This song was originally released in 1967 became a hit. Rereleased in 1972 and became a smash. This was all done before the artificial processing forced upon today's music. These guys had talent and mahy hits.

Yes, you have just listened to a masterpiece. The five original members of the band are some of the most versatile musicians you will ever hear. Between them they could play 35 different instruments. This is why they require a full orchestra as their backup.

This track is from their second album, for which their record label (Decca) had requested them to collaborate with the London Festival Orchestra to showcase Decca's new "Deramic Sound System" stereo recording setup. The orchestrations are arranged by Peter Knight and are an integral part of this song and the whole album. Considering the background, the album could have turned out to be a boring sound showcase but instead they recorded a really quite excellent record.

The Moody Blues were together for years they had a huge hit with a song called Go Now, check it out. Nights in White Satin is from the album Days if Future Past. It follows a day made up of The Day Begins, Dawn is a feeling, the morning another morning, lunch break, peak hour, the afternoon, Forever afternoon, Tuesday afternoon, Evening, time to get away, Evening, the sunset, twilight time, the night, nights in white satin, late lament, so that’s all xx x it was hugely popular x

Originally recorded in 1968. This the band was from more recently with an orchestra. The original album was one of the earliest albums of the progressive rock genre and had the band's music interspersed with orchestral music to tell the day in a life. This was the "night" of that day.

Great choice for a reaction video! The Moody Blues were a 5 man group (Justin Hayward - Guitar, John Lodge - Bass, Mike Pinder - Keyboards, Ray Thomas - Flute, and Graeme Edge - Drums) that wrote and played their own songs. They blended awesome melodies, introspective lyrics, and unique instrumentation to make incredible concept albums in the 60's, 70's and 80's. They had many hits over the three decades including Nights in White Satin, Question, Story in Your Eyes, I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band, The Voice and Your Wildest Dreams. Thanks for a fun reaction!

There was a spoken word bit at the end that i always found haunting: Breathe deep the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade from every room. Bedsitter people look back and lament, Another day's useless energy spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one. Lonely man cries for love and has none. New mother picks up and suckles her son. Senior citizens wish they were young. Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight. Red is grey and yellow white, But we decide which is right And which is an illusion.

There has never been a voice like Justin Hayward before or since!! The Moody Blues are one of my favorite bands of all time.....I have their complete musical history. Got the chance to go to Reno Nevada in 2009 to see them live......it was an experience I will never forget!! Justin sounded just as good then as he did in his highlight years. You MUST hear this with the Late Lament which follows.... Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy is spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love and has none New mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colors from our sight Red is grey and yellow-white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion The Moody Blues were poetic/musical geniuses! Right up there with The Bee Gees!! Band members, Jan Lodge on bass, Ray Thomas on flute, Graeme Edge on drums and of course Justin Hayward lead vocals and guitar. The flautist was indeed part of the band.....they used flute in many of their songs. They were really revolutionaries with the use of full orchestra behind their rock and roll....they introduced that concept to the rest of the music industry. I was really surprised you had not heard of them or their music as they are British! Again, I LOVE them, you really need to check out the rest of their songs.....there's not a bad one anywhere! Oh and fun fact, each of their main albums produced all had a spoken poem in them! The Late Lament was not their only recorded spoken poem, only their most famous as it was attached to Nights in White Satin.

My wife and I have seen them live 13+ times over the years, they always sold out every venue and in this video, they were at the Royal Albert Hall in London in this video. The Moodies as their fans call them are studio perfection on stage but with the freshness of a live concert. You will discover the Moody Blues have a hundred beautiful songs and not just with orchestras. They have a myriad of Rock songs and here are a few you should listen to Tuesday Afternoon, Ride My See-Saw, The Voice, Your Wildest Dreams, Gemini Dreams, No More Lies, Candle of Life, Gypsy, For My Lady, Isn't Life Strange and a hundred others! Not sure if you are aware but due to channels/videos like yours many young people are discovering the moody Blues again. Their album sales are at 100 million so that tells you a lot right there. This song always reminds me of my first girlfriend & the first time I fell in love when I was 17. I'm 62 now but the memories are still recalled by this beautiful song. The original didn't have an orchestra but they used a new keyboard instrument at the time called a "Mellotron" to produce the string sounds. Fun fact:- The mellotron used loops of tape each with one note from a violin recorded onto them. Each key activated an individual tape player to produce that note. Sounded amazing but seriously high maintenance as the tapes would wear out or snap & the tape heads needed constant cleaning. They also weighed a lot....A roadies nightmare.

Nice reaction guys. As most people have said the song is from 1967, it came from a groundbreaking album called Days of Future Passed, it was my favourite album of the time and still is, 58 years later. There isn’t a bad song on the entire album. It is fully orchestrated throughout, hence the orchestra. At the time their keyboard player, Mike Pinder ( died last year unfortunately) had an instrument called a mellotron which had the haunting sounds of an orchestra and was used extensively in their albums. I could go on as there is so much to say about them but I won’t, you have many more songs of their’s to discover.

Incredibly the album from which this piece is taken, _Days of Future Past_, was conceived as a promotional tool by London/Decca Records to demo stereophonic equipment in stores. The blend of a rock group and a symphony orchestra highlighted the high fidelity quality of the latest stereo recording and playback equipment in 1967. The concept album's song cycle encompasses an entire day, from dawn until night, with poetic interludes written and spoken by the group's drummer Graeme Edge. Both "Nights in White Satin" and "Tuesday (Forever?) Afternoon" became big hits and the band went on to record a string of successful albums.

On The Moody Blue's album "Days of Future Passed" this song actually ends in a soliloquy that is usually left out of Live Performances and the Radio Edit of this song. Even though it is just in the form of the spoken word, I think that it adds so much to the overall feeling of the song, and people who only listen to the shorter versions miss out on so much. The ending goes like this: Breathe deep the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade from every room, Bedsitter people look back and lament, Another day's useless energy spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one, Lonely man cries for love and has none, New mother picks up and settles her son, Senior citizens wish they were young. Cold-hearted orb that rules the night, Removes the colors from our sight, Red is grey, and yellow, white, But we decide which is right. And which is an illusion.

You do know that there are a lot of music, bands, singers and performers will blow your mind. And take your time to explore. Music is the one thing that have a true emotional impact, no matter the age of it. It will be ingrained into your memories. The real reason why I'll say this is because everything other sense will give a different feel after 20/30/40 years, but songs are imprinted and will be till forever. Keep this up, But go not to fast, take your time to stay close to your own feelings.

Saw them perform with an orchestra in a minor league ballpark . The full version has a poem that starts with Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bed sitter people look back and lament Another days useless energy spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love and has none New mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colors from our sight Red is gray and yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion

This was awesome... I would recommend you both to have your own headphones, because older music was mixed in analog... so you will only hear half of the sound mix... parts of it may be in the right and others in the left... also both ears at the same time.. I just don't want you to miss out on the true quality of older music 🎶

You each need headphones to really appreciate the music. The flute player, Ray Thomas (RIP), was one of the original founders of the band and was a multi instrumentalist, composer and vocalist. Justin Hayward (guitarist, multi instrumentalist, vocalist, composer) joined in about 1966, as did John Lodge (world top rated bass player, multi instrumentalist, vocalist, composer). John and Justin are the two surviving members and still tour separately. The band was formed in the early 1960's and were active until 2018. Justin wrote this song at age 19.

T0 add to this... The drummer, Graeme Edge (RIP. percussionist, poet), was the first to work towards developing electric drums. Former members include Mike Pindar, an original founder, multi instrumentalist, composer, vocalist, who introduced the Mellotron into the sound, adding orchestral elements which became part of their sound. He also introduced the Mellotron to the Beatles. He left in the late 1970"s. RIP 2024. Denny Laine, (RIP) former lead vocalist, left the group in approximately 1966 and went on the co-found Wings with Paul McCartney. He was the lead vocalist on their first hit "Go Now".

The album this is from, "Days of Future Passed", which is one of the first "concept albums" by a rock group. It starts with dawn, the morning, and lunch eventually leading to the the other hit from the album "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday Afternoon)" and eventually to "Nights in White Satin". The use of the full "London Festival Orchestra" was also groundbreaking.

In 1967, DERAM (UK) desired to create one of the first Stereo LP Records. It was recorded and arranged to highlight the fill depth (and channel separation) possible with stereo recording. Many audio shops used a “test record” in store to highlight new stereo equipment. The song “Nights in White Satin” was written by Justin Hayward (lead singer, guitar) when he was 21. In the USA, it was re-released as FM Radio stations gained popularity and desiring longer stereo source music. Sadly, original members are passing, Ray Thomas (flute) a couple years ago.

OK, I read all the comments so that I wouldn't repeat anything already posted. This sounded almost note for note the same as the original album did when it was first released. They were proud of being able to reproduce their sound in a live show exactly as they played it in recording studios. They formed in the early-to-mid 1960s, to the best of my recollection. Forgive me, I'm 67 myself, and I was in college in the '70s, so I don't trust my memory as much as I wish I was able to, LOL! --Dan

This was my mother’s favorite song. I gave the Days of Future Passed cd to my 22 year old nephew back in 2017 and this was his favorite song too. Now when I hear it, I think of them both together again in that eternal sky meeting Graeme Edge (the drummer) and Ray Thomas (flute player) and all singing this song. RIP to them!

Days of Future Passed, a concept album, so all is connected. Tuesday Afternoon is the other song from this album that got air time. It was meant to be listened to in a whole piece. We did. Occasionally, even an " album" station would play it in it's entirety, as it was meant to be played.

In that recording the guys were in their 60s. The Moody Blues introduced it in 1967. Theres an early version by the Moody Blues that incuded a poem written by one of the band members and recited by the actor Richard Harris (the first Dumbledore) as part of the song. Google "moody blues, nights in white satin, late lament". Check it out. It will add icing to this really great song. Trust me on this one.

I believe Graeme Edge, their drummer, recited Late Lament and most of their spoken-word stuff. They have had guests perform it - when we saw them on the 50th Anniversary of Days of Future Passed tour, they had a recording of Jeremy Irons reciting that poem.

The original band sounded very different. When this singer, Justin Hayward, joined their sound evolved from the typical blues-rock of the mid 60s to a more ethereal, symphonic feel. The flutist and drummer were the remaining members of the *original* lineup, who had a hit with "Go Now" several years before this was released. Amazing to hear it live with an orchestra onstage, which must have been an *enormous* task to get the sound right, balancing rock instruments and the orchestra. The original 1967 recording had an orchestra, as did many pop bands of the era, but the band did not perform live with an orchestra until decades later, having emulated orchestral sounds with a keyboard that played tape loops called a mellotron, use of which their keyboard player then was a pioneer. The mellotron was also used to get very eerie background sounds that are like otherworldly wailing on the original recording.

In 1967 this song really stood out from the pop music and shouting rock of the time. The whole album was a huge success and they followed it with hit albums every year or two for a very long time, the after a short time off, came back with more hits in the 80's. They still sounded great when I saw them around 2000. Unfortunately, we have lost a couple of them but Justin's voice is still brilliant. Ray Thomas was the flutist and did a lot of the writing and arranging. He was a founding member.
