Her smile after speaking on her children's death is absolutely terrifying. I am medium size guy and (I like to think pretty strong) but none of that matters when someone like her who knows no moral or lawful boundaries. She could easily be so very dangerous ,you could simply walk by and boom a claw hammer to back of your head...if you could still hear & see it would be..( blood I can't believe all the blood).

The 2 survivors - 3 Yr old son paralysed for life, the older daughter unable to talk for months (mute from trauma), because she knew it was her mother who shot them. That kid ended up testifying against her mother - the courage that took. Just looking at the evil spewing from this woman's aura..is in itself terrifying .

Yes. Evil. She was under my supervision. The look in her eyes, the smirk on her face. These men nailed her personality. As in these short videos, you can see where she'll make a comment that's utterly disgusting and inhumane, then right after her comment, she presents a slight smile. I would rarely give her the time of day unless I absolutely had to, and during those times, every time, she would make a comment, usually a strange one, only to see the reaction on your face. And, as these men stated, she lives for attention, especially from men. Being a male staff member, I had to be extremely cautious, but unfortunately, there were male staff members who enjoyed the attention she would give them. I actually had to put one of those staff members 'in check'.

yeah i don';t remember which victim it was either the son or daughter but when they were recovering in critical condition Diane would walk into the room and their pulse would beep like crazy on the monitor only when she entered the room and they had bulging fear filled eyes when they'd see their mom. Also the "i'm bored and want to demonstrate power by getting knocked up as i am accused of killing my kids" baby, a girl, ended up finding out who her biological mother was, Diane motha freaking Downs and she tried to have a relationship with this devil woman and they wrote letters to each other and i think they mnet at the prison but don't quote me. The daughter said her eyes scared her, even in the photos (diane has some seriously freaky zombie eyes) and anyway she regretted trying to give her a chance and said she is a sick woman who is obviously guilty saying diane accused her of all this crazy crap and basically how diane is a total sociopath who manipulates and uses everyone and is very paranoid...

@@melissasw64 hi. Not violent, and I know that seems unbelievable, eerily creepy, yes. Devious, yet flirtatious with and seeked attention from male staff. I wrote somewhere else in my comments, or they may have been replies to someone on this channel about her, about how I became 'acquainted' with her. It was due to an interaction she initiated with me. At that time, I didn't know who she was, her interaction was very inappropriate, and to put it mildly, I instantly had to put her in check. After the incident, staff and other inmates asked me if I knew who she was. My reply was I didn't care who she was, she was inappropriate, and that was not something I was going to tolerate. Needless to say, I was shocked when I found out who she was.

Sometimes I experience things this way, esp. when I'm dissociated. "The ball kep hitting the wall".Yeah, I know the neighbors toddler must be kicking the ball, but I can't see that, only hear the ball. So maybe DD was dissociated, either when she was stabbing her children or while speaking to the interviewer. Doens't change the truth, she was the one stabbing them with the knife, but might be an additional reason for the wording besides distancing.

There's something that I wish could've been included. That was when Diane and Ann Rule were interviewed by Oprah. Diane tried to minimize Danny's paralysis by saying that it's not as bad as you'd think. She even said, at first, that he wasn't paralyzed. An innocent person would focus on how bad it is that he doesn't have full use of his legs. A guilty person would try to minimize the damage they've caused by explaining that it's not really that bad.

The first time I saw this creepy smile it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. If there is ever a time a mother should NOT be smiling, it is when she is discussing the death of her child. I had a younger brother who died when he was only three days old. My mother and I were discussing him on the day he would have turned 21 (in 1970) and she said that she was sort of thankful that he died as a baby because if he had lived he would have been the right age to have been drafted and he might have died in Vietnam but he had at least been spared the horror of going to war; however even as she was saying this she was crying and this was two decades after his death. Diane is scary and for the well-being of all of us, I hope she is NEVER paroled.

I’m watch right now and Scott’s remark about having the reaction to someone “that’s not right” is spot on. When I was in the Navy, my ship was in a shipyard. Most of the crew was berthed in a seaman’s hotel but since I was close to my home, I opted to take the long commute home every day. One day I was waiting for the bus, and thought I’d take the opportunity to use the hotel’s toilet. I walk thru the bar area, and went thru the swinging shutters the were outside the toilet area. In opening the doors, I hit a guy coming out with one of the doors. I immediately apologized but this guy looked like he would kill me… my reaction was “that’s not right.” Sure enough it wasn’t. The guy I’d bumped into was the mass murderer Richard Speck, who had just finished murdering eight student nurses.

I feel like something that is often overlooked is that even when psychopaths or narcissists are extremely intelligent, their lack of introspection still leads them to have really dumb beliefs. Not because they're stupid, but because they're so confident in themselves that the idea their reasoning was wrong never crosses their minds. It doesn't really matter how intelligent you are if you can't self reflect, you'll eventually make an error in reasoning. Never re-examining the held belief whilst building more from it.

I was once interviewed by police about a mother who had just killed her two small children to punish her partner. She went to a police station and told them that her children were in the boot of her car. I had been a funeral director some years before when her fist baby died, a cot death they believed. Her behaviour had been very aggressive and strange, but not having your expertise I just explained to the police that everyone acts differently so I couldn't make any definite statement. There were anomalies, but I didn't have any knowledge. I still worry.

What Mark said about “checking for exits” really resonated with me. I was a kid working in a restaurant/bar and was called in the middle of another’s shift because she had gotten sick. The way it was set up, each shift’s tasks were divided and specifically assigned. The person who had gotten sick had the assignment of resupplying bar items and assisting the person who had to count the night’s take and sign off on it for the deposit bag. (I’ll call her “Judy). Judy was a bit older and the Head Hen. She had everyone under her control. So we were off the main floor in a small supply room with one door with all that shift’s money. I was doing my assigned resupplying/inventory tasks and Judy said, “Here… you do the deposit”. It involved a LOT of cash. I said, “I’m not going to sign off on a deposit when I wasn’t here for 3/4 of the shift and have not had any control over the money!” Now Judy was between me and the only exit. She gave me a look I’ll never forget…the hairs on my neck and arms raised and it immediately triggered the “fight or flight” response in me! In a flash, I knew I was in danger, she was between me and the only exit and my adrenaline soaked brain developed a very reasonable and logical “plan B”. My backup was to grab a liquor bottle, break it and use it as a weapon…just like the old cowboy movies! That’s how threatened I felt! I’m still, to this day, amazed how I analyzed the situation and developed plan B so fast. As it turned out, she just flounced out with the deposit (that she had to sign) and it was over as quickly as it started. After that, she knew I knew and I knew she knew I knew….she gave me a wide berth from then on. I could make this a lot longer by enumerating her psychopathic behavior in the ensuing years, but I think all the panelists can imagine her future. Always trust your gut!

@@MayimHastings …….. well…. OK. The community is small enough and everyone pretty much knew each other so that I’ve been able to watch her life unfold over the years without direct contact. >Got pregnant by a very rich man on purpose, he wouldn’t marry her…. they kid now hates her and went “No Contact” and moved in with his father the instant her was old enough…she pulled a gun on her own kid when she realized he would escape her control. >Would “run through” friends….always has a “bestie”, but after about 2 years, that person goes totally NC and she moves on to the next one. I never let an adult, who is old enough to have a history, near my life if he/she doesn’t have long term friends. > Totally estranged from family over a will. I don’t know the details, but if money was involved, it wouldn’t be hard to fill in the blanks. > Attends the funerals and try’s to vamp the widowers AT THE FUNERAL! > Now that she’s getting somewhat long in the tooth and getting men is not as easy, she’ll try to insinuate herself into others’ lives by doing “good deeds”. At this point, many are onto her and decline her offers. >She was very pretty and could really turn on the charm. I’ve see her body posture and even her voice change, Jekyll and Hyde style, when she had prey in her sights. It was creepy. I was always bewildered why those ..both women and men…..who knew the exact same information I did … but would somehow involuntarily fall under her spell. Everyone knew she was a predator, yet when in a group, she was always the belle of the ball. Everyone would be turned, facing her exactly like bees face the hive’s queen….almost like they were paying homage! And if she deigned to bestow extra attention on one of her bedazzled courtiers, he or she would be thrilled and so proud! It was very interesting and VERY weird because everyone knew her history. I was grateful that I somehow was immune to her powers. Psychopaths really do have some kind of social/psychic/mental power that draws in the prey like some kind of evil pheromone ….even if people know the danger, that knowledge does not negate the psychopath’s power. I was around her only at work or events with other people and I did this one thing that drove her crazy. I’d refuse to pay homage to her queen bee status and would always turn my back to her. I’d be the only one not lined up like a compass needle to true north. But I always had an excuse because we’d be at work or some event with a lot of activity, so when I turned my back, it always had a very logical excuse….busy working, talking to someone else, taking an order, brewing more coffee, gotta go to the ladies room, etc, etc… just busy at work, nothing socially rude… It was just that my focus was always on something or someone else. It was so funny. I never initiated an exchange with her that was not work specific and never at all socially….She’d approach me and try to engage in conversation, I’d smile and say a couple of bare minimum, polite sentences, then have to break it off because ..busy, busy…I was needed to be somewhere or to do something. Never rude, just busy, busy, busy with no time for social conversation. It really is an acid test. If you suspect someone is a Narc or psychopath, just never face them….nothing rude….just don’t pay homage or make them your focus…. the mask will slip and fall to the floor with a resounding thud! This technique can protect you from many bad apples. The predator will react one of two ways…. either with frustration and overt ire, or with fake praises and admiration. If someone is intensely charming, it’s almost always a red flag….. stand back, don’t follow the pack, and have your defenses up!

Several years ago I read Ann Rule's book about Diane Downs, titled Small Sacrifices. An interesting detail I remember is that she had an obsession with the Duran Duran song "Hungry Like the Wolf" around the time she shot her kids. Apparently it made her think of her married ex-lover, the one who she thought would want her, sans-children. She listened to it repeatedly, including DURING the shooting. If I remember correctly, one of her surviving children showed noticeable terror in hearing the song again, and I believe it was helpful in convicting her. Another thing-- For such a completely self-absorbed woman, that's an awfully noticeable MUSTACHE! 😱

Something stuck out so hard to me and I couldn't figure out why, so I went back and watched the videos again. I'm just a panelist, not an expert, so I wanted to see what you guys think about something. When she said "snapped back" I immediately, for some unknown reason, thought of the recoil of a gun. When I went back and re-watched the videos, she says, "... shot my daughter, my first reaction was to snap back..." At that point her head recoils and leans back and her eyes roll back. When it's been a long time since I've fired a gun, or when I fire a gun I've never shot before, that recoil will get me. It always freaks me out for a few seconds at first. The second time she says it, "... the gun hit the tips of my fingers and that snapped me (literal finger snap) and I went, 'wait a minute'..." Is it possible there is a fragment of truth in there and that this phrase is her real reaction to firing the gun? I'd love to know what you guys think about that. Also, at the end... Wow. That seemed like a confession straight out of the gate. "Absolutely." Then more about how smart she is. This woman is so detached. Great one, guys! Thank you!

I don't reallly get your ? We know she is guilty, so, you're asking, if this is an indicator for Truthtelling, physical movements that are literal demonstrations of the words being used??? Idk, I'd guess not an indicator of Truthfullness, but just yesterday, I came across about 4 unintentional puns. One was so obscure, I immediately thought, there is something else at play. A phrase you never use, would never have thought to use this time, and it just comes out of your mouth, and fits like the speaker has the wit of Shakespeare and George Carlin combined. Wish I could remember it:p ...But, my point is, yes there is a very meaningful association going on there, but I don't think it's Truth telegraphing, cz she is saying she shot them, so that's already out there. But I find the fact she used 'snapped back' to describe the moment after the shooting absolutely fascinating. Surely unintentional. And, I'd not caught it, so tx. I satrted thinking, well, you could use it in interrogation when you don't know if the person has shot someone, but, again, they would have to be telling you about a shot they took for it to apply. When Mark says she doesn't know what it feels like to the rest of society, the horror of this loss off her children in such a violent manner a light bulb moment for me. It's not only that they don't have conscious, they (psychopaths) don't actually feel what they've studied in movies or shows so they cannot connect to it and portray it convincingly. This is why when she speaks to the reporter telling her practiced tail she sees the emotion come over the reporter and is chuffed that she has fooled her and acted it out successfully...and the chilling smile presents itself.

I agree with you. When she describes the condition of her daughter, then the pause, then the smile. I think that she’s feeling really pleased with herself for telling a story that can elicit the response from the interviewer. At that moment, she has completely forgotten about her daughter, and is solely focused on herself. She’s probably thinking to herself, “Wow, I tell a really good story”. The most worrying thing is that she is able to describe her daughter in the last moments of her life, then completely forget about her a split second later.

Thank you for the challenge! Side note: I have been watching TBP a lot because my mom is a narcissist and so, as a child, I learned to be expressionless to avoid getting in trouble and I never understood my mom's expressions (except the angry one). As an adult, I ignored it when people's behavior didn't match their statements because that was normal to me. I've learned so much from you. Thank you for taking the time to explain what you know. It has already made a difference in my life. This is what I see in this clip: No sadness, guilt, or regret that her child is dead and her other children are gone. No hand gestures. (She's thinking a lot.) Maintains “innocence,” instead of saying “I didn’t kill my children.” Who laughs when a stranger says, “I want your car?” That's when all women get afraid. Smiles when says that she replied to the stranger, “You gotta be kidding!” as if she got one up on him. She says she didn't make it up because these things don't happen. They happen all the time, which is why she chose this story. He jumped into the car and leaned into the car. She is inconsistent because it didn’t happen; it would be crystal clear in her mind if it did happen. “It was over” is what she says after her description of the shooting but, logically, it wouldn’t have been “over.” A mom’s nightmare had just begun. But a shooter might think it was over, especially a psychotic killer. The stranger shot in the car and she did nothing to stop him. This makes no sense at all. “Ugh! It was over!...” She’s frustrated that she has to keep telling this story. Why would the stranger “say” something about the car again? (He’s going to steal it after he shot the kids and not the driver?) No one would use that type of coercion to get a car; it’s illogical and not the easiest way to steal a car. What does she mean “struggled with him?” (She didn’t grab, attack, or bite him. She did nothing.) “He fell back. I jumped in the car” is scripted and makes no sense. Besides, when did she exit the car? “Christie and Danny were still crying” (at the hospital). No one would say that about their terrified children plus she says it without emotion. “The nurses reported that they were still crying.” Nurses wouldn’t even think to share this. Naturally, the children are crying. Why doesn’t she ask the nurses if they are okay? (I think she was still annoyed at them crying in the car.) Shakes her head in disagreement “the state says…” This is the only time there’s any truth from her. (She disagrees with the police.) Interesting that she describes the police making up stories when she is the one doing that. She defends herself: “if so, I wouldn’t take them to the hospital,” and yet includes “still crying.” (I think she was shocked by the blood and didn’t know what to do next so she went to the hospital to get the kids off her hands... and to get them to stop crying.) She defends herself poorly: “There are other ways to accomplish such a horrific deed.” Basically, she says she would have done it better. No mother in a situation like this would ever even think that, unless they are psychotic. “I’m not dumb” is her concern. She’s worried about what others think about her. This is more important to her than getting her story the same every time.

We have to remember that during these interviews (and there were many), her children were still in the hospital with a stroke and paralyzed and one was freshly buried. I can tell you as a mom, and hell, just a human being, I would be a mess. An incoherent mess of sobs, anger, grief, and tears, not whatever the hell she was. It is horrifying to watch her smile when she retells the blood coming from Christie's mouth. She does it in several interviews and always at that point. And when she smiles, her eyes roll with the squint that look just like a shark when they are about to bite into prey. She is a broken human being. Anne Jaeger (the interviewer) said that the hair on the back of her neck stood up when she realized that she was in the room with a woman that shot her three children. And Greg NAILED IT, she was flirting with that guy. BONUS CLIP: In every interview with retelling, she says this, "the door closed by itself". Every single one. It is literally her most consistent statement about the night her children were shot. She jumped into the car, took off and "the door closed by itself." What do I think about it? It is the proof positive in her mind that she had nothing to do with any of it in her sick and twisted way.

I contributed to Robert Hare's Psychopathy Checklist, due to my prior work with some infamous criminal cases, so was pleased to see Dr Hare and his book mentioned here. Though I rarely make internet comments, I'm making an exception because this is my favorite KZbin channel. I've also read books by all four of you gentlemen, which I highly recommend to your KZbin fans. "The Ellipsis Manual" in particular was interesting to me, due to my own background in Intelligence Operations. This channel is an extension of your books, which only adds to its usefulness when used in combination. I'd be interested in the panel reviewing Casey Anthony and OJ Simpson's behavior, if you find the time and/or inclination, because I'm very curious if I'm reading their behavior as you would. Since you covered Belle Gibson previously, I would also be interested in the panel covering Munchausen by Proxy cases such as Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Susan Schofield, and Garnett The Great's mother (sorry, her name escapes me at the moment). As for Ms. Downs, her behavior is particularly concerning for future offenses. She should never be released, in my humble opinion, because she will never not be a danger to society. As you correctly note, psychopaths are predators, and we are merely their prey. There is no effective treatment, as the condition appears to be biological rather than psychological. It is for that reason that we must learn to recognize them, just as we must recognize any other dangerous animal. Perhaps that sounds cold, but in my line of work, you have no choice but to accept that monsters are indeed real, but they're in human form. Thanks for presenting such an interesting, engaging, and educational channel. I wish you all the very best in your endeavors.

Have you ever heard of James Fallon? I wonder if prison (preferably a mental institution) focused on trying to teach them skills to manage their impulses if they wouldn't be so dangerous if released. Fallon was never violently dangerous. He did recognize his anti-social behaviors. He makes a conscious effort to be "pro-social". Could it be an effective method for psychopathic criminals? Have PET scans been done on kids suspected of being psychopathic or anti-social? If there is a way to reverse it a child would be the best chance. They have a lot of plasticity. Could it be possible to get the emotional, inhibition, conscious parts of the brain to light up later in life?

@@Cherokee51774 I'm afraid it would be an exercise in futility, since the current school of thought is that psychopathy is caused by a malformation of the amygdala. That said, I'm all for any type of research which could potentially result in treatment for the condition. I'm no expert on psychopathy like these gentlemen or Dr Hare, however. I'm just someone who spent decades in high level criminal defense in a very large city, so I came to know violent psychopaths along the way; as a result, I developed an interest in the subject. From that perspective, I'm just like everyone else who enjoys The Behavior Panel's channel. The only difference between you and I is that I've likely had more in-depth encounters with violent psychopaths, so I'm able to recognize it easier in real life. However, that also means that your opinion on a non-violent psychopath is just as valid as mine.

Back in the day, I watched that interview and where she smiled at 48:16 I thought it was the most chilling thing I had ever seen on the face of a mother after claiming someone shot her children. My response to that was, “Oh you did it. You know you did it, I know you did it, all of America knows you did it!”

I was in the kitchen finishing cooking supper when I heard Susan Smith supposedly pleading with whoever took her kids and I couldn't see her, but I heard her voice, which sounded like she was trying to get people to believe she was bereft about the kidnapping of her little boys. Our one kitchen wall doesn't go all the way up to the ceiling and I called over the wall to my husband and said, "She did it. She's killed her little boys!" I could hear the lies in her voice. She sounded like she was smiling, that there was no true grief in her voice. I knew she knew what had happened to her kids and where they were. I felt sickened.

Remarkable how the stranger also somehow knew that her 3 children (who, according to her, were all asleep) were even in the car, isn’t it? They weren’t visible in the dark and weren’t making any noise, yet this stranger knew exactly where to shoot.

So many years later, the most "emotional" she gets is still about being perceived as "dumb" by others. Could this be the one regret she has got? Her being "dumb" enough to take her injured children to the hospital? Not getting "the job done properly"?

Having Farrah Faucett play her in the movie was probably a big ego boost for her. I can't hear Hungry Like a Wolf without thinking of this case. Those poor children!

I think Farrah played her too sympathetically. But I still liked the movie. The best actress was the little girl who played Christie.

I would absolutely love to hear the panel’s take on Ted Bundy’s last interview, with Dr James Dobson. It’s nothing but more manipulative behavior and lies being spun by Bundy in my opinion but I would be fascinated to hear your opinions on him!!
