets to the same songs so as you drive through to view the lights you aren't bombarded with noise from different songs playing. Neighborhoods have contests to try and outdo each other. It's a lot of fun!

From what I understand, it takes sometimes months to set these displays up. Someone in a local neighborhood did a huge set up and they started in October, and they had around a quarter of an acre to decorate. I remember, as a kid, we would take drives to certain neighborhoods at Christmas time to just look at the lights. It made good family memories.

We have an area in the city close to me that has had a Christmas tradition for over 50 years. It's called Candycane Lane. No vehicles are allowed on those 3 blocks during Christmas. It's a lovely walk. Everyone comes with donations for the food bank as there are barrels sitting around everywhere for you to donate them in.

There is so much land space in the US that it is common to have large plots of land and large homes that are far cheaper than other places around the world (assuming you’re not in a city) but that’s why some of these houses seem so large or have so much land. Yep. For the heck of it, I went looking and found a 2700 sq ft (250 sq m) 4 bed/2 bath house on 62 acres of land for $350,000 in West Texas (which is where this guy said he was from). So, you can definitely be solidly middle class and still own land in the US.

Yes we take decorating the outside of our homes with fantastic lights for both Halloween and Christmas very seriously and we always try to go for bigger and better next year if possible. Now as nice as these are I've seen even more impressive ones in person... And it's fun to get in a family van with the kids and in laws and go look at Christmas lights as we all sip on home made hot chocolate and listen to Christmas music and sing along to them... The music is played outside and the lights are synchronized with the music. But people will usually turn off the music if they have close neighbors and it starts to get late. There is no professional person we call to put up our lights. Everyone here especially in the south, I live here in Alabama, we make things, fixes things and do things all on our own. Now sometimes they have friends and family or neighbors join them in helping put up the lights outside. But no, all that hard work is mainly done by the owners and whoever is kind enough to lend a hand. That would just be plain lazy to have somebody come out and decorate your house for you. And I for one enjoy decorating for Christmas and it is even more fun if you have some help. But yes they get on their ladders and get it done.

In many of the medium to large towns and cities of all sizes, there are usually whole neighborhoods who sync up and decorate both sides of a street. It could reach a mile or so long. Folks come for a walk through and some will drive it, traffic is usually organized. Depending on the town there may be a fee per vehicle or donations are encouraged! That would be cool to see. I've never seen neighborhoods that lit up before. The smallest town I lived in was population 4,000 and the largest 60,000. Most of the houses that have lots of lights are either big expensive houses like most of the ones in this video or just people who collect and grow their collection through the years. I've been to big light displays you can walk through put on by towns themselves, but I've never seen one at someone's private residence before. Most of the videos I see where people from other countries react to what the U.S. is like tend to leave out most people's reality and only show what people with more money have or what those neighborhoods look like. There is such a huge difference here between the standard of living depending on what tax bracket you fall into. Working class people never seem to get included in these videos even though they make up the majority of the country. These videos also tend to only talk about life in cities or suburbs in metropolitan areas. I don't ever see people make videos about what most small and medium towns are like. I feel like people in other countries get a false sense of what life is really like in the states. I think that's one of the reasons why there is quite a bit of shock when people move here.

Also, if you happened to have walked up, there is a speaker where you can push a button to listen. We have a family just up the road (different neighborhood), who puts on a HUGE light show for the community. It is crazy amazing with approximately 5 songs. Children love it. They work with their neighbors concerning all the traffic this annual event invites to an otherwise very quiet neighborhood.

We have a State Park in Logan, WV that has miles of lights and you can drive through the park in your car. It’s a tradition in our house at Thanksgiving we all pile into our vehicles and make the journey to see the lights. It’s absolutely beautiful, will definitely get you in the Christmas spirit. The majority of people that do over the top Christmas displays are not wealthy. As the Texas man stated people start collecting pieces and lights and over time build up huge stores of decorations over the years. What is most costly is the electricity. And people plan all year for this event and have ways of having a budget for the temporary displays. Ive lived in neighborhoods where every house is lit up and people come from all over the city and neighboring cities to drive by with their families and look at the houses. It's a yearly holiday event for many families, couples, etc. Not one of those houses is owned by a wealthy person. These are just people that are passionate about their hobby & making people smile & happy during the Christmas season.

My parents, siblings, and I used to often drive around the countryside all night in the late 90's-early 2000's, looking at all of the crazy Christmas light decorations people had. We, or my mom in particular, would refer to them as "pretties" to us kids, and my baby brother. I've never heard of someone hiring someone to do their lights. That being said, I'm sure it's been done somewhere. But the average Americans hang their own lights. Neighbors might help each other but most people just do their own. Someone like the Texas guy with almost a full scale attraction might get volunteers from the community, but I'm willing to bet he's doing at least some of it himself.

There are currently signs up around where I live for a company advertising that they hang Christmas lights with their phone number. I think it’s actually a landscaping company that is trying to branch out to other things in their off season. I’m sure there are some people that will take advantage of their services.

We have friends who live in a neighborhood where the entire neighborhood is lit like you see in these houses. They start to decorate in September! There are several neighborhoods that decorate in this way. In most neighborhoods there are several who do this. Even houses that are decorated “modestly “ are beautiful! Usually, people turn off the displays between 8-9. Oh yes, music is playing just as you heard it-loud! I mean , not deafening, but pleasantly loud! They are all synchronized to music. What times the music plays and how late at night the music plays depends on where you are located and how it’s set up. Some neighborhoods have Home Owners Associations (HOA) with rules and regulations and some areas have restrictions. Worse case scenario is a noise violation or Law Enforcement interaction with a warning.

There’s a few houses around where I grew up that would do things like this, there was even a whole street where one house started going bananas, and then the entire street started doing it in what I’m sure was some kind of toxic unhealthy “keeping up with the joneses’’ situation. People would drive in and look at everything, but if you did you could see how cheap the various pieces were. Tons of duct tape and cardboard, so it’s definitely not that expensive! The electricity bill on the other hand…

Definitely check out more. As someone said, houses that have synchronized lights usually have a sign out front with a station you can tune into to listen to what the lights are synchronized to. There are some really awesome synchronized light shows, and there are starting to be more Halloween light shows on houses too

My brother has an enormous one in LA shown on the news every year, cars line up for miles to drive by, the music changes with the lights, its updated every day, the neighbors volunteer for tours, as its interactive, and it's 2 months in set up and breakdown, stored in a warehouse.

The music, the lights are all synchronized. Most of the people who’d this are doing it themselves not hiring. It’s crazy fun for them. They get their families involved.

Hey guys!! Love this one!! Many of the houses are synchronized with a computer that controls the lights and the music. All of the truly elaborate ones I've seen in person, the music is only loud enough so that you can hear it when directly in front of the house. The three with the huge, massive displays were contestants on an American show called 'The Great American Light Fight'. You can find the videos here on YT. You should look them up! One of my favorite pastimes is just going for a drive for a couple hours to the local towns and such just looking at all the lights and displays setup.

We have houses right near me that were on that Christmas light fight show. But I guess I never thought about how lucky we are that we can get in the car every Christmas and go look at endless amazing houses with just jaw dropping light displays!!

It often becomes a neighborhood rivalry to out do your neighbors. 🥳 And they are synchronized to the music through a computer. And often broadcast on low power radio station.

The synchronized displays have local radio station frequencies so you can listen to the music in your car, but they also play outside of the house so people walking by can hear the music.

The ones that are synced to music are usually playing a Christmas music radio station. They also usually have music quietly playing in the yard.

When I was a kid my family and I would drive around the neighborhoods looking at Christmas lights, not as extravagant as some of these but still nice. I feel I haven't seen as many really decorating like they use to.

You asked about the time it takes to put everything up. A lot of families start in October getting decorations put out & lights strung. The light & music are coordinated via a computer program. It is awesome to see in person.

Tradition in my damily is to make to go cups of hot cocoa, pile up in car(s) and drive around searching out great houses. Never gets old for me and I'm 67 now

My dad had our house set up with synchronized music that played out of our garage. Played from sunset until 10pm. And yes, we climbed up on ladders to attach the lights to the house!

Decorating for Halloween is also a huge thing in the US. There is a big Victorian style home in Kenova , WV that has dozens of volunteers come every year to carve thousands of pumpkins for the display. Last year there was 3000 carved pumpkins in their lighted display.

I don’t know how things work in the UK but here in the US the best time to purchase Christmas lights,decorations, etc, is right after Christmas we find sales at 50% 60 % and better OFF sales ... a great and affordable way to grow your holiday decoration needs, and with the help of the internet you can get lots of great tips and tricks to make your house SHINE!! including syncing music and lights to work perfectly together! I've seen houses that have signs telling you what channel to tune your radio to to hear the music, but it's also fun to make up music for it and try to keep up with the lights and make it make sense. 😅

We use to do this when we were younger. My husband would dress up like Santa and I was Mrs Claus. We would hand out Candycanes to everyone that came by. We would start decorating November 1st. And start lighting everything up on my birthday the 13th of December until the new year. My husband and I hung all the lights ourselves. We played Christmas music over speakers, but only from 7-8 when Santa was out giving Candy away and getting everyone’s lists for Christmas. It was our gift to our community.
