You're supposed to split the Biscuits in half before you pour the Gravy over them. It's easier to cut down thru the exposed fluffy part than the outer crusty part. And it allows the Gravy to soak into the biscuit.

As a True Southerner, I grew up eating Biscuits and Gravy. Now a lot of times you can have the biscuits with either butter, honey, or jelly/jam without the gravy or sometimes with. I was wondering about the tea, though. Was it real southern "sweet tea" which would be startlingly sweet to someone who's never had it and the kids didn't react as I might have expected them to at that. Also, did it have any lemon in it? American biscuits are very easy to make, & there are a bunch of recipes online for them. It has very similar ingredients to American breakfast pancakes, actually. The sausage gravy might be a bit harder to make, since we have uncooked ground pork sausage available in grocery stores, and I don't think the UK does. I've heard of some taking the sausage out of the casings & cooking it up to make the sausage gravy, though.
@luminousmoon86

You can easily make homemade US style breakfast sausage, though. And it's what I'd recommend since having the right flavor profile of the sausage is key to trying authentic biscuits and gravy. There are recipes for homemade US breakfast sausage online, but it's basically raw ground pork flavored principally with sage and thyme, along with other spices. You just mix them together and then cook as needed.

Quick an simple southern gravy--- In a glass messuring cup add 50 ml of oil, (bacon or pork sausage grease preferred) one packed tablespoons of flower, an one half teaspoon of ground black pepper, and mix smooth. Then finish filling the cup to the 160 ml mark with milk. Mix again. Microwave 1 minute. Stop it if it starts to boil. It can boil over fast. Mix again an serve with bread sausage or eggs. Just a fork works for all the mixing but I use a milk/cream frother. Not traditional but taste the same as the pan version. With sausage is better both ways but still good without.

A lot people eat biscuits plain (hot) or with butter or jelly. As for biscuits and gravy, the biscuits are usually cut in half and laid flat so it soaks up the gravy even more. They are soooo good. My family usually eat them on the weekends when we have more time to sit down for breakfast. Beans and Toast is not common here, in fact I have never heard of it. To all those who don't know Iced tea in the South is called Sweet Tea. Namely, because in the South sugar is not added to iced tea, tea is added to sugar. Don't let your kids drink it or they'll be bouncing off the walls for hours. Biscuits literally go with anything. Butter, jam, butter and jam, peanut butter, you can slap a sausage patty inside one and have a breakfast sandwich, same with ham, and you can add a fried egg to the mix. Split one open, warm it up, pour some honey over it. You can use them to sop up extra gravy or stew in the bottom of your bowl. They're round discs of magic.

When he was drafted to Viet Nam, the Army version of biscuits and gravy was chipped beef (cheap) in a bechamel on white bread toast (also cheap). Apparently they called it shit on a shingle. So from the time I could form a memory, I remember asking my parents what was for dinner. And my dad would say “shit on a shingle!”. He was always the one that made it. It was almost like “his” recipe. He doesn’t make it as much anymore, but when he does it’s always a treat.

Just the slightest variation that makes it stand out to you. The presentation is definitely a little off putting for some, but the taste is up there. I hope you're able to try it some time because it really is delicious. I've watched a bunch of videos of Brits trying American biscuits and gravy. One thing that I've picked up on, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, is that in England there only seems to be 1, maybe 2, types of gravy. In the US we have LOTS of different types/flavors of gravy. It's as if we really embraced the idea of gravy and tried to make gravy out of many things. Sausage gravy is just one of them and it is primarily, but not exclusively, a breakfast gravy.

May I give you this advice as one who has enjoyed sausage gravy and biscuits for close to 8 decades. When selecting a sausage mince as you would call it make sure to use a brand that you like, you can even take sausages that you would use for bangers and mash remove the mince from the casing and use that. As for the gravy 2 table spoons fat (sausage drippings, butter, oil or even lard) + 2 table spoons lard used to create a roux and then add 2 cups whole milk. As for the most basic southern home made bisucit you need self-rising flour, buttermilk and butter generally 2 cups flour, 1 cup butter milk, 1 stick of ice cold butter cut into the flour prior to adding the buttermilk. You can add a pinch of salt or dash of sugar or both your choice. Once the dough has formed place it on a well floured surface and pat out do not roll it out, fold over into thirds and repeat the process but again be gentle the object is to create layers without making a tough biscuit. Using a glass or cup to cut out biscuits rounds place on a oiled baking sheet about 1 inch apart and then brush with an egg wash or milk wash place in a 400 degree aka 204 cel oven for approximately 14 minutes and enjoy. This should result in flaky layers and a tender biscuit. Hope this helps and that you enjoy.

In the states, "gravy" does fundamentally refer to the same thin, brown, highly seasoned stuff you're used to seeing. However, we also attach the name "gravy" to a lot of other meat based sauces, this classic sausage/sawmill gravy being one of them. Also, despite the appearance, those aren't scones. Biscuits are a quickbread similar to scones, however they tend to be more savory and, as one kid put it, fluffier than scones. I will say though that sweet tea is a bit too sweet for my tooth, though.

Southern style biscuits and gravy is my absolute favorite food/meal ever. I have it at least twice a week, sometimes 3 or 4 times a week. But you need a really good biscuit with it...preferrably home made biscuits.

My family is rooted in the Midwest and I grew up eating beans on toast, I put it in the oven and once the beans were nice and hot I'd add a slice of cheese and let it melt. Major comfort food as a kid. :)

Biscuits are good with butter, good with honey but best smothered in country gravy. Southerners make the best chicken and their serving sizes could feed an army.

Lovely breakfast - the 'lumps' are bits of sausage. Dirty rice is another southern breakfast food. SO I mix both sausage gravy over dirty rice. During the great depression - granny used toast with 'chipped beef / white gravy. Cheap and easy to make.

Gravy is a seasoned sauce that is usually meat-based and thickened with flour or cornstarch. (The one exception is mushroom gravy, which can be vegetarian.) The meat contribution to gravy is au jus and/or stock/broth and/or fat from meat sources. These meat sources provide flavoring plus the fat necessary to create the roux that thickens the gravy. In America, we have a wide variety of gravy types, including milk/cream gravies and beef/poultry/venison gravies. We even have some flavored with espresso/coffee, chocolate, and beer. As for our biscuits, biscuits & gravy is always served with the biscuits halved like scones, laid on the plate with their fluffy interiors facing upward, and the sausage gravy poured over the biscuits so the fluffy interiors can sop up and absorb the gravy. Also, while you CAN purchase biscuit mix as well as sausage or *country gravy in instant packets, the recommendation is to make them from scratch and avoid the commercial mixes. They're easy enough to make from scratch and they will taste a lot better than the commercial mixes. (*Country gravy is very similar to sausage gravy except there is no sausage in it; it's often made of vegetable shortening or butter, flour, chicken broth/stock, milk, salt and pepper.) Note: American biscuits are savory, not sweet; they're a lot closer to being rolls than scones. Also, they are offered as a bread to accompany any meal at any time of day, and they are preferred hot, not cold. If an American gets a cold biscuit, he will most likely heat it up, so he can halve it like a scone and put butter on the fluffy interior to melt. Just like with toast or scones, American biscuits (when not covered in gravy) are often spread with jam, preserves, or honey before being eaten, especially when served with breakfast.

I and most people I know ALWAYS split the biscuit. Just split apart and put it on the plate with the crust-side down. This allows the biscuit to absorb and "hold" the gravy. Otherwise the gravy will just roll off the "crusty" outer surface of the biscuit.....and you wind-up with "scones" floating in a sea of white "magma". The biscuit needs to absorb the gravy....so, split it.

I moved from Pennsylvania to Georgia some years ago. My baseball playing days were over but softball was very popular here so I joined a team. We would play tournaments many weekends and sometimes all meet up to eat breakfast before heading to our first game. I remember the first time when we went to a restaurant that was basically southern cooking. Got the biscuits and gravy and I’ve been hooked every since. So good. One funny thing though….we had like 15 guys there and every one of them ordered iced tea. When it came around to me and I ordered milk I’ll never forgot the looks and reactions I got. It was like I ordered gasoline to drink. And while I do drink iced tea from time to time I’m still a diehard milk drinker.

you guys need to see the other channel he has called Korean Englishman. His wife is Korean but he started the channel to spread the joys of Korean food to everyone. He actually met King Charles at a royal function last year doing the channel. He also did a series with a graduating class of boys with their headmaster on a trip to Korea which changed their outlooks and taught them the world is much bigger than they thought. he just finished a series with a couple of British rappers in Korea. but his most famous series is with some football players and some London cab drivers trying korean food. Its surprising hard to find good korean food in England but London is a good place to start. Korean food is fairly easy to find in the states just you have to weed out the bad places from the good.

Andy Luo it is this school they did it with. They first filmed in the school for about a year before the trip to Korea. Josh met his wife in Korea while he was going to University there and they also got married in Korea. His wife has her own KZbin channel called Gabie Kook. She does the cooking for Jolly and Korean Englishman channels. Gabrie is a professional chef. They have a whole series for this school. They filmed at this school because of their friendship with the Headmaster of the school.

Country gravy is usually made with sausage and sausage drippings, although in a pinch you could substitute hamburger. Salt and pepper to taste. My mother and grandmothers also would fry up chopped up potatoes and onions, then pour the gravy over that.

Great video guys! I’ve actually seen the video before but not with you both reacting. Win-win. I’m from the South and I make my grandmother’s biscuits and gravy. It’s really easy to make and it’s wonderful and makes me think of her every time I make it. Here’s a mind blower…breakfast for dinner. Depending upon the kind of day it is I’ll make breakfast foods for dinner and even though it’s a bit odd at first it could quickly become a favorite. Want my grandmother’s recipe? Maybe we could barter and exchange for something of equal value like, I don’t know, a free Patreon pass or something. Kidding , Let me know if you would like the recipe for biscuits and gravy or any other southern style recipes. I have several. Good to see you again.
