It's actually a credit hold. The point is to pay for incidentals and possible theft. If they didn't, and you packed the towels and robes, and broke the windows, they wouldn't know until well after you left. With a credit hold, they could still charge the card on file. Typically, the funds are released 1 to 2 days after you pay the bill. After that, it's up to your financial institution to get the funds back to you.

@@davidcosta2244 Trivia: When Van Halen infamously wrecked their hotel room over seeing brown M&Ms in their bowl of them, it wasn't because they were under the influence, it was because they were angry with the organizer and were getting back at him, since he had booked the room and would have to pay for the damage. The M&Ms thing wasn't silly or selfish, it was a flag about doing things right, attention to detail with the local organizer. Setting up for a concert's a complex operation that requires both. If they skipped the part of the contract about candy, what else on the list did they skip? So that's the flag, and that flag meant they had to check everything on the list themselves. That was a ton of extra work because the organizer skimped, so they did as much damage they possibly could, as long as it was on the organizer, to make him pay for the extra work. Wouldn't you feel that way, to have your personal prep before a tough job disrupted because you have to check all the mundane things that all have to work right to be successful? I know I'd be ready to do that, wouldn't you?

Security Deposits: typically they hold your credit card at hotels where you can go to their restaurant or their gift shop and buy things that allow you to just say "please charge it to my room". So you don't need to pay for anything in the hotel property with cash while in the Hotel because you tell them to add it to your room bill.
@Skulllywag

And the charge to your card is generally "pending" or "on hold" until after you check out. So yes, you have to have sufficient credit line for the charge....but in most hotels, the charge never goes through...unless you charge stuff to your room, kick a hole in the wall, or steal the towels.

Unless it’s a super-ultra-fancy hotel, the first thing you do when you check-in to a hotel/motel is find the ice-maker room. Your own room has a bucket for ice, and you immediately fill it up. It’s free. The ice-maker room also usually has a soda machine. In way fancy hotels you have to call room service for ice. As you now know, if you drive more than 3-4 hours in the States, you have a cooler in the car. You can buy your ice (comes in 10# bags) just about anywhere, but it’s best to hold out until you get to your hotel.

We don’t have mirrors in elevators for many reasons: someone would break it by accident or on purpose every day, close quarters allows for invasion of privacy opportunities, if they do break they can be dangerous to children/pets or useful weapons, broken mirrors bring bad luck and are costly to replace, injuries bring liability law suits, we don’t need them in elevators because have mirrors in every bathroom, home, dressing room, car and purse.

Ice machines have been in hotel/motels for decades. In motels (where you drive up and your room door leads outside), they were usually by the check in area. But as you may have noticed, they're quite loud. Between the whirring of the machine, and the crunching when ice is dumped or someone gets some, it was a noise problem. So many hotels took out a small room and made it for the ice maker, so there was less chance of annoying your guests while getting ice.

Yeah, the security deposit is a thing, but most Americans don't notice it because if you have a US based credit card they don't mention it and it expires as soon as your room has been cleaned after checkout (so it's essentially for us a hold, and if you don't steal a robe or trash your room that hold goes away).. It might not be common in non-touristy areas, but is definitely commmon in cities and touristy areas. As an American, when I first visited the UK, one of the biggest differences that I noticed was the very small amount of water that is in the bowl of typical UK toilet, versus the large amount of water that we have in a typical US toilet. A larger amount of water helps to keep the toilet bowl cleaner, as well as cutting down on foul odors during #2, since things that are underwater don’t smell as much.

I think you were had a moment of culture shock. I had a fair few in the states. As far as cleaning goes a full bowl of water is not helpful for cleaning. I use a brush each day to take down the water level even further (and that's European levels, not USA), then I use some vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, quick brush and leave for half an hour and then flush. How on earth do you cope with all that water? It is the power of the flush that clears the bowl not the amount of a water. A small trickle will do nothing even if you use copious amounts. Did you find the lavatories to be extremely stinky compared to the USA?
@oaktree1628
@oaktree1628 2 ай бұрын
@@lorrainemoynehan6791 extra water most certainly helps keep the bowl cleaner by preventing anything crusty and hard from forming on the bowl. Of course we also need to use a toilet brush every week with a little bit of Ajax or Clorox bleach powder to thoroughly clean it, but it doesn’t require any extra hard scrubbing, since there is nothing that has formed into a hard crust. It takes very little effort to scrub the bowl, and then flush a few times for a thorough rinsing.

Good grief the number of the floor is rarely the accurate number because many hotels have a ground floor which is like 0 or they have a Lobby floor and some have a ground floor and the next level up is the Lobby or it can be on the 3rd or even 4th floor where the main check in desk is located and it's almost always referred to as the Lobby sometimes it replaces the number of the floor sometimes it doesn't.

Do you want your staff constantly having to spend as much time wiping down an elevator as it takes to clean a room? No? Hence no mirrors in elevators unless there is so much staff (casino) it doesn't matter. Not only that, most of the places in the US that used to would have had the mirror elevators, now just have clear ones. I've never in all my life ever seen a kettle at a motel or hotel, nor have I ever needed or wanted one. Not only that, I've never ever heard anyone even mention it before. It would be much more unusual to actually have one in the room than to not. Having one in every room would be an unnecessary item that would cost the hotel/motel a lot of money and thus raise prices across the board.

* I don't know of any elevators (lifts) in the US that have mirrors. But what a great idea that is, I wish we had them here. It would give the tight confines of an elevator a sense of space and be more wide open (as mirrors do in some houses). Some people can not enter an elevator because of claustrophobia but mirrors would alleviate some of that problem. * One of the reasons you didn't have a kettle is because hotels/motels see them as fire hazards. Just like you can not have a hot plate in a hotel. It is also probably related to insurance coverage.

Hotels may ask for a security deposit up front if you are paying in cash. If you leave your credit card number, they can put a "hold" on the card for the room rate plus a little more to cover room charges and damages. Holds don't show up on your statement, so you may never realize that they happen.

In addition to having ice for drinks, people also fill the insulated containers they’re going to take on the road with the ice to keep drinks and snacks cold. I think security deposits at check-in usually depend on where you're staying, like if it is a big city or very touristy area. New York and Chicago hotels each held a lot (around $100) as a pending charge until I checked out, but one hotel in New Hampshire only took $1 as pending just to have a card on file. The only really annoying thing about that is a lot of hotels aren't completely up front about that incidentals charge, so unless you do your research before checking in, that's less money you expected to have on the trip until it drops off.

Depends on the hotel / Motel.... Days Inn, Super 8 and other 3 star and lower hotels DO charge security deposits. The higher end hotels tend to have your credit card on file, and they put a hold on the card for up to a certain amount that is released after the room is cleaned and no damage or extra cleaning is needed to be covered. Ice machines yes. Mirrors no. Security deposit? Unless you mean at pre registration/reservation? Than yes but it is not billed if you stay your bill is adjusted as a room stay on your tab. This insures the room being put aside for you will be paid for instead of going to waste. It also lets you have that reservation held in case you won't arrive until late. Some have coffee makers. For coffee and tea but I think less do so now since covid. It's nice to get places that have the breakfast offering to choose from. The cupcakes are muffins. Offering breakfast a feature I like which is convenient before getting back on the road to explore.

We like our ice here in America because it helps to keep us from melting in the summertime.😄 For the same reason, we don't have "kettles" in our hotel rooms. Unless you're visiting in the winter, most people here in The States don't really drink a lot of hot drinks aside from coffee. If we want tea, we typically drink it cold (unless, of course, you're somewhere cold, and you want something to warm you up). Unfortunately, some hotel guests have been known to be rowdy and cause damage to hotel rooms here in the U.S. To help pay for the damage, hotels will charge a security deposit up front, but usually it is refunded to your account within a few days of checking out if you left your room in decent shape. Please note that not all hotels in America do this. This is only done in hotels that have higher rates of vandalism/theft.
