Avatar: The Legend of Korra is finally out on Netflix!!! So, of course, I'm going to watch and react to it! In today's episode, I'll be watching Book 2! Book 2/ Season 2 was a wild ride. It centered around the upcoming Harmonic Convergence and the intermingling of the spirit world and the material world. Watching the origins of the first Avatar was definitely cool the see. And the fighting between Vaatu and Raava was exciting as well. It left me a little confused at times, but I definitely enjoyed it. But I think Book 1 was still better
When I was a kid, everyone I knew watched Avatar: The Last Airbender on Nickelodeon. For some reason, I never got into it. To this day, my close friends still talk about the show regularly. But now I've watched all of ATLA and am moving on to The Legend of Korra!
Watch my previous ATLA reaction videos here!

At 37:25 Stephanie said that this season felt like an “add on” and it was basically like that. The producers thought that LOK would be a short series with only one season But after Nick saw how successful it got Nick wanted more. So the Producers had to make a whole season in a short time span. That’s why season 2 is the weakest of the 4 But they had more time with season 3 and 4 and that’s why they are “better”

@Aman Smith-martin It certainly isn't. It's more for kids yes but it has way better world building, character growth and better spirits even if LoKs book 2 is called spirits. Hei Bai, Ko or the painted lady were drawn beautifully and had reasons to get angry or vanish. The spirits in LoK are just jelly monsters without any background/connection/character. The origin story is painted very beautiful but it contains a lot of unnecessary explanations and they completely fucked up the Yin Yang analogy.

@@asha-bi7by well that's why I used arguments for ATLA book 1 and against LoK book 2. There are reasons why a lot of people don't like it. ATLA has it's problems I acknowledge that but when it's good, it's amazing. LoK season 1 (except the ending) is a very good season, season 3 had its moments and some aspects of season 4 were fine too but it never reached ATLAs emotional highpoints imo.

@WolfWarrior623

I agree. I think it makes him feel more realistic. People change as they get older, parents make mistake. I don't think Aang intentionally meant to show favoritism to Tenzin at all, but honestly, even before LoK had came out, it's exactly what I'd expect if Aang were to have multiple children and not all of them were Airbenders. Aang valued his culture a lot, and being the only one with knowledge to pass it on, would focus on the Airbending child(ren) even if it meant inadvertently paying less attention to the others. He'd try his best, but he's still only human. Likewise, it's understandable that Bumi/Kya would have a bit of resentment. We don't know the whole story, and we may never willl, but perhaps maybe they "did" want to be involved at first, but didn't go on the more Airbending specific ones early on, so when there were more trips like Ember Island, Kyoshi Island, etc, they had just given up by that point. That's just my guess of course, but who knows.
@angeliparraguirre7329
@angeliparraguirre7329 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe it would make more sense to people if the non airbenders who make up the Air Acolytes were not a thing Avatar Aang established. In the comics and in the shows it is established that he struggled in keeping his people's legacy genuine and alive. He was in conflict with people who wanted to appropriate Air nomad life and with people who moved into the empty Air Temples. He eventually solves this by teaching them his traditions. Something he could have easily considered to do with his non airbender children. What would have also helped is to explain how Avatar Aang would have come to the conclusion to not spend time on his non airbender children. This isn't outlandish considering we could gather that when he finally got an airbender son, he'd want to teach all the airbending he knows, so someone could continue the tradition. It is out of character for someone as inclusive and empathetic as Avatar Aang, as we see from the shows and the comics, to choose to neglect his older children without more story and context.
@vindifference
@vindifference 4 жыл бұрын
@@angeliparraguirre7329 I think part of the issue is that you make it sound like an active choice, when it was probably just a case of circumstance and him literally not paying attention to everything in his life. I'd imagine he would have likely started his kids on the lighter ways of airbender culture early on, but the kids would need to have a general education and exposure to the water tribe as well; they won't devote all their time to Aang's teaching. Meanwhile, until Tenzin is born, Aang would have his tasks in the city and probably worldwide. And of course be stressed out thinking that he should really be producing an airbending heir, which could affect his enthusiasm for teaching as much of his culture to his other kids as he would to Tenzin. When Tenzin comes into the picture, we can assume that Aang's whole mood and motivation shifts and he goes overboard. I feel like it's more that he over-included Tenzin, rather than specifically excluded Kya and Bumi. One could question if Tenzin got a balanced education, or if Aang taught him absolutely everything. His childhood was probably filled with ceaseless training, meditation, and waking up at the crack of dawn to go breathe on top of a mountain, after which he might get a fun field trip. Does Tenzin know as much about the Water Tribe as his siblings do about the Air Nomads? I mean Kya knows that long boring story about the guy who never ate. And Katara; did she essentially become a single parent for the two while Aang just ran off with Tenzin and frequently abandoned all of them? Aang obviously would think he's doing a great thing. But the thing with Aang is....he's carefree, not malicious. He's not that grounded, despite him needing to have balance as the avatar. So even though fatherhood would demand than you sit your butt at home and divide your attention to everyone, if you're flying high on the birth of your new son, a person like Aang wouldn't wanna come down. And he's inherently been that way since book 1.

@@vindifference Not imagine, Aang really taught l lighter surface ways of air bending culture to his other kids. In season 2 or 3 maybe when Tenzin was telling some Airbending tale, Kya and Bumi said yeah we all have heard about all these tales from Dad before a number of times. Which means Aang spent time with his kids. The issue is Tenzin is the youngest. So ofcourse when Tenzin was born the other two kids were already pretty grown. Kya might've started focusing more on water bending and its culture more. Bumi was even more older being a non bender he must have started spending time with Sokka more. So what's Aang gonna do? Ofcourse devote more of his time to the only Airbending kid in the world. Some Aang worshippers just make ridiculous claims about how Aang's character was destroyed when it wasn't like bruh

The acolyte being like “Aang had other kids?!” seems to be a reoccurring thing with Tenzin imo. It highlights how Aang favored Tenzin (probably bc he’s an air bender) and how Aang wasn’t a “perfect human” like so many people who use the Aang vs Korra argument when deciding upon which show is “garbage”. I like it! It shows that even the best of our characters (like Aang) aren’t one dimensional; no one in real life is perfect either. It creates a new dynamic between Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi and you begin to see why maybe Tenzin is “sensitive.” Maybe he grew up slightly disliked or ridiculed by his siblings simply because he had his father’s favor at birth (sort of like Azula)

I like how book 2 mirrors it as a "privilege" (from Kya and Bumi's pov) but also as a burden from Tenzin's perspective. Tenzin has his identity defined by "he's the son of Avatar Aang" while we know both Kya and Bumi had opportunities to explore things more: ie, Bumi *chose* the military and Kya "went away to find herself" in her life. It's also highlighted by the fact that both Kya and Bumi don't have children, while the responsability of Aang's legacy lies on Tenzin having kids. Ultimately, it doesn't mean that Aang was less of a father with Bumi and Kya, it's more that Tenzin is the one that is "remembered" because he's been put at the front line ever since he's become an Airbender.

It took me forever to realize this but, Big Blue Korra in the finale, that is a pure manifestation of Korra's individual spirit, no Raava to help, no past Avatar knowledge, no other spirit, nothing, its just Korra's pure resilience and strength put head to head with Vaatu, such a cool demonstration of her individual power with no Avatar State to help or guide
@alexlannister950
@alexlannister950 4 жыл бұрын
The thing about Korra in the first half of the season, in my opinion, is that like: She defeat Amon , and can enter in Avatar state wherever she want but people still treat her as a child and she didn't help that by acting like one. And I think after defeat Amon her confidence grow a lot and why she was annoying, and Unalaq was there to tell her everything she wanted to hear. And after his betrayal I think she get so pissed and just throw that anger in anything and anyone. Also I still ALWAYS gets the chills and Cry in the Beginning episodes And about the connections I feel like it happen what it had to happen. I mean, that room of statue's, after Roku only has space for more one or two Avatars: Aang and Korra. That're theories about it like the air nomads predicted the end of the cycle in the harmonic convergence but Korra and the others save the cycle them There's hardcore Korra fans who didn't like this book as much as the others because shit is to over. Buuut they're in once in a 10.000 event so I think shit should looks crazy and overpowered
@MARYWTHER
@MARYWTHER 4 жыл бұрын
I also believe Tenzin and Tonraq (and sometimes Mako) trying to control Korra or dictate what she was supposed to do, didn't help at all. They all did it the wrong way: Tenzin and Tonraq both treated Korra as a child, or as she was when she was stuck in the South Pole doing what everyone wanted her to do (and what literally disconnected from society because she was kept in complete isolation from... any teenager, any not-master-or-member-of-the-white-lotus). As well-intended as they were, both Tenzin and Tonraq making this choice, hindered her independance and controlled her for years of her life. She had to break free from that. Yes she did it strongly and as a rebellious teen would do (and *she is* a teenager, as some people tend to forget). But it was important. Because why did Tenzin have to school her like a child about airbending or the Avatar State? Why couldn't he talk to her like an adult would to another adult he didn't think as "less mature" than him? Why did her father hide things from her? Why did he lie several times? Why did he keep telling her "it's none of your concerns" (about the civil war and all)? Why did they try to side-line Unalaq when he clearly was a superior spiritual master? (we know why, but couldn't they have told her instead of just coming forward as controlling?). These relationships went sour for a while in this book because of all parties involved, not just Korra.

@@MARYWTHER Yes and yes. And even Korra behavior like , yes she is childish and spoiled sometimes, I think is way more a consequence for her years growing in isolation, disconnected from the world and other people from her age and disconnected to herself (she only saw herself as The Avatar, she had to learn through the show how to be just a girl), than anything else

The fans back in the day were so salty about Aang and his failures with Kya and Bumi. Even to this day, people say “Aang would have never done that, Katara would have never allowed Aang to do that”. But they don’t take into context a lot of factors. There was a novel October 2015 called Legacy, and it’s a book of letters from Aang and Katara to Tenzin about how it was his job to be the next last airbender and train the new Avatar. Aang was the Avatar. He wasn’t a 9-5 dad with a pension, sick leave and vacation time. His job was sporadic and he built republic city with Zuko. He was involved in a lot of things, and when he had time with family, he spent a lot of time with Tenzin to train and become the next last airbender. His culture was important to pass down to Tenzin. And Katara knows what that’s like because she was the last southern water bender. Culture meant a lot to her, and she would’ve supported that with Tenzin learning from Aang. And Katara was very overly motherly, and she would’ve resorted back to her times of when she took care of the children before Aang in the iceberg. They didn’t have therapy back then ;) Aang wasn’t really set up to be a good parent either. Air nomad culture was you didn’t grow up with your parents. Only monks. and while he had Gyatso, he wasn’t a true father figure. He was a monk that passed on the nomad tradition. Bumi wasn’t a bender, so he couldn’t relate to both his parents. Probably related to Sokka a lot and joined the military, and Kya needed her own identity since Tenzin’s identity was already established when he was an airbender. The acolytes there didn’t even know Aang had other kids 😳 So you know Aang and Katara did the best they could. But how the kids ended up is pretty realistic, and I applaud the creators for bringing a sense of realism.

@thebluesmurfdude
@thebluesmurfdude 4 жыл бұрын
First off, Varrick is awesome. I love how wild and unpredictable he can be. Secondly, I have seen some people explaining the first two seasons somewhat, but wanted to give a complete breakdown from what I remember. I copied this from a different video I commented on a while back. Trying to follow up ATLA was always going to be a challenge, and I think the writers did some things differently that many of the fans did not like. In my personal opinion I love LOK just as much as ATLA, and Korra is in my number three spot on my favorite characters list in the Avatar World. That’s a hill I’m going to die on. First thing to point out is that LOK had some issues behind the scenes from the get go. All seemingly to do with Nickelodeon. It almost didn’t get off the ground because when Nickelodeon heard that the main protagonist was a girl, they wanted her switched to a boy. The writers DiMartino and Konietzko threatened to just walk away. After some early test footage, where kids said they thought Korra was cool, Nickelodeon backed down. Another issue that happened is that the show was only originally planned as a mini series. I believe this is because of the whole main protagonist being a girl, and Nickelodeon was skeptical that fans would want to watch. So I think another issue you have with LOK is that there is not as much time to tell the story you want. Being limited to 12-14 episodes instead of 20. And also not knowing that your show is going to be picked up for a second season, so not being able to tell a single story through four seasons, but instead being left with four seasons of twelve episodes each to introduce a bad guy and then tie it up. Also, Nickelodeon kept changing the air schedule of Korra. The first book was aired on Saturday mornings. The first half of book two was changed to air on Fridays at 7 pm. Then halfway through book three they took LOK off the air completely, and you could only watch it online (I believe it was on nick dot com or something). The second half of book four was brought back to t.v., but it was on a separate channel (nicktoons) at 9 pm on Friday’s. And if I’m remembering correctly, they bumped the last episode to 10 pm, instead of 9. No official answer, but fans have speculated it was due to some controversial content. (I can’t explain further without spoilers.) So, you can see that not having your network’s support will hinder your ability to tell the story you want to tell. I just wanted to point out that books one and two are the least liked by the fans, while books three and four are more liked, although still have a good chunk of people that weren’t satisfied. Personally, I loved all the books, and especially found book two fun and riveting, although I can recognize that I am in the minority there, as there are several problems. There are some powerful moments in all the books, but especially in the third and fourth books. And I find myself relating to Korra in book four. Love what they show, and how she deals with it! Obviously, that’s just my opinion. But I hope the top half of my explanation shows why LOK doesn’t feel as polished as ATLA.

I think the worst part about korra getting so much hate is how people blame her for losing the connections with the past avatars. but it wasn't her fault, she had no control. she was unfortunate enough to be the avatar alive during harmonic convergence. she easily would've had vaatu back in the tree of time if she hadn't gotten smacked in the back. not to mention she was always meant to be the last avatar in the cycle. in atla, book 1 episode 3 when the gaang goes to the southern air temple and enter the room with all the avatar statues, you can see there's only room for 2 more statues, aang and korra.
