It can't be understated to anyone not from Canada what he meant (and means) to the country. The clip where he said he couldn't continue the run, he was on a stretcher by the ambulance to take him to the airport and home for treatment. A nation's heart was broken. I am racking my brain to think of any person forty years on who can still evoke such a visceral response . If you were around at that time you bawl on cue when you see that clip. I have read it time and time again, it is always the same response.

Canadians are serious in their respect for, and remembrance of Terry. Decades after his death, he was still being voted the "greatest Canadian" in polls --- far above any political or entertainment celebrities. Most us see him as the embodiment of our best values. Having recently been diagnosed with cancer myself, I am perfectly aware that the swift and effective treatment I've received was made possible by his courage. I go for treatments in a huge research complex which wouldn't be there if he hadn't made his run.

Yes. My kids, now 18 & 20, always looked forward to the Terry Fox run day at school, which schools do right from Kindergarten thru to Grade 12. It was always a schoolwide run through the neighbourhood followed by a party/bbq on school grounds. And of course, all of the kids would gather donations.

Steve Fonyo, also with an artificial leg, would later finish Terry's run across Canada. Rick Hanson would later do it in a wheelchair, not stopping with Canada, but wheeling across the the world in his wheelchair.

Steve Fonyo would later go on to be a drug addict who wasn't even allowed to have artificial leg in prison, because he would use it as a weapon to attack other prisoners. Not exactly inspirational.

There was an interview I saw of Terry's mom, Betty. She said that when he told her he wanted to run across the country, she thought it would be too difficult for him, and asked "Why Canada? Why not just BC?" (British Columbia, his home province). His answer was "Not only kids in BC get cancer, Mom."

When we cheered Terry on through our town, hubby and I had no idea of the impact he’d have on our lives. His courage and research dollars helped our 2 year old daughter through 3.5 years of chemo at Toronto's Sick Kids hospital. That same little girl is now 32, she’s brilliant, gorgeous and a honeymooner this year. She works hard on fundraising year round in Terry's name. He’s our personal Angel! 43 Years later, he still brings people to tears when they learn about him. I watched and prayed he would make it, I along with every Canadian shed a lot of tears when he passed away. He united Canada like no one ever has before or since.

Terry Fox is a true Canadian National Hero. Steve Fonyo, another Canadian cancer amputee would finish Terry's run in his honour. Steve passed in Feb 2022. Another impressive Canadian hero is Rick Hansen, "The Man in Motion", who wheeled across Canada and around the world, to raise awareness and money for spinal injury research. He and Terry were friends. Today the Terry Fox Run is an international event in over 70 countries. The song St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion) was in his honour.

I grew up in Port Coquitlam (ko-QUIT-lam) where Terry lived from the time he was 10. I knew several people who knew him personally. I lived near his elementary school. I frequented the Terry Fox library where his prosthetic leg and several other artifacts from his run were kept in display cases. His mom--a fiercely dedicated parent--came and talked to us about Terry when I was in elementary school, only a few years after he'd passed. The Terry Fox Foundation float was always the one people clapped the loudest for in our annual May Day parade. I ran in the Terry Fox Run every year I was in elementary school. Not too far from where Terry ended his run in Thunder Bay, Ontario, is the Terry Fox Memorial and Lookout. At the lookout there is a plaque dedicated to him, with a statue of Terry standing on top of it, looking out over the north shore of Lake Superior.

I remember watching Terry's run on tv, followed every update. That two hops on his leg and one hop on the prostetic leg made me feel so sad but just imagine what his body went through doing a marathon every day seven days a week, just mind blowing!! He gained the love and respect of every Canadian and when he had to stop his run it was so emotional, we so much hoped he would be able to return but sadly that was not the case. I cried when he passed away and to this day every time I watch a video of him and his courageous run I tear up. He was, is and always will be a true humanitarian and our greatest hero. I was 9years old when Terry Fox was on his marathon. My class started following his daily progress. We were all devastated when we learned he had to stop…..I also remember taking in part every year in the Terry Fox Run. When I watch anything about this amazing man, I still get choked up….he is my Favourite Canadaian! I live in Thunder Bay, where Terry stopped his run and my class watched his press conference on tv when he was there. I visit the Terry Fox monument from time to time. It’s still quite something to see and think about all these years later.

I grew up in Thunder Bay. To this day there is still a beautiful monument to him on the highway where his quest sadly came to an end. It's in a good spot, just slightly off the road on an elevated position where his statue has a good view of Lake Superior.

Wow, I forgot about this guy. I remember seeing his story/documentary when I was a kid.... back in the 80s. The hop made me remember because I never saw anything like that before. I just had a huge time warp with these memories. Almost like when you go to a kindergarten classroom for the first time again as an adult and you smell the finger-paints and playdough. I remember my school was beginning to organize with other schools in my city to welcome him when he came through. They had just finished setting the venue when the run was put on hold. I cried. I was only 5 or 6 but because of the coverage at that time, I thought a God was coming to my town. When he passed away, the world seemed to stop. There was an assembly, and as a child, you could tell something truly bad had happened. I think he was a hero not just to Canada but the world. In his name, people from all over the planet have collected to fight cancer. There is a statue outside of Thunderbay in a park. It is where he stopped running. It faces west to Vancouver. It is a beautiful place that every Canadian should see, but people visiting Canada should stop and see too. Great video, sad yes, but like Terry, give one hope for the future.

Look up ESPN documentary Into The Wind. It was produced by Steve Nash the basketball player. Theirs also a few movies and documentaries that go more in depth about Terry. Growing up in Canada, Terry Fox was the only hero I ever looked up too.

I remember hearing about his story here in the US. Incredible story. For a similar inspirational story that has raised a lot for cancer research, check out Jim Valvano’s “Never give up..don’t ever give up” speech. Valvano was a former college basketball coach and game analyst who had cancer and was being recognized by ESPN for his courage in facing the disease. His speech is still inspiring 30 years later.

As a kid in Canada, you learn about Terry Fox very young and kind of regard him as a long-lost big brother. Every year in September you follow in his footsteps in your school's Terry Fox Run and it's always a very warm little celebration of Terry and the fight against cancer. :)

I will be donating!!! I ran this marathon 9 years in a row in my 20s. As a Canadian... Terry Fox is a legend to us here in Canada! My son did his first Terry Fox in Jr. Kindergarten.. and he's now 17 and has participated every year since. Terry Fox was and still is, a true Canadian hero and inspiration. There are other charity events as well (in addition to the annual run), which honor his memory, with proceeds going to his foundation and the cancer society. A local event in my area has people seeking donations from supporters who can watch them have their heads shaved. Local hairstylists (of which my daughter is one) donate their time. There is always a really good turnout, especially for it being a small town, with several thousand dollars raised each year.

There is another guy named Steve Fonyo, who picked up where Terry stopped and finished his run. Nobody talks about him. He should have just as much credit as Terry. He ran the rest of the massive marathon. Steve is often talked about as being not worthy, but, while Terry died Steve lived long enough to live and make the mistakes that we all do, but Terry didn’t. There should be a you tube video about him as well. He did a great job of finishing Terry’s marathon of hope.

@@bonniewenker6248 I don’t see it that way. He said he was finishing what Terry had started and he did. He happened to live longer than Terry so he had time to get into trouble. Terry spent all of his time fighting his cancer and being a great role model. Steve managed to be like all of us, imperfect and it came out. Doesn’t negate the fact that he finished the course in Terry’s name.

Great Canadian. The other guy like him, who is still alive, is Rick Hansen, the Man In Motion. I met him once about 25 years ago at a dinner for handicapped people and I believe he’s still alive. He is fast in his wheelchair. But Terry Fox is a legend. He was on the list for Greatest Canadian as voted by Canadians about 20 years ago. I believe Tommy Douglas, the Father of Canadian Medicare, won. Well deserved.

Someone noted that the man who advanced Medicare, the system that treated Terry and made it possible for him to begin his Marathon of Hope, was the one person who received more votes than Terry. A kind of cosmic balance, imo. 💖

Terry Fox is more than well respected in Canada and a true Canadian hero...I live very close to his home town....He is so well loved in this country. He has raised over half a billion dollars for cancer research. There are annual Terry Fox runs held every year here in Canada..Canada is the second biggest country in area in the world & made it to Thunder Bay Ont, half way to the West Coast. Imagine that!!!! What a brave and selfless young man he was... I cry every time I see him at the end of his Marathon of Hope....Thank you for posting this!!

When the Twoonie (Canada's $2 coin) was being developed every Canadian and their brother wanted Terry Fox to be on the coin. However our out of touch politicians went with a polar bear! It still makes me shake my head lol
