Now that I've finished watching Avatar: the Last Airbender the animated series, and with Legend of Korra coming to Netflix next week, now seemed as good a time as any to watch and react to the dreaded live action film of 2010 The Last Airbender directed by M. Night Shyamalan starring Nicola Peltz, Dev Patel, and Jackson Rathbone. I knew this would be a painful experience but didn't realize it would be this bad. I can say I did it, and never watch it again.

Fun fact about this movie: when i was a kid (and even now tbh) i didn't have any critical mind when it came to media, i could watch anything and not mind, okay i enjoyed some things more than others but even the most mediocre film i was at least mildly entertained by. After watching this movie i felt so wrong because i did not enjoy it, and i didn't really have a frame of reference for not liking media, so i was just confused why it made me feel so negative. After 2 weeks i finally understood that it was bad and i just straight up didn't like it. This movie literally taught me how to dislike movies

No. Bryke are not the reason for ATLA's success. They came up with the idea of the world, sure, and they understand the mythology, but what made us fall in love with the world is not the idea of it or the mythology. This movie is case and point that just making a world like the Avatar world will not generate emotion. What is gripping about the story is writer Aaron Ehasz's penchant for storytelling and character-building. We can the very same n "Dragon Prince". The reason that ATLA was successful was Ehasz. And, unfortunately, Ehasz is not involved in the Netflix Live-Action either.

@timothyackerman1215
@timothyackerman1215 4 жыл бұрын
The names are based on the "correct" pronunciations from the languages they are based on. Doesn't make it the correct Avatar pronunciations though, like telling someone they are saying their own name wrong because it is originally a Greek name and the Greeks would pronounce it like X and so should they. Likewise, all the bending styles are based on specific martial arts with water bending being based on Tai Chi, so it's like they just had them do Tai Chi in front of a camera. There were so many mistakes that all of us could go on and on about, but clearly someone had to think all these were a good idea.
@Lycanthromancer1
@Lycanthromancer1 4 жыл бұрын
Except they're not correct. I don't speak any Asian languages myself, but I've heard other people who do, and they said all the names actually are wrong. I agree. Merphy Napier hit the nail on this - the biggest problem with LOK is that you will compare it with ATLA and even if you dont want to you are forced since they keep refering to it. If you are being compared with the best its easy to look worse than you really are LoK is a good series (8-8.5 looks right to me) and is better than a lot of other shows, but ATLA has a 10/10. ps: personally Lok has too much meh characters to my liking, while ATLA biggest drive has its characters. So while Lok is amazing in the action department, but ATLA has a lot easier to connect with it duo to the characters being more likable

Eventhough I didn't agree with alot of what Merphy said, I did agree with her when she said compared to atla, Lok isn't incredible, but compared to some other shows these days, it's amazing. But I personally feel like Merphy was overcritical of the show. Some of the things she said was kind of ridiculous. Like for example when she gave the show a 2.5 out of 5 and then when she said that somethings that happened were obvious. For example when Korra Air bended when Amon was about to take Mako's bending. I didn't think that was obvious at all; infact , I didn't see it coming at all. I thought she was gonna go into the Avatar state. So you gotta take Merphy's analysis with a pinch of salt.

The trippy thing about this movie is that it came out literally a year after the film "Avatar" came out (2009), and cause I was younger then, I was so confused over the two movies that had titles that both began with: "Avatar." So when people are talking about "Last Airbender," but just say "Avatar," I think they're talking about the movie with the blue people. Edit: Ok, so this movie didn't have "Avatar" in it's title.

Korra is one of those shows I feel like I always have to go to bat for, because I genuinely love what it accomplishes but it's situation is kind of complicated in a lot of ways. It's very deliberately trying to be something different from the original and that can an extremely disorienting move, not just because of new characters or a new state of the world but because it intentionally isn't replicating the traditional heroic journey that ATLA executed pretty flawlessly. It can be easy to compare it to it's predecessor and feel like it's doing things worse because it isn't conforming to what we expect from the first series, or a lot of fantasy epics in general, without necessarily realizing what it's trying to build by stepping away from that format. There are plenty of valid reasons why that isn't everyone's jam, but I actually end up preferring LOK just a bit because of it. It gains some powerful depth not just from how they contrast each other but what those contrasts actually represent thematically and physically in the world. It's a /very/ different deal from the movie, which is just so... confusing on so many narrative and production levels that it's honestly hard to imagine how you're supposed to contextualize any of it into something that makes meaningful sense.

This movie is legit like watching an elementary school play attempt to do an Avatar adaptation. But because it's NOT, I can't even be like "awe, the kids were cute though" like no. It's just infuriating.
